Book Encyclopedia of Canadian Social Work

Download or read book Encyclopedia of Canadian Social Work written by Francis J. Turner and published by Wilfrid Laurier Univ. Press. This book was released on 2009-07-23 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: All of us, as Canadians, are touched throughout our lives by some aspect of social welfare, either as recipients, donors, or taxpayers. But despite the importance of the social network in our country, there has been no single source of information about this critical component of our society. Even professionals in the field of social work or social services have not had a comprehensive volume addressing the myriad features of this critical societal structure. The Encyclopedia of Canadian Social Work fills this need. Over five hundred topics important to Canadian social work are covered, written by a highly diverse group of social workers covering all aspects of the field and all areas of the country. Practitioners, policy makers, academics, social advocates, researchers, students, and administrators present a rich overview of the complexity and diversity of social work and social welfare as it exists in Canada. The principal finding from this project underscores the long-held perception that there is a Canadian model of social work that is unique and stands as a useful model to other countries. The Encyclopedia of Canadian Social Work will be an important source of information, both to Canadians and to interested groups around the world. The Encyclopedia of Canadian Social Work is available in e-book version by subscription or from university and college libraries through the following vendors: Canadian Electronic Library, Ebrary, MyiLibrary, and Netlibrary.

Book A Commitment to Place

Download or read book A Commitment to Place written by Robert Marshall Greenwood and published by . This book was released on 2011 with total page 59 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Innovation and creative capacity are at the very foundation of regional economic development. Competing in the international knowledge-based economy demands products, services and processes that are better--in quality and/or price--than those produced elsewhere. Businesses, entrepreneurs, and creative workers must be able to access information on better ways of doing things, and develop their own unique approaches, if a region is to maximize its development potential. This report draws from research in Newfoundland and Labrador (NL) that was part of a national project on the Social Foundations of Innovation in City Regions, led by David Wolfe at the University of Toronto. The national project highlighted how innovation, talent attraction and retention, and governance are linked in providing the foundations for economic competitiveness. All too often research on policy and practices for economic development focuses on the activities of individual firms, their markets, technology and access to capital, without acknowledging the social factors that create the conditions for economic success.

Download or read book Rural Revival written by Alex Stewart and published by Walter de Gruyter GmbH & Co KG. This book was released on 2024-08-19 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When most of their jobs disappear, how do communities survive? In the hard-hit area explored in this book - the Bonavista Peninsula, on the island of Newfoundland - many residents transitioned into "everyday" entrepreneurs such as restauranteurs. Rural Revival explains how these business owners developed a place rich in "entrepreneurial capital." The author draws on six years of ethnographic fieldwork in the area: observations from listening, watching and learning with people in their everyday settings. Camera work opened doors to people's ventures and their lives. The many photographs in this book bring you deeply into a sense of presence among the people and their natural settings. To interpret the findings from fieldwork, the author draws on rural sociology and economic anthropology. He shows how people transformed the value of once-neglected things in the "house economy" into assets for tourists, leaving the "market economy." He uses theories of "cross-sector partnerships" to show the ways in which regional development is tough to sustain.
