Book From the Diary of a Snail

Download or read book From the Diary of a Snail written by Günter Grass and published by Random House. This book was released on 2017-06-22 with total page 311 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Probably the most autobiographical of his novels, From the Diary of a Snail balances the agonising history of the persecuted Danzig Jews with an account of Grass's political campaigning with Willie Brandt. Underlying all is the snail, the central symbol that is both model and a parody of social progress, and a mysterious metaphor for political reform. From the winner of the Nobel Prize for Literature and author of The Tin Drum.

Book Progress in Littorinid and Muricid Biology

Download or read book Progress in Littorinid and Muricid Biology written by K. Johannesson and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Littoral gastropods of the families Littorinidae and Muricidae are well studied compared to most marine taxa, yet there remain many basic problems concerning their taxonomy, ecology and evolutionary biology. In other words, we know these snails well enough to realize just how little we really know about them. This awareness prompted the First European Meeting on Littorinid Biology held at the British Museum in London on 26th November 1986, and the discussion continued through the Second Meeting on Littorinid Biology, held at the Tjarno Marine Biological Laboratory, Sweden, from 4th to 8th July 1988. During the Tjiirno meeting, it was agreed to have a third meeting at Dale, Pembroke shire, U.K. in 1990. Twenty-two people attended the Tjarno meeting, and a further ten contributed as co-authors to the papers that were presented. These covered research in progress in a broad range of topics, and geo graphical areas. Unfortunately, Cesare Sacchi and Domenico Voltolina, as well as Elisabeth Boulding were not able to attend the meeting in person, but their contributions were ably presented by David Reid and Richard Palmer, respectively. We also regret that one of us, C.E., and several of our Russian colleagues, did not have the opportunity to come.

Book Progress in Clinical Parasitology

Download or read book Progress in Clinical Parasitology written by Tsieh Sun and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume, now the third in a series, presents a more hetero geneous content than previous issues. It covers two previously rare but now common opportunistic infections in the United States, a common parasitic disease in Japan, exciting but difficult problems in developing a malarial vaccine, a study exemplifying the role of T lymphocytes in parasitic infections, and a fascinating review of the relationship between the schistosomes and their molluscan hosts. The first chapter covers cryptosporidiosis, which has become a household name since the outbreak of the acquired immunodeficien cy syndrome (AIDS). However, infection is now recognized to occur widely in immunocompetent individuals, with clustering of infection among veterinary students, laboratory workers, children in day care centers, and family members. It can also be the cause of traveler's di arrhea and nosocomial infection. Indeed, Cryptosporidium has be come recognized as the leading protozoal cause of diarrhea world wide. This chapter provides a concise, yet comprehensive, review on aspects of epidemiology, microbiology, clinical features, diagnosis, and treatment of this important disease. Recent in vitro studies of Cryptosporidium, conducted in Dr. Flanigan's and other laboratories, are described. They complement the extensive clincial experience of Dr. Soave, who summarizes her many articles in this field. The second chapter describes another common opportunistic infec tion among AIDS patients, toxoplasmosis. This disease differs from cryptosporidiosis in that it was recognized as a common infection in immunocompetent individuals even before the AIDS outbreak.

Book A Slow Passion

    Book Details:
  • Author : Ruth Brooks
  • Publisher : Bloomsbury Publishing
  • Release : 2013-03-14
  • ISBN : 1408826593
  • Pages : 278 pages

Download or read book A Slow Passion written by Ruth Brooks and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2013-03-14 with total page 278 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When BBC Radio 4's Material World programme announced a search for the UK's top amateur scientist, little did anyone expect that the winning experiment would comprise one of our humblest garden pests. Ruth Brooks posed this question: Do snails have a homing instinct? The nation was gripped by the unexpected thesis and by Ruth's online diaries, which catalogued her trials and tribulations as she got to grips with these slimy little gastropods. A Slow Passion is Ruth's story, with anecdotes and misadventures galore. What starts out as a ruthless vendetta against the snails that are decimating her hostas becomes a journey of discovery into the whys and wherefores of snail life. When Ruth dumps a group of the worst offending snails in a far-off wood, she decides to paint their shells with nail varnish, just to see what happens. And guess what, they come back home. This is the beginning of an obsession that sees the grandmother-turned-scientist prowling about and pouncing on the snails in her garden, sneaking off on night-time missions to repatriate bucketloads of painted snails, reading up on the sex-life of snails (which turns out to be unexpectedly romantic) and, eventually, sending off the application to a national competition for home science. With charming illustrations, A Slow Passion is a sweet, funny and surprising investigation into the hidden life of snails, which will change the way you look at the smaller (and slower) things in life.
