Book excerpt: Experience encouragement in your daily struggles and find hope in this seemingly hopeless world as you read the inspirational thoughts of the Women of Grace Writers in this book, "Mountains of Grace." This is the work of a group of Christian writers in Southern Arizona, USA, who, along with contributing authors, share how their lives have been inspired and changed by the unfathomable mercy, grace, and love of God, which is extended to all people. The aim is to provide glimpses of how acceptance of this gift of grace has produced 'overcoming lives' for these writers, no matter their circumstances. Their brave transparency will hopefully energize you to also 'stay the course' in difficult times and to lift up others as you climb in your own spiritual walk. You will see that sometimes this grace is manifested in very mysterious, even supernatural, ways. So, it is the overwhelming desire of the Women of Grace Writers that God will use this book to open the eyes of their readers to the blessed hope they have found in the life, death, and resurrection of Jesus Christ - How amazing is that."

Book excerpt: Saint Charles is a small community in Bear Lake Valley. The town sits on the Idaho-Utah border just off Highway 89 and is the inspiration for our fantastical place called Windy Ridge. The story takes place in the fifties. An American family with Scottish roots built their homes in a mountain valley at the top of Jacob's Canyon Road. There are six houses: Mountain House, Grandma and Grandpa's cottage named Kings X by the kids, Castle Rock, River Rock Place, Glass Tower, and Lutz Lake House. There are six main characters who are close cousins: Chrystal, Alex, Reigny, Glitter, Windy, Snowy, and Ismond, commonly known as the Ridge Kids. Most of their adventures start or end on Windy Ridge. The mountain loves the family and provides for it. Summer has boating on the blue, blue water of Bear Lake; autumn brings the dancing scarecrow and fireworks; winter has skiing, snowshoeing, skating, and mystery; and spring brings reflection and redemption. Windy Ridge is the beloved home of their collective youth. They find love and security there as well as adventure and danger as they choose to travel forbidden roads.

Book excerpt: Autism has been identified as the fastest growing, serious developmental disability in the United States, where nearly 2 million people are affected. The work includes interviews with parents of children with autism and will be of wide interest to professionals, teachers, parents, and family members who can use the approach to help a child move into the social world. The book, and the theory it promulgates, will also interest students of psychology, special education, pediatrics, neurology, and speech. Autism has now reached epidemic proportions. It has been identified as the fastest growing, serious developmental disability in the United States, where nearly 2 million people are affected. For parents, therapists, and teachers, one of the most frustrating aspects of autism and similar disorders is that children affected are not social. They do not interact with others—even parents and siblings—and often seem unaware of the people and environment around them. In this work, therapist Ann E. Densmore takes us with her as she works with children with autism in a remarkable program she has developed to lead such children into the social world. They travel to farms, ponds, playgrounds, and other natural settings where they interact with peers and siblings, and with the novel therapist whose play therapy has brought remarkable results for many children. Using a conversational style that allows readers to look over her shoulder during sessions, Densmore explains her approach to inspiring social contact, Narrative Play. A child moves through four stages in this approach, finally combining language, play and narrative skills to interact with others. The work includes interviews with parents of children with autism, and will be of wide interest to professionals, teachers, parents, and family members who can use this approach to help a child move into the social world. This work, and the theory it promulgates will also interest students of psychology, special education, pediatrics, neurology, and speech.
