Book A Small Bequest

Download or read book A Small Bequest written by Edmund G. Love and published by Wayne State University Press. This book was released on 1987 with total page 248 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Small Bequest is the comic account of two city boys and their summer expedition through Michigan's Upper Peninsula in 1934. What begins as an innocent camping trip becomes a disaster of hilarious proportions for author Ed Love and his best friend, George French. Exploring Grandfather Perry's legacy—two sections of land in the sothwest quadrant of Luce County—the boys are beset by porcupines and poison ivy, blowouts and breakdowns and soon realize that the north woods scrub is no place for Eagle Scouts. Love is a keen observer of the American scene, and A Small Bequest is his witty reminder that all is not beautiful in the wilderness.

Book The Bequest

Download or read book The Bequest written by B. E. Baker and published by Purple Puppy Publishing. This book was released on 2021-11-30 with total page 377 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Two widows, six kiddos, and a will that leaves them a massive cattle ranch, but only if they work it for a year. Abigail and Amanda may have married brothers, but they have almost nothing else in common (and really, they never did get along very well). After their husbands both pass away, they have no reason to interact. Their connection drops to an awkward phone call on birthdays and an exchange of holiday cards. Until an eccentric uncle of their husbands' leaves a massive cattle ranch to the women's minor children. . . if they work the ranch themselves. A ranch that's located near a small town on the border of Wyoming that isn’t too keen on outsiders. They're both going to turn the bequest down, clearly. It’s not like either of them could properly raise their kids or find love again in a backwater province like Birch Creek. But when things at home change dramatically—for both moms—they decide to give it a try. . . just for the summer. What could possibly go wrong in a mere three months? (Or more importantly... what might go right?) Wall Street Journal and USA Today bestselling author Pamela Kelley said, "B. E. Baker takes you right to the heart of the small town that two widowed sisters-in-law land in very unexpectedly. Can they survive the year they need to spend there to keep it? I really enjoyed reading Bridget's romantic women's fiction debut." What are the experts saying? Publisher's Weekly says, "The Bequest [is] an endearing work of women's romantic fiction and the first in the Birch Creek Ranch series. [It] offers a compelling setup as two wildly different women are thrown together in the aftermath of their husbands' deaths. Baker's prose is candid, warm, and allows readers to feel immediately connected to the two protagonists. Baker brings freshness and fun to the story of two 'couldn't be more different' individuals who find they have more in common than they'd anticipated." B.E. Baker is an amazing storyteller! Wow! Women's fiction at its best. When you open this book, you might want some snacks handy, because you won't be able to stop until you finish. Highly recommend! --USA Today Bestselling Author, Tamie Dearen A sweet, feel-good story! Loved reading about these two women forging a new life for themselves and their children with all the challenges and joys of a ranch! --USA Today Bestselling Author, Amelia Addler I'm a huge fan of Baker's writing and this book is no exception. At once both a BIG story and one that's very intimate, you'll get two women's stories as they're forced together because of a will. Relocating to a ranch, these sisters-in-law and their families face challenges that bring them closer together and change the course of their lives. A great read if you love family sagas! --USA Today Bestselling Author, Emma St. Clair I was an early reader for this new book. If you like family focused women's fiction—and a ranch setting, you'll enjoy this story of two widowed sisters-in-laws and their children as they spend a summer on a Montana ranch that they may inherit. --USA Today and Wallstreet Journal Bestselling Author, Pamela Kelley kw: romantic women's fiction, women's fiction, family saga, saga, romance, clean romance, contemporary romance, ranch life, small town romance, western romance, cowboy romance, big city girl, bequest, birch creek ranch series, be baker, bridget baker, B. Book Transforming Small Organizations Through Bequests

Download or read book Transforming Small Organizations Through Bequests written by Joshua D. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2016 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The average bequest in the United States is $37,000. This is a large gift for organizations, big and small. But for startup and smaller organizations, a gift of this size may even be a game changer, because it represents a much higher proportion of their annual budge and assets. Despite the impact a bequest can make, 51 percent of regular direct mail donors report that no charity had ever asked them to include them in their will, and only a third of nonprofits make formal efforts to invite donors to consider bequests. These "un-asked" donors seem to represent a sea of potential for organizations. For this reason, this paper seeks to identify the best prospects for bequests, as well as their motivations, barriers, and how to best communicate with them. The goal will be to take these findings and provide insights an recommendations that can be used by small nonprofits and churches to increase their bequest pledges.

Book excerpt: “A novel as easy to read as the latest bestseller, No Country is a rousing adventure made up out of the blood and guts and dreams of people on three continents and nearly 150 years of troubled history” (Alan Cheuse, NPR). In the poverty of rural Ireland in 1843, Padraig Aherne and Brendan McCarthaigh grew up as brothers, inseparable, even when Padraig falls in love with their beautiful classmate, Brigid. But when Padraig makes a dangerous mistake that forces him onto a ship bound for India, and the deadly potato famine sweeps through their tiny village, Brendan is left alone to care for his best friend’s child, an infant daughter Padraig never knew he had. Eventually, Brendan flees with her aboard one of the infamous “coffin ships,” to begin a new life in America. As Brendan’s and Padraig’s two family trees take root on opposite sides of the world, their tendrils begin to intertwine, moving inexorably toward a disastrous convergence more than a century later. Unfurling against the fickle backdrop of history that includes terrorism on the Indian subcontinent, an East European pogrom, the Triangle Shirtwaist fire in New York City, and the terrible intimacy of a murder in a sleepy New England town, the fallout from lives torn apart in No Country smolders for generations.

London in the 1890s: nicely brought-up girls focus on one thing and one thing alone: marriage. The Season in London and, the ultimate goal, Coming Out as a debutante are therefore vital in leading them along this path. But along the way they have to survive a terrifying few months, a make-or-break time in which their family's hopes for them can only be fulfilled through a proposal. For Lady Emily Persse, Coming Out means leaving her beloved Ireland and its informalities for England and its stricter codes. For Portia Tradescant, released from the boredom of life in the English countryside, it means trying to get through the Season despite the best efforts of her eccentric Aunt Tattie. For beautiful May Danby, the Season is an entrée to a whole other life, worlds away from her strict convent upbringing in Yorkshire. A London Season is not just about the debutantes themselves. It is as much about the women who launch them, and the Society which supports their way of life. It is also about the battle for power, privilege and money, fought, not in the male tradition upon the battlefield, but in the female tradition...in the ballroom.

But when a family fracas turns deadly over an antique tea set, she’ll really have to pour through the clues before another crime is brewed up. With a “beautifully described setting and a cast of charming, small-town characters” (Booklist), this new installment in award-winning crime writer Vicki Delany’s Tea by the Sea Mystery series is a delightful treat for fans of Laura Childs’ Tea Shop Mysteries! Afternoon tea isn’t just about flavorful brews and delicious treats. It’s also about presentation—fine china teacups (never mugs!), with carefully coordinated saucers and plates. With her fragile stock running low, Lily visits an antiques fair where she snaps up a charming Peter Rabbit-themed tea set in a wicker basket, perfect for children’s events. But a few days later, a woman named Kimberly marches into the tearoom, rudely demanding to buy it back—then later returns and removes an envelope hidden in the basket’s lining. An acquaintance of Lily’s named Rachel is on the trail of the tea set too. Apparently, she and Kimberly are half-sisters, searching for their mother’s final will. But it’s more than a storm in a teacup when one of the sisters is found dead on the grounds of the B&B owned by Lily’s grandmother, Rose. Is this a simple case of greed boiling over, or are there other suspects in the blend? It’ll take some savvy sleuthing from Lily, Rose, and their allies to find the answers before a killer shatters more lives . . .

Book Undelivered Letters to Hudson s Bay Company Men on the Northwest Coast of America 1830 57

Download or read book Undelivered Letters to Hudson s Bay Company Men on the Northwest Coast of America 1830 57 written by Helen M. Buss and published by UBC Press. This book was released on 2011-11-01 with total page 513 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the early nineteenth century, when the Hudson’s Bay Company sent men to its furthest posts along the coast of North America’s Pacific Northwest, the letters of those who cared for those men followed them in the Company’s supply ships. Sometimes, these letters missed their objects – the men had returned to Britain, or deserted their ships, or died. The Company returned the correspondence to its London office and over the years amassed a file of “undelivered letters.” Many of these remained sealed for 150 years and until they were opened by archivist Judith Hudson Beattie, when the Company archives were moved to Canada. These letters tell the fascinating stories of ordinary people whose lives are rarely recounted in traditional histories. Beattie and Helen M. Buss skilfully introduce us to both the lives of the letter writers and their would-be recipients. Their commentaries frame, for contemporary readers, the words of early nineteenth century working and middle class British folk as well as letters to “voyageurs” from Quebec. The stories of their lives – fathers struggling to support a family, widowed mothers yearning to see their sons, bereft sweethearts left behind, and wives raising their children alone – reach out over two centuries to offer rare insight into the varied worlds of men and women in the early nineteenth century, many of whom became settlers in Washington, Oregon, and the new British colony of Vancouver Island.
