Book excerpt: "There be gold on that there island." In 1767, privateer Mackenzie McGuire seizes a Spanish galleon and wins more than a superior ship—the logbook contains half a treasure map for a tiny island off Nova Scotia. But he needs to know how to get past the deadly booby traps. Staying clear of English patrols, he sneaks into Halifax to obtain the keys to these traps, written on the map's other half. Part of a mother-daughter team, Flora works the Halifax waterfront to survive, picking pockets. In rolling one ruffian, they wind up with more than coins. When her mother dies and Flora is pursued, her path crosses McGuire's. She's admired him from afar. Now, with her new piece of information, can she bargain for what she really wants in life?

Book Mousie Garner

Download or read book Mousie Garner written by Paul Garner and published by McFarland. This book was released on 1999 with total page 228 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Paul "Mousie" Garner's career as a stooge (a "fall guy" or "assistant" to the head clown) began in vaudeville, when he and his partner were firing off jokes and one-liners, as well as leaping over oil-drums. Another part of the act, which could run as often as five times a day, involved Garner getting smashed over the head with plastic ukuleles. Garner's big break came when, across town, funnyman Ted Healy parted ways with his sidekicks, who went on to greater fame as The Three Stooges. Garner was then hired as a replacement stooge-and soon learned that Healy, unlike other slapstick comedians, actually slapped his partners in the face instead of just pretending. Thus was Garner given his first real lesson in the fine arts of stooging, which demanded quick reflexes and perfect timing. In fact, it was Healy who came up with the nickname "Mousie" because Garner was always so jumpy, nervous and quick. Needless to say the name stuck; and Mousie Garner would go on to form "The Rollicking Mousie Garner Trio," join the touring "New Stooges," and work steadily in radio, television, theater, clubs and movies.

Book excerpt: From award-winning author Daniel Fox comes a ravishingly written epic of revolution and romance set in a world where magic is found in stone and in water, in dragons and in men–and in the chains that bind them. Deposed by a vicious usurper, a young emperor flees with his court to the small island of Taishu. There, with a dwindling army, a manipulative mother, and a resentful population–and his only friend a local fishergirl he takes as a concubine–he prepares for his last stand. In the mountains of Taishu, a young miner finds a huge piece of jade, the potent mineral whose ingestion can gift the emperor with superhuman attributes. Setting out to deliver the stone to the embattled emperor, Yu Shan finds himself changing into something more than human, something forbidden. Meanwhile, a great dragon lies beneath the strait that separates Taishu from the mainland, bound by chains that must be constantly renewed by the magic of a community of monks. When the monks are slaughtered by a willful pirate captain, a maimed slave assumes the terrible burden of keeping the dragon subdued. If he should fail, if she should rise free, the result will be slaughter on an unimaginable scale. Now the prisoner beneath the sea and the men and women above it will shatter old bonds of loyalty and love and forge a common destiny from the ruins of an empire.

Book The Western Flyer

    Book Details:
  • Author : Kevin M. Bailey
  • Publisher : University of Chicago Press
  • Release : 2015-03-20
  • ISBN : 022611693X
  • Pages : 187 pages

Download or read book The Western Flyer written by Kevin M. Bailey and published by University of Chicago Press. This book was released on 2015-03-20 with total page 187 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “Written with deep passion and knowledge for the boat and the fish harvested from it. . . . a poignant warning about humanity’s impact on the globe.” —David B. Williams, Seattle Times In January 2010, the Gemini was moored in the Swinomish Slough on a Native American reservation near Anacortes, Washington. Unbeknownst to almost everyone, the rusted and dilapidated boat was in fact the most famous fishing vessel ever to have sailed: the original Western Flyer, immortalized in John Steinbeck’s nonfiction classic The Log from the Sea of Cortez. In this book, Kevin M. Bailey resurrects this forgotten witness to the changing tides of Pacific fisheries. He draws on the Steinbeck archives, interviews with family members of crew, and more than three decades of working in Pacific Northwest fisheries to trace the depletion of marine life through the voyages of a single ship. As the Western Flyer herself faces an uncertain future, debates about the status of West Coast fisheries have resurfaced. A compelling and timely tale of a boat and the people it carried, of fisheries exploited, and of fortunes won and lost, The Western Flyer is environmental history at its best: a journey through time and across the sea, charting the ebb and flow of the cobalt waters of the Pacific coast. “Of interest both to Steinbeck fans and readers of Paul Greenberg’s Four Fish.” —Library Journal “A rich blend of philosophy, ecology, history, and first-rate literature.” —Donald Gunderson, University of Washington—Carmel Finley Blog “A valuable conservation lesson, one that should be read by every aspiring fishery biologist. . . . Recommended.” —J. C. Briggs, Oregon State University—Choice
