Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketches of North Carolina I have the usual to offer for the publication of this little volume. It will sufficiently appear, by both the matter and the style, that it was not originally intended to assume this shape. When my friend Mr. Hope first solicited me to write something for his journal, I consented only on condition that he would accept such papers as I might be able to prepare in the midst of the wearisome and unending duties which devolve upon a country lawyer. He was pleased to say that he preferred such spontaneous productions to more studied and elaborate essays, as being better adapted to the columns of a daily newspaper. Thus encouraged I began the task, selecting, naturally and almost instinctively, North Carolina as my theme. The sketches were written under most unfavorable circumstances; many were penciled off at night after a fatiguing day of labor in the court-house, and others whilst on the circuit, without books of reference, and sent immediately off to the editor. My professional brethren, at least, will appreciate the tread-mill existence from which they sprang. After a few numbers were published, Mr. Hope surprised me very much by copyrighting the series, and informing me of his wish to publish in book form. To this I yielded reluctantly. I was conscious of their defects, of their careless manner of preparation, of their scattered and disconnected order; and yet worse, I did not have leisure to rewrite, correct, or add to them. Still I yielded to Mr. Hopes wish, and although the success of the enterprise is of course entirely problematical, I do not, and shall not regret the attempt. Book Charlotte in Picture and Prose

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Charlotte in Picture and Prose: An Historical and Descriptive Sketch of Charlotte, North Carolina Sugar Creek Churchhome in Germany, and the county-seat was called Charlotte, be ing also frequently known as the Queen City. This expression of loyalty to the mother-country, from subjects so far distant, was doubtless pleasing to the king who little dreamed that within a few years their allegiance would be boldly withdrawn. This change in sentiment was due to the fact that Scotland's sons had found in this same Piedmont region a country whose rugged beauty bore a strong resemblance to their former home; and here amid its hills and forests they sought that freedom of thought and action which in Scotland had been denied them. To this section of America, about the middle of the eighteenth cen tury, came many settlers, who were Scotch by birth, and from a temporary residence in Ireland, designated scotch-irish. From New Hampshire, Pennsylvania, and Maryland, following the mountains and valleys of the Appalachian Range, they moved south ward, and settled in Virginia, North Carolina, and South Caro lina. Book A Brief Sketch of Shelby

Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Sketch of Shelby: A Thriving Town in the Piedmont Section of North Carolina In presenting this little book to the public, it is designed to give them facts only, believing, as we do, that if the public generally knew of our superb climate and other advantages, that many would be impelled to come and settle among us and help further develop our town and County. With this object in view, we send it forth and invite all to visit us and be convinced. Shelby is destined to be a Railroad centre, a summer resort, and a town of commercial importance. Shelby is full of pluck, energy and enterprise. Only last fall one of her finest brick blocks was burned to the ground; to-day it is all rebuilt, substantial, in modern style, and an ornament to any town. No capital remains idle around Shelby; it pays to invest it and all do invest and receive handsome profits. Every day new advantages open up and more money can be used to advantage. The whole town invites capital and population of pushing and go ahead people, no idlers are wanted. A large Hotel in modern style would be a paying investment now. A street car line to Cleveland Springs (distant two miles) would pay. It will pay to invest in Real Estate now. Cotton Factories pay. We could go on and mention many things that would pay, but space forbids. Read the different articles in this pamphlet and see what has been done and what is doing. Any information in regard to anything about Shelby will be cheerfully answered by the Clerk of the Town Council, or C. E. Frick, Real Estate Agent. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Sketch of a Sermon, Delivered Before the North Carolina Bible Society, at Its Anniversary: In the City of Raleigh, on Sunday, the 12th of December, 1841 And now, with this probability strengthening upon it, where shall the human mind turn to find this revelation? It is not upon the page of Nature, for that has been studied in vain. And of the many theories which have been pre sented, each has in its turn been discarded as unsatisfactory. The Bible is now presented with its high claims to a divine origin, and the human mind is called upon to render a ver dict in favor of this volume, as being a production ofinfinite mind. Its defenders say that it brings more external and internal evidence of its genuineness and authenticity, than any other book in existence. They say that it contains all that it is necessary for us to know concerning the nature of the Creative Cause, of ourselves, our duties and our destiny. They claim for it a character of truthfulness without the slightest. Mixture of error and challenge for it an examina tion by the light of all learning and the scrutiny of the severest tests. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sketch of the Town of Summerville, South Carolina So far as is known there is no complete, connected and full history of the Town of Summerville, and though it would be impossible in an article, limited as this must necessarily be, to attempt such a history, I shall endeavor to set forth in a more or less connected narrative, such facts and references as I have been able to gather in the limited time at my disposal. They will thus be preserved and possibly, as a nucleus, will aid some future chronicler in the preparation of a more pretentious History. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from North Carolina Poems: Selected and Edited, With an Introduction, Notes and Biographical Sketches The poems are arranged alphabetically by authors and we have endeavored to give notes sufficient to make the poems clear. But so far as possible, we have purposely avoided giving foot-notes, preferring instead to give all necessary notes immediately under the subject of the poem. We do not claim supremacy for every author. But we do believe that the teacher will find poems of real merit in this volume and many others possessing local significance that will give pleasure to the reader. It is not intended that North Carolina Poems shall be made a regular text-book. But we do believe that every school should possess a few copies, and at the proper time the teacher should put the book in the hands of the pupil of about the sixth or the seventh grades, and teacher and pupil should read the poems together. With such use in view, the inclusion of love poems and dialect verse has been purposely avoided. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
