Download or read book A Sketch of Morality Independent of Obligation Or Sanction Classic Reprint written by M. Guyau and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-06 with total page 236 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sketch of Morality Independent of Obligation or Sanction There can be little doubt that the present moment offers a fit opportunity for introducing to a large circle of English readers this book of Guyau's, which, in his own country, is rightly considered his masterpiece. Guyau is already known in England by his remarkable and suggestive work on Education and Heredity and The Irreligion of the Future; and another work from him, on so important a subject as Morality, may furnish a much-needed source of inspiration and encouragement, at a time when moral science is evidently entering upon a period of renewed energy and wider interest. Stimulated by the great difficulties of an ever-increasing complexity of life, under circumstances which render many of the old creeds and religions incompetent to grapple with the problems demanding solution; distressed by a mental chaos which threatens to retard all progressive efforts by fitful reactions; the lovers of freedom and social amelioration turn to Morality for the support and the strengthgiving quality without which life is doomed to decay and destruction. Book The Ethics of Epicurus and its Relation to Contemporary Doctrines

Download or read book The Ethics of Epicurus and its Relation to Contemporary Doctrines written by Jean-Marie Guyau and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2021-09-09 with total page 305 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is the first English translation of a compelling and highly original reading of Epicurus by Jean-Marie Guyau. This book has long been recognized as one of the best and most concerted attempts to explore one of the most important, yet controversial ancient philosophers whose thought, Guyau claims, remains vital to modern and contemporary culture. Throughout the text we are introduced to the origins of the philosophy of pleasure in Ancient Greece, with Guyau clearly demonstrating how this idea persists through the history of philosophy and how it is an essential trait in the Western tradition. With an introduction by Keith Ansell-Pearson and Federico Testa, which contextualizes the work of Guyau within the canon of French thought, and notes on both further reading and on Epicurean scholarship more generally, this translation also acts as a critical introduction to the philosophy of Guyau and Epicurus.

Book Critique of the Empiricist Explanation of Morality

Download or read book Critique of the Empiricist Explanation of Morality written by C. W. Maris and published by Springer. This book was released on 2013-11-22 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: a. 'Two things fill the mind with ever new and increasing admiration and awe, the oftener and the more steadily we reflect on them: the starry heavens above and the moral law within. ' Thus Kant formulates his attitude to morality (Critique of Practical Reason, p. 260). He draws a sharp distinction between these two objects of admiration. The starry sky, he writes, represents my relationship to the natural, empirical world. Moral law, on the other hand, is of a completely different order. It ' . . . begins from my invisible self, my personality, and exhibits me in a world which has true infinity, but which is traceable only by the understanding and with which I discern that I am not in a merely contingent but in a universal and necessary connection (. . . ). ' (p. 260). So Kant sees morality as a separate metaphysical order opposed to the world of empirical phenomena. Human beings belong to both worlds. According to Kant, the personality derives nothing of value from its relationship with the empirical world. His part in the sensuous world of nature places man on a level with any animal which before long must give back to the rest of nature the substances of which it is made.
