Book The Demon Under the Microscope

Download or read book The Demon Under the Microscope written by Thomas Hager and published by Crown. This book was released on 2007-08-28 with total page 354 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In The Demon Under the Microscope, Thomas Hager chronicles the dramatic history of sulfa, the first antibiotic and the drug that shaped modern medicine. The Nazis discovered it. The Allies won the war with it. It conquered diseases, changed laws, and single-handedly launched the era of antibiotics. Sulfa saved millions of lives—among them those of Winston Churchill and Franklin Delano Roosevelt Jr.—but its real effects are even more far reaching. Sulfa changed the way new drugs were developed, approved, and sold; transformed the way doctors treated patients; and ushered in the era of modern medicine. The very concept that chemicals created in a lab could cure disease revolutionized medicine, taking it from the treatment of symptoms and discomfort to the eradication of the root cause of illness. A strange and colorful story, The Demon Under the Microscope illuminates the vivid characters, corporate strategy, individual idealism, careful planning, lucky breaks, cynicism, heroism, greed, hard work, and the central (though mistaken) idea that brought sulfa to the world. This is a fascinating scientific tale with all the excitement and intrigue of a great suspense novel.

Book The Signature of God Revised Edition

Download or read book The Signature of God Revised Edition written by Grant R. Jeffrey and published by WaterBrook. This book was released on 2010-07-20 with total page 338 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: YOU CAN BELIEVE THE BIBLE. WITHOUT ANY DOUBT. As American society becomes more secularized, Christians need to know all the facts about the Bible. Dr. Grant R. Jeffrey has spent decades researching history, science, archaeology, medicine, and prophecy--finding that each discipline confirms the truth of Scripture. This revised and updated edition of The Signature of God proves that the Bible is not only accurate in its spiritual claims, but is completely reliable as well on matters of origins, medicine, history, and science. Historians of the ancient world--as well as recent archaeological finds--confirm the names of kings and kingdoms, and the dates of wars and mass migrations mentioned in the Bible. Recent breakthroughs in astronomy, physics, and medical science have shown that God's Word accurately described the universe and the processes of human life before scientific research caught up. And hundreds of fulfilled prophecies show that God revealed the future to his prophets in order to undergird the faith of his people. No matter how loudly the skeptics argue against Christian faith, only one conclusion makes sense: the Bible is God-breathed. You can believe every word, every claim, every prophecy, and every miracle. With no doubts.

Download or read book The World of Caffeine written by Bennett Alan Weinberg and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2004-11-23 with total page 428 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Caffeine is the world's most popular drug! Almost all of us start our day with a jolt of caffeine from coffee, tea or cola. And many of us crave chocolate when we're stressed or depressed. Without it we're lethargic, head-achy and miserable. Why? Why do we crave caffeine? How much do we really know about our number one drug of choice? Here is the first natural, cultural, and artistic history of our favorite mood enhancer--how it was discovered, its early uses, and the unexpected parts it has played in medicine, religion, painting, poetry, learning, and love. Weinberg and Bealer tell an intriguing story of a remarkable substance that has figured prominently in the exchanges of trade and intelligence among nations and whose most common sources, coffee, tea, and chocolate, have been both promoted as productive of health and creativity and banned as corrupters of the body and mind or subverters of social order. Some Highlights From the World of Caffeine Balzac's addiction to caffeine drove him to eat coffee, as some schizophrenic patients are observed to do today, and may have killed him Mary Tuke breaks the male monopoly on tea in England in 1725 The ways caffeine functions as a smart pill Goethe's responsibility for the discovery of caffeine Did a mini Ice Age help bring coffee, tea and chocolate to popularity in Europe? What is the mystery of coffee's origin? As good as gold: the stories of how caffeine, in its various forms, was used as cash in China, Africa, Central America and Egypt What does the civet cat have to do with the most costly coffee on earth today? The World of Caffeine is a captivating tale of art and society -- from India to Balzac to cybercafes -- and the ultimate caffeine resource.

Download or read book Gliomas written by J. Hekmatpanah and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2012-12-06 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When I was asked by the Cancer Teaching Committee of the University of Chicago to set up a Symposium on Brain Tumors, I welcomed the opportunity to do so. But I felt that "Brain Tumors" was far too broad a subject to cover in a day and a half meeting. Furthermore, during the past decade, there have been a great many papers and symposiums on technical advancements in the treatment of benign brain tumors. On the other hand, while gliomas make up somewhere around 50% of all brain tumors, there have certainly been far fewer communications about them. For this reason I thought that it would be highly valuable to invite some of the leading investigators to share with us their experience with gliomas. The hope was to learn the current concepts about these tumors biologically and therapeutically, specifically to find out what we are doing and where we are going in these respects. Naturally all aspects could not be covered. Nevertheless, it was a widely expressed opinion by the speakers that they too learned while they came to teach. It is therefore hoped that the publication of their works and ideas through this mono graph will also be useful for the reader. Most of the manu scripts were handed in at the time of the Symposium, and a few were sent later. Except for minor editorial changes the words are entirely those of the speakers and authors.

Book Targeting Biofilms in Translational Research Device Development and Industrial Sectors

Download or read book Targeting Biofilms in Translational Research Device Development and Industrial Sectors written by Dustin L. Williams and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2019-11-06 with total page 170 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book offers a much-needed discussion on the targeting of biofilm-related infections. Chapters include discussions on the impact of biofilm on medical implants, industrial applications, as well as wound and tissue infections. It also offers discussions on regulatory management for industrial sectors and medical environments. Given that there continues to be a paucity of effective antimicrobial products, devices, and coatings in clinical and industrial use that effectively reduce rates of infection or biofilm-related problems, Targeting Biofilms in Translational Research, Device Development, and Industrial Sectors, offers a fresh and much-needed perspective aimed at helping create healthier controlled environments and safer devices. This comprehensive book is indispensable for industrial and academic translational researchers, device developers, and regulatory experts looking to create more effective antimicrobial products.
