Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sketch of Ancient Philosophy From Thales to Cicero The readers whom I have chiefly had in my mind, in writing the following sketch of Ancient Philosophy, are undergraduates at the university or others who are commencing the study of the philosophical works of Cicero or Plato or Aristotle in the original language. It has been my wish to supply to them, what I remember vainly seeking when I was in their position, something which may help them to find their bearings in the new world into which they are plunged on first making acquaintance with such books as Cicero's De Finibus or the Republic of Plato. The only helps which I had in similar circumstances some thirty years ago were a translation of Schleiermacher's Introduction to the Dialogues of Plato, of which I could make nothing, and Lewes' small Biographical History of Philosophy, of which the aim, as far as I could judge, was to show that, as philosophy was moonshine, it was mere waste of time to read what the philosophers had written. Things have changed since then. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2015-06-29 with total page 520 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Academic Questions, Treatise De Finibus, and Tusculan Disputations, of M. T. Cicero: With a Sketch of the Greek Philosophers Mentioned by Cicero In the works translated in the present volume, Cicero makes such constant references to the doctrines and systems of the ancient Greek Philosophers, that it seems desirable to give a brief account of the most remarkable of those mentioned by him; not entering at length into the history of their lives, but indicating the principal theories which they maintained, and the main points in which they agreed with, or differed from, each other. The earliest of them was Thales, who was born at Miletus, about 640 B.C. He was a man of great political sagacity and influence; but we have to consider him here as the earliest philosopher who appears to have been convinced of the necessity of scientific proof of whatever was put forward to be believed, and as the originator of mathematics and geometry. He was also a great astronomer; for we read in Herodotus (i. 74) that he predicted the eclipse of the sun which happened in the reign of Alyattes, king of Lydia, B.C. 609. He asserted that water is the origin of all things; that everything is produced out of it, and everything is resolved into it. He also asserted that it is the soul which originates all motion, so much so, that he attributes a soul to the magnet. Aristotle also represents him as saying that everything is full of Gods. He does not appear to have left any written treatises behind him: we are uncertain when or where he died, but he is said to have lived to a great age - to 78, or, according to some writers, to 90 years of age. Book The Philosophical Books of Cicero

Download or read book The Philosophical Books of Cicero written by Paul Lachlan MacKendrick and published by Bloomsbury Academic. This book was released on 1989 with total page 446 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Cicero was keenly interested in Greek philosophy and his philosophical books were an important popular vehicle of Greek philosophy in later ages. Professor MacKendrick presents a useful conspectus of all Cicero's philosophical books with an analysis of their structure, background and intention. His thesis is that most if not all of them are cast in a rhetorical form; that for Cicero rhetoric and philosophy have the same goals: proving his point, winning adherents to it and stimulating his auditory, for most of these books are conceived as dialogues. Unity of form suggests that Cicero planned them as a unified whole. Ironically, their very charm of style has caused them to be dubbed superficial and unoriginal, but Cicero lived with philosophers all his life, and many an alleged source may in fact be a set of ideas assimilated by a well-read mind. Open-minded readers will respond warmly to his high morality, his respect for the rule of law, his humanism, scepticism and flair. A final chapter and appendix outline the immense influenc that Cicero's philosophical books exerted on the history of European thought.

This book was released on 2023-12 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "The Academic Questions," written through the renowned Roman philosopher and statesman Marcus Tullius Cicero, is a widespread work within the discipline of ancient philosophy. Composed inside the shape of a speak, this philosophical treatise explores the tenets of the Academic school of concept, which Cicero himself championed. Cicero's work, dependent as a talk amongst diverse characters, commonly specializes in the arguments and perspectives of the skeptical Academy, a faculty of philosophy founded by means of Arcesilaus and later delicate through Carneades. The vital subject matter of the textual content revolves around the query of how you will acquire know-how and the character of certainty. Cicero examines the epistemological demanding situations posed with the aid of skepticism and explores the competing thoughts inside Academic philosophy concerning what can in reality be known. The communicate is likewise marked by way of its engagement with current philosophical debates, addressing troubles which include the reliability of the senses and the position of cause in forming beliefs. "The Academic Questions" is splendid for its erudition, its function in retaining and transmitting Greek philosophical notion, and its affect on later Western philosophy.
