Book excerpt: This paper applies the variable growth intercept modelling technique to three species of interior spruce in the sub-boreal spruce and Engelmann spruce-subalpine fir biogeoclimatic zones in British Columbia: Picea engelmannii Parry, Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, and their cross. The variable growth intercept model allows foresters to estimate spruce site index from the first 1-30 years of height growth above breast height of a stand. Results presented from the analysis of the models includes parameter estimates, their standard error, the root mean square error, the W statistic for normality, the Fk statistic for homoscedasticity, and the degree of apparent bias in the model.

Book excerpt: The Stony Lake trial was established in 1987 to benchmark growth performance of interior spruce and lodgepole pine planted into 12 treatment regimes for rehabilitating an understocked sub-boreal spruce site. All combinations of three options for primary site clearing treatments (burn, spray and burn, or windrow), two options for secondary site preparation treatments (disc-trenching or no disc-trenching), and two options for tertiary weeding treatments (broadcast application of herbicide three years after planting or no treatment) were tested. The objectives of this report were to 1) document the status of interior spruce and lodgepole pine trees planted into the 12 treatment regimes at the Stony Lake long-term research trial and 2) use these early growth data to customize Tree and Stand Simulator (TASS) runs to project potential impact on yield and expected value at rotation.--Includes text from document.

Book excerpt: Juvenile height models have been developed with data collected from a small area of British Columbia for lodgepole pine and interior spruce. The purpose of the project described in this report is to validate these models with data from six biogeoclimatic zones where lodgepole pine & interior spruce commonly occur. Trees were sampled from plots in each zone and annual height was measured directly from pith nodes. A rigorous validation procedure was applied to validate the models for the province as a whole and on a zonal basis. A slight bias revealed in the models led to refitting of new models to the new data. A small validation of the new model for lodgepole pine demonstrates whether it is adequate for use in the interior Douglas fir zone.

Book excerpt: Growth intercept models can compute site index (which measures the capacity of an area of land to grow trees of a given species) from early average height growth of trees. This guide describes a growth intercept model for coastal Douglas fir in British Columbia. The model was developed from a study of 48 analysis plots in which three trees in each plot were selected for intensive sampling, reconstruction of growth history, and calculation of site index and growth intercept. The resulting model consists of 50 functions. Four refinements to the growth intercept modelling technique are introduced, which improve the functional form of the model and improve the data collection and analysis procedures.
