Book Current Trends in the Historiography of Inquisitions

This book was released on 2024-03-28T10:04:00+01:00 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This volume launches the book series of “Inquire – International Centre for Research on Inquisitions” of the University of Bologna, a research network that engages with the history of religious justice from the 13th to the 20th century. This first publication offers twenty chapters that take stock of the current historiography on medieval and early modern Inquisitions (the Spanish, Portuguese and Roman Inquisitions) and their modern continuations. Through the analysis of specific questions related to religious repression in Europe and the Iberian colonial territories extending from the Middle Ages to today, the contributions here examine the history of the perception of tribunals and the most recent historiographical trends. New research perspectives thus emerge on a subject that continues to intrigue those interested in the practices of justice and censorship, the history of religious dissent and the genesis of intolerance in the Western world and beyond.

Book Papal Justice in the Late Middle Ages

Download or read book Papal Justice in the Late Middle Ages written by Kirsi Salonen and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2016-04-14 with total page 246 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This is a study of the history and function of the highest ecclesiastical tribunal, the Sacra Romana Rota, from the twelfth to the sixteenth centuries. Despite its importance for Christendom and in contrast with other important papal offices, the activity of the Rota has never been thoroughly investigated on the basis of archival sources, in large part due to the vast source material and the perceived "difficulty" of the subject. This book fills this significant gap by explaining how the Rota functioned-its organization, the phases of a Rota process, everyday practices at the tribunal-and the kinds of issues it handled, where the processes originated from and how long they lasted. The study demonstrates that the Rota dealt with a range of cases much broader than has previously been acknowledged, whilst also confirming that the tribunal mainly oversaw litigation over benefices. The results of this research reveal the true role of the Rota and its significance for Christians from the middle ages to the dawn of the Reformation.

Book excerpt: This book is one woman's report from the front lines of digital dating. Grace Anderson, a novelist with grown children, an ex-husband, an age beginning with the number "4" and an acute case of writer's block, turns to cyberspace for diversion/inspiration. She finds it in the form of a bright, charming, articulate, obviously accomplished man she meets in a chat room late one evening. The two of them begin to build a relationship the old-fashioned way - with their words and their imaginations. When her cyberspace swain turns three-dimensional, the good news is that he is indeed bright, charming, articulate, obviously accomplished, and better yet, drop-dead handsome. The more, interesting news is that he is a Princeton University Wunderkind, twenty-eight years her junior--younger than both of Grace's sons. So, just what happens when the perfect love meets a most socially unacceptable age gap? The road to finding that out will captivate you. The storyline is timely... and the romance... timeless.

Book Ecclesia et Violentia

  • Author : Radosław Kotecki
  • Publisher : Cambridge Scholars Publishing
  • Release : 2014-10-17
  • ISBN : 1443870021

Download or read book Ecclesia et Violentia written by Radosław Kotecki and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2014-10-17 with total page 375 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Ecclesia et Violentia is an interdisciplinary anthology that explores the phenomenon of violence in relation to the medieval Church, as well as within the structures of that institution. The volume provides a clearer understanding of hostile and violent acts against both religious institutions and clergy, and explores the interpersonal aggression between clergymen or forms of violent behaviour of medieval clerics. It investigates, furthermore, the role of violence in maintaining discipline within religious communities, as well as religious, legal and cultural interpretations of the aforementioned issues. However, despite the many points of view expressed here, the central question the authors reconcile is how the phenomenon of violence interacted with the most important medieval institution, and official Church thinking regarding concepts such as power, rank, feudal loyalty and protection and ownership. Through the geographical diversity of the contributions and the variety of disciplinary perspectives, this book highlights how important violence was in the life of the clergy and how it formed an integral part of the legal culture and social bonds in many regions of medieval Europe.

Raising an inquisitive boy, Georgie, as a single mother and running the law firm and other endeavors that she and Hank had begun was a huge challenge that demanded all of her time. Jack, her half-brother, was helpful with Georgie but often added to her burdens when he became periodically unpredictable. As life moved on, she was able to balance all of this until she met two men. Adam, a ranch hand with an easy living style and smooth moves, and Jerry, a long-time supportive friend who hides his true feelings, both challenged her to introspection and the need to discover what sort of future she wished for herself.

Book Walking in the Will of God

Download or read book Walking in the Will of God written by Steve McVey and published by Harvest House Publishers. This book was released on 2009-04-01 with total page 171 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The success of Steve McVey’s books—beginning with the 225,000–selling Grace Walk—testifies to readers’ hunger to get free of performance–focused Christianity and rediscover the grace–filled, relational God of the Scriptures. The issue of God’s will confuses and frustrates many believers. Steve McVey helps and encourages them with key biblical principles: Focusing on rules, Christians end up anxious, hesitant, and distant from their compassionate Father. Focusing on God’s relationship with them, Christians will feel assured He is a Person to trust, not a formula to figure out. Believers can relax, knowing that God wants to guide them and has given them the life and mind of Christ. The result of the grace–based relationship? A bold, no–regrets life, lived in light of God’s complete dependability. This kind of life—the kind of life every Christian desires—is revealed in Walking in the Will of God.
