Book A Sin by Any Other Name

Download or read book A Sin by Any Other Name written by Robert W. Lee and published by Convergent Books. This book was released on 2019-04-02 with total page 195 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A descendant of Confederate General Robert E. Lee chronicles his story of growing up with the South's most honored name, and the moments that forced him to confront the privilege, racism, and subversion of human dignity that came with it. With a foreword by Rev. Dr. Bernice A. King. The Reverend Robert W. Lee was a little-known pastor at a small church in North Carolina until the Charlottesville protests, when he went public with his denunciation of white supremacy in a captivating speech at the MTV Video Music Awards. Support poured in from around the country, but so did threats of violence from people who opposed the Reverend's message. In this riveting memoir, he narrates what it was like growing up as a Lee in the South, an experience that was colored by the world of the white Christian majority. He describes the widespread nostalgia for the Lost Cause and his gradual awakening to the unspoken assumptions of white supremacy which had, almost without him knowing it, distorted his values and even his Christian faith. In particular, Lee examines how many white Christians continue to be complicit in a culture of racism and injustice, and how after leaving his pulpit, he was welcomed into a growing movement of activists all across the South who are charting a new course for the region. A Sin by Any Other Name is a love letter to the South, from the South, by a Lee—and an unforgettable call for change and renewal.

Book Learning and Motivation in the Postsecondary Classroom

Download or read book Learning and Motivation in the Postsecondary Classroom written by Marilla D. Svinicki and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2004-03-15 with total page 291 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: While the annals of educational psychology and scholarship of learning theory are vast, this book distills the most important material that the higher education faculty need, translating it into clear language, and rendering from it examples that can be readily applied in the college classroom. Understanding theory can enrich one’s own teaching by increasing efficiency and effectiveness of both the instructor and the student, promoting creativity, encouraging self-reflection and professional development, and advancing classroom research. Finally, a good grounding in theory can help faculty navigate when a student is having difficulty. This clearly written book outlines the learning theories: cognitive, concept learning, social learning, and constructivist, as well as the motivation theories: expectancy value, attribution, achievement goal orientation, and self-determination. It then delves deeper into each one, showing how to develop rich, meaningful instruction so that students master basic information and move into deeper levels of learning.

Book The Sin Blue Line How God delivered me from the LAPD and other miracles

Download or read book The Sin Blue Line How God delivered me from the LAPD and other miracles written by Barry Brooks J.D. and published by Christian Faith Publishing, Inc.. This book was released on 2017-06-15 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the age of twenty-three, Barry Brooks was saved after accepting Jesus Christ as his Lord and Savior. Shortly thereafter, the Lord called Barry from a quiet, small town in New England to South Central Los Angeles and the LAPD. As many deadly threats faced Barry on a daily basis on the streets of Los Angeles during the crack wars of the late 1980s and 1990s, his biggest battle would come not from the dangers of the street but from within the ranks of the LAPD. After exposing systematic corruption leading all the way up to the chief of police and city officials, Barry would endure a seventeen-year battle of retaliation which came very close to costing him his life, his liberty (prison) and certainly his career. However, God manifested Himself in overt and incredible ways during this time of trial giving Barry the strength to resist and at the same time grow in his faith. Although Barry's story reveals the sin of the LAPD's thin blue line, the main purpose of this book as revealed by God to Barry is simply to Glorify God.

  • Pages : 340 pages

Download or read book Classroom Lessons written by Kate McGilly and published by MIT Press. This book was released on 1994 with total page 340 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A timely complement to John Bruer's Schools for Thought, Classroom Lessons documents eight projects that apply cognitive research to improve classroom practice. The chapter authors are all principal investigators in an influential research initiative on cognitive science and education. Classroom Lessons describes their collaborations with classroom teachers aimed at improving teaching and learning for students in grades K-12. The eight projects cover writing, mathematics, history, social science, and physics. Together they illustrate that principles emerging from cognitive science form the basis of a science of instruction that can be applied across the curriculum. The book is divided into three sections: applications of cognitive research to teaching specific content areas; applications for learning across the curriculum; and applications that challenge traditional concepts of classroom-based learning environments. Chapters consider explicit models of knowledge with corresponding instruction designed to enable learners to build on that knowledge, acquisition of specified knowledge, and what knowledge is useful in contemporary curricula. Book Reconstructing Agency in Developmental and Educational Psychology

Download or read book Reconstructing Agency in Developmental and Educational Psychology written by Paul Downes and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2019-09-05 with total page 267 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book reconstructs the foundations of developmental and educational psychology and fills an important gap in the field by arguing for a specific spatial turn so that human growth, experience and development focus not only on time but space. This regards space not simply as place. Highlighting concrete cross-cultural relational spaces of concentric and diametric spatial systems, the book argues that transition between these systems offers a new paradigm for understanding agency and inclusion in developmental and educational psychology, and for relating experiential dimensions to causal explanations. The chapters examine key themes for developing concentric spatial systemic responses in education, including school climate, bullying, violence, early school leaving prevention and students’ voices. Moreover, the book proposes an innovative framework of agency as movement between concentric and diametric spatial relations for a reconstruction of resilience. This model addresses the vital neglected issue of resistance to sheer cultural conditioning and goes beyond the foundational ideas of Bronfenbrenner’s ecological systems theory, as well as Vygotsky, Skinner, Freud, Massey, Bruner, Gestalt and postmodern psychology to reinterpret them in dynamic spatial systemic terms. Written by an internationally renowned expert, this book is a valuable resource for academics, researchers and postgraduate students in the areas of educational and developmental psychology, as well as related areas such as personality theory, health psychology, social work, teacher education and anthropology.

Book Nobody Cries When We Die

Download or read book Nobody Cries When We Die written by Patrick B. Reyes and published by Chalice Press. This book was released on 2016-12-13 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When the screams of innocents dying engulf you, how do you hear God's voice? Will God and God's people call you to life when your breath is being strangled out of you? For people of color living each day surrounded by violence, for whom survival is not a given, vocational discernment is more than "finding your purpose" - it's a matter of life and death. Patrick Reyes shares his story of how the community around him - his grandmother, robed clergy, educators, friends, and neighbors - saved him from gang life, abuse, and the economic and racial oppression that threatened to kill him before he ever reached adulthood. A story balancing the tension between pain and healing, Nobody Cries When We Die takes you to the places that make American society flinch, redefines what you are called to do with your life, and gives you strength to save lives and lead in your own community. Book Honoring God in Red or Blue

Download or read book Honoring God in Red or Blue written by Dr. Amy E. Black and published by Moody Publishers. This book was released on 2012-05-25 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Politics isn’t a four-letter word. Everyone’s been at that dinner party. The conversation takes a political turn. The arguments start, the atmosphere grows tense, and all that remains is a hopeless stalemate and an awkward silence. Makes you wonder . . . is thoughtful and productive dialogue about politics even possible? In Honoring God in the Red or Blue, Dr. Amy Black addresses the debaters as well as those intimidated or annoyed by the debaters; political junkies and the contented uninvolved. She explains the purposes and limitations of our system and helps readers create realistic expectations for government. While God’s truth is perfect, human application of it is not, a reality that shouldn’t deter us from engaging in debate and staying informed. Rather, it should challenge us to raise our standards for how we speak about the issues—and those in office. It’s time to approach political divides with an extra measure of grace. Success begins with seeking God’s honor first and foremost, regardless of where we fall on the political spectrum. Don’t limit yourself to chatting about the weather.
