Book Precise Geodetic Infrastructure

Download or read book Precise Geodetic Infrastructure written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2010-10-25 with total page 157 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Geodesy is the science of accurately measuring and understanding three fundamental properties of Earth: its geometric shape, its orientation in space, and its gravity field, as well as the changes of these properties with time. Over the past half century, the United States, in cooperation with international partners, has led the development of geodetic techniques and instrumentation. Geodetic observing systems provide a significant benefit to society in a wide array of military, research, civil, and commercial areas, including sea level change monitoring, autonomous navigation, tighter low flying routes for strategic aircraft, precision agriculture, civil surveying, earthquake monitoring, forest structural mapping and biomass estimation, and improved floodplain mapping. Recognizing the growing reliance of a wide range of scientific and societal endeavors on infrastructure for precise geodesy, and recognizing geodetic infrastructure as a shared national resource, this book provides an independent assessment of the benefits provided by geodetic observations and networks, as well as a plan for the future development and support of the infrastructure needed to meet the demand for increasingly greater precision. Precise Geodetic Infrastructure makes a series of focused recommendations for upgrading and improving specific elements of the infrastructure, for enhancing the role of the United States in international geodetic services, for evaluating the requirements for a geodetic workforce for the coming decades, and for providing national coordination and advocacy for the various agencies and organizations that contribute to the geodetic infrastructure.

Book The Use of Artificial Satellites for Geodesy

Download or read book The Use of Artificial Satellites for Geodesy written by Soren W. Henriksen and published by American Geophysical Union. This book was released on 1972 with total page 293 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Published by the American Geophysical Union as part of the Geophysical Monograph Series, Volume 15. This monograph contains 34 communications presented at the Third International Symposium on the Use of Artificial Satellites for Geodesy in 1971, and 4 invited papers on subjects that complement the others and provide continuity. All contributions represent the most recent findings in the theoretical and applied fields of satellite geodesy, including new instrumentation (satellite sensors and ground equipment) of potential use in satellite geodesy. The two preceding symposiums were held at Washington, D.C., in 1962 and at Athens, Greece, in 1965. The Proceedings of the first were published by North-Holland Publishing Company, Amsterdam, in 1963, and the Proceedings of the second by the National Technical University, Athens, in 1967. The prime mover behind both was George Veis, and his continuing dedication to this subject was in large measure responsible for scheduling this third symposium.

  • Release : 1969
  • ISBN :
  • Pages : 220 pages

Download or read book Apollo 11 Preliminary Science Report written by United States. National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Scientific and Technical Information Division and published by . This book was released on 1969 with total page 220 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The scientific part of the Apollo 11 mission was planned and executed with great care. The samples of lunar soil and rocks returned by the astronauts will add much detailed scientific information. The photographs and observations of the crew have already answered some questions man has asked for thousands of years. The emplaced experiments have yielded data unavailable until now. This report is preliminary and covers only the initial scientific results of the Apollo 11 mission. The publication includes a summary of scientific results and chapters about photographic summary of Apollo 11 mission, crew observations, geologic setting of the lunar samples returned by the Apollo 11 mission, Apollo 11 soil mechanics investigation, preliminary examination of lunar samples, passive seismic experiment, laser ranging retroreflector, the solar-wind composition experiment, lunar surface closeup stereoscopic photography, and the modified dust detector in the early Apollo scientific experiments package.

Book Global Geoid and Gravity Anomaly Predictions Using the Collocation and Point Mass Techniques

Download or read book Global Geoid and Gravity Anomaly Predictions Using the Collocation and Point Mass Techniques written by Robert P. Bessette and published by . This book was released on 1984 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We previously described (14,14) spherical-harmonic global adjustments of satellite altimetry using the AFGL short-arc technique supplemented with point masses to allow incorporation of short-wavelength geoidal detail. Recently, we have also investigated another technique to enhance short-wavelength detail: least squares collocation with noise. Both methods provide a means to determine a high resolution gravity field on a local, regional or global scale. Statistical comparisons of these two methods have been made in selected areas and the results tabulated.
