Book Aspen Succession in the Intermountain West

Download or read book Aspen Succession in the Intermountain West written by Dale L. Bartos and published by . This book was released on 1983 with total page 64 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A deterministic model of succession in aspen forests was developed using existing data and intuition. The degree of uncertainty, which was determined by allowing the parameter values to vary at random within limits, was larger than desired. This report presents results of an analysis of model sensitivity to changes in parameter values. These results have indicated areas of needed research. The model responds realistically to various management techniques and could be an aid to resource managers in their decisionmaking process.

Book Natural Regeneration of Subalpine Fir and Engelmann Spruce in Partially Harvested High elevation Stands in East central British Columbia

Download or read book Natural Regeneration of Subalpine Fir and Engelmann Spruce in Partially Harvested High elevation Stands in East central British Columbia written by O. A. Steen and published by British Columbia Forest Science Program. This book was released on 2008 with total page 46 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines factors affecting natural restocking of small openings created by partial harvesting of high elevation (> 1500 m) Engelmann spruce (Picea engelmannii Parry ex Engelm.)-subalpine fir (Abies lasiocarpa [Hook.] Nutt.) stands in east-central British Columbia, Canada. We examined the effects of opening size (0.03, 0.13, and 1.0 ha), seedbed, and seed supply on density of post-logging regeneration for 10 years post-harvest. The effect of opening size on growth release of advance regeneration was also examined. Both seed production and seedbed limited densities of post-logging seedlings. Densities of subalpine fir and Engelmann spruce post-logging regeneration remained low at two sites where seedfall was low. Seedbed scarification significantly increased seedling densities where seed rain was high. In the absence of scarification, abundant seed production had little effect on post-logging seedling densities. Increased height and basal diameter growth of advance regeneration following logging was greater on 1.0-ha than 0.13-ha and 0.03-ha openings. This study demonstrates that post-logging natural regeneration in combination with advance regeneration can restock small openings in partially harvested stands where there is an adequate distribution of mineral soil seedbed and logging or site preparation coincide with or shortly precede a year of abundant seed production.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Succession-nothing in plant, community, or ecosystem ecology has been so elaborated by terminology, so much reviewed, and yet so much the center of controversy. In a general sense, every ecologist uses the concept in teaching and research, but no two ecologists seem to have a unified concept of the details of succession. The word was used by Thoreau to describe, from a naturalist's point of view, the general changes observed during the transition of an old field to a forest. As data accumulated, a lengthy taxonomy of succession developed around early twentieth century ecologists such as Cooper, Clements, and Gleason. Now, nearer the end of the century, and after much discussion concerning the nature of vegetation communities, where do ecologists stand with respect to knowledge of ecological succession? The intent of this book is not to rehash classic philosophies of succession that have emerged through the past several decades of study, but to provide a forum for ecologists to present their current research and present-day interpretation of data. To this end, we brought together a group of scientists currently studying terrestrial plant succession, who represent research experience in a broad spectrum of different ecosystem types. The results of that meeting led to this book, which presents to the reader a unique summary of contemporary research on forest succession.

Book A Variable Growth Intercept Model for Spruce in the Sub boreal Spruce and Engelmann Spruce subalpine Fir Biogeoclimatic Zones of British Columbia

Download or read book A Variable Growth Intercept Model for Spruce in the Sub boreal Spruce and Engelmann Spruce subalpine Fir Biogeoclimatic Zones of British Columbia written by Gordon Donald Nigh and published by Government of British Columbia. This book was released on 1996 with total page 30 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This paper applies the variable growth intercept modelling technique to three species of interior spruce in the sub-boreal spruce and Engelmann spruce-subalpine fir biogeoclimatic zones in British Columbia: Picea engelmannii Parry, Picea glauca (Moench) Voss, and their cross. The variable growth intercept model allows foresters to estimate spruce site index from the first 1-30 years of height growth above breast height of a stand. Results presented from the analysis of the models includes parameter estimates, their standard error, the root mean square error, the W statistic for normality, the Fk statistic for homoscedasticity, and the degree of apparent bias in the model.
