Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Why do certain easily preventable diseases persist in the modern world? Renate Lellep Fernandez sheds light on this paradox by investigating the high incidence of iodine deficiency disease (IDD) among mountain villagers in northern Spain. Just as the mystery of non-prevention leads the author far beyond the confines of a single place, so are the experiences of these villagers rich in lessons for biocultural anthropology and public health in many contexts. The symptoms of iodine deficiency include not only the disfiguring goiters associated with the disease but also a catalog of more serious and even fatal complications. The burden of caring for victims of IDD has taxed the resources of this Spanish village beyond reason. Yet even though its people were—and are—eager for good health and quick to take advantage of modern medical treatment, which has long been available, until very recently they failed to learn that iodized salt prevents the disease. A Simple Matter of Salt unveils the social and political obstacles that have impeded the successful dissemination of preventive knowledge. Here are valuable implications for the prevention of other endemic diseases on a global scale. This title is part of UC Press's Voices Revived program, which commemorates University of California Press’s mission to seek out and cultivate the brightest minds and give them voice, reach, and impact. Drawing on a backlist dating to 1893, Voices Revived makes high-quality, peer-reviewed scholarship accessible once again using print-on-demand technology. Instead of the summer she had painstakingly laid out, Julia follows Sophie back to Vermont, where Sophie is opening a bakery-and struggling with some secrets of her own. What follows is a summer of revelations-some heartwarming, some heartbreaking, and all slowly pointing Julia toward a new understanding of both herself and of the sister she never really knew.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Pharmaceutics is one of the most diverse subject areas in all of pharmaceutical science. In brief, it is concerned with the scientific and technological aspects of the design and manufacture of dosage forms or medicines. An understanding of pharmaceutics is therefore vital for all pharmacists and those pharmaceutical scientists who are involved with converting a drug or a potential drug into a medicine that can be delivered safely, effectively and conveniently to the patient. Now in its fourth edition, this best-selling textbook in pharmaceutics has been brought completely up to date to reflect the rapid advances in delivery methodologies by eye and injection, advances in drug formulations and delivery methods for special groups (such as children and the elderly), nanomedicine, and pharmacognosy. At the same time the editors have striven to maintain the accessibility of the text for students of pharmacy, preserving the balance between being a suitably pitched introductory text and a clear reflection of the state of the art. New to this edition New editor: Kevin Taylor, Professor of Clinical Pharmaceutics, School of Pharmacy, University of London. Twenty-two new contributors. Six new chapters covering parenteral and ocular delivery; design and administration of medicines for the children and elderly; the latest in plant medicines; nanotechnology and nanomedicines, and the delivery of biopharmaceuticals. Download or read book Meat written by D J A Cole and published by Elsevier. This book was released on 2013-10-22 with total page 609 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Meat provides an introductory review of the meat-eating habit in man and covers the production, preservation, composition, eating quality, human nutrition, and assessment of the future role of meat. Meat continues to be a major food commodity. Despite the high cost of production of meat animals and their lower efficiency of protein synthesis compared with that of plants and micro-organisms, meat is likely to be important in the human diet for as long as can be foreseen in the future. This book intends to emphasize the fact that the sequence of events, from the conception of meat animals to their incorporation in the human diet, is continuous. The properties of the commodity when eaten are influenced, in the nature and degree of their expression, by all the earlier components in this chain of circumstances. This text is a useful reference for students conducting research within the fields of agriculture science, biochemistry, and nutrition.

Book Essentials of Pharmaceutical Preformulation

Download or read book Essentials of Pharmaceutical Preformulation written by Simon Gaisford and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2012-10-22 with total page 234 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Essentials of Pharmaceutical Preformulation is a study guide which describes the basic principles of pharmaceutical physicochemical characterisation. Successful preformulation requires knowledge of fundamental molecular concepts (solubility, ionisation, partitioning, hygroscopicity and stability) and macroscopic properties (physical form, such as the crystalline and amorphous states, hydrates, solvates and co-crystals and powder properties), familiarity with the techniques used to measure them and appreciation of their effect on product performance, recognising that often there is a position of compromise to be reached between product stability and bioavailability. This text introduces the basic concepts and discusses their wider implication for pharmaceutical development, with reference to many case examples of current drugs and drug products. Special attention is given to the principles and best-practice of the analytical techniques that underpin preformulation (UV spectrophotometry, TLC, DSC, XRPD and HPLC). The material is presented in the typical order that would be followed when developing a medicine and maps onto the indicative pharmacy syllabus of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain Undergraduate-level pharmacy students and R&D / analytical scientists working in the pharmaceutical sector (with or without a pharmaceutical background) will find this text easy to follow with relevant pharmaceutical examples. Essential study guide for pharmacy and pharmaceutical science students Covers the pharmaceutical preformulation components of the Royal Pharmaceutical Society of Great Britain’s indicative syllabus Easy to follow text highlighted with relevant pharmaceutical examples Self-assessment assignments in a variety of formats Written by authors with both academic and industrial experience Companion website with further information to maximise learning
