Book excerpt: As the First World War roared into its second year, 17-year-old Lawrence Ellis marched into his recruitment office and signed up, eager to fight for King and Country. Underage, as so many were, it wasn’t until he had cut his teeth in the Royal Field Artillery that Ellis joined the Corps of Royal Signallers. It was some years after the war, however, that the private began to commit his memories to art and words. A Signaller’s War includes a poignant selection of Ellis’ images, portraying the conditions, experiences and hopes of the common soldier in the trenches of the Western Front. Often humorous, sometimes horrific, always honest, this collection is a unique insight into the life of a young volunteer who grows from a boy to a man during his service, after witnessing the aftermath of the Somme and action at Cambrai. He was not a trained artist, writer or diarist, yet his work demonstrates a skill and sensitivity that will leave the reader breathless.

Book excerpt: Sergeant Bernard Brookes was a signaller in World War One. He recorded his day-to-day experiences in notebooks, which he wrote up later during convalescence. He describes unsentimentally the appalling conditions in the trenches and includes the famous Christmas Truce, as well as humorous exploits during rest periods and even while under fire (including chimney-climbing and the chicken incident). After ten months in Flanders, Bernard was tasked with going 'over the top' to the captured lines to deliver an order - after two signallers had already been killed trying. Covered in mud and scrambling over dead bodies during heavy bombardment, 22-year-old Bernard achieved his mission but suffered shellshock. He was invalided out of active service and spent the rest of the War at various military hospitals, first as a patient and then as a staff member. He never regretted joining the Army. ***All profits from the sale of this book go to the Royal British Legion.***

Book A Kitchener Man s Bit An Account of the Great War 1914 18

Download or read book A Kitchener Man s Bit An Account of the Great War 1914 18 written by Gerald Dennis and published by . This book was released on 2016-12-22 with total page 244 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Long out of print, this new edition memoir by an intelligent and articulate “other rank", provides fascinating insights into the Great War infantryman's experience. In autumn 1915, twenty-year-old Gerald Dennis enlisted in Kitchener’s Army. Assigned to the 21st (Service) Battalion of the King’s Royal Rifle Corps, affectionately known as the “Yeoman Rifles”, he experienced fierce fighting on the Somme 1916, during Messines Ridge and Third Ypres in 1917 before deployment to Italy in the immediate aftermath of the Caporetto disaster. Re-assigned to a battalion of the Cameron Highlanders in summer 1918, Dennis took part in the advance to victory before demobilisation in 1919. A vivid and engaging record of wartime service and comradeship, his recollections are not those of the archetype disenchanted ex-soldier: “Whatever impressions the readers of this book draw, I would like to emphasise that I bear no resentment or bitterness. As far as I could, I have drawn a true and honest picture of my army life … I realise that I did only the merest little bit for my King and Country, not that we gave either special thought. We had volunteered for them.” M.S.L. 3.11.2015

Book excerpt: First published in 1961, this book explores the form of the comic alphabet. Whether through poems, prose or phonetics, the alphabet has become a way in which mankind has taken pleasure in playing with words and phrases. Indeed, approaches can vary significantly from the almost moronically humorous to the ingenious and genuinely witty and this book looks at the reasons how and why the comic alphabet came to possess the arguably sophisticated form in which people know it today.

Book The Boy Scouts in the Great War

Download or read book The Boy Scouts in the Great War written by Craig Armstrong and published by Pen and Sword Military. This book was released on 2021-08-26 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Boy Scouts Association was just seven years old when war broke out in 1914. With its members brought up with a strong ethos of duty and loyalty, it was no surprise that many wanted to play the best role possible in the nation’s war effort. Many members were amongst those who rallied to the colors and enlisted in the heady days of the first weeks and months of the war. Some already belonged to either the Reserves or the Territorials and so found themselves immediately thrust into the front lines and casualty rates were high. Several of those who fought were decorated for their service, with a number even wining the Victoria Cross. On the Home Front, Boy Scouts served as messengers, printers, dispatch riders etc. in the War Office and other government offices, both locally and nationally. Scouts helped gather in the harvest, hunted for spies, aided the civil and military authorities, maintained watch during air raids, helped various wartime charities and sold old bottles to raise funds for recreational huts and ambulances for the front. Others found themselves mounting guard on the coasts and on vulnerable points such as the railway network, or aiding recruitment efforts across the country. The Boy Scout became a trusted and common sight on the streets of the country and the contribution they made was great indeed.

Dave, a Lutheran missionary in New Guinea, captained his mission schooner to rescue defeated Australian soldiers from New Britain in the opening months of the war. Ray served in a motorised infantry unit before enduring a year in an isolated malarial outpost in Dutch New Guinea. Morris struggled through two amphibious landings in Japanese occupied Borneo. Alex survived kamikaze attacks and a battle with a Japanese fleet in the Philippines to witness from an Australian heavy cruiser the signing of the Japanese surrender in Tokyo Bay. Included are historical maps and photographs provided by the family.
