This book was released on 2018-09-25 with total page 178 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Giryama Vocabulary and Collections I have been requested to write a Preface to this first attempt at a Vocabulary of an East Equatorial African language. It belongs to the great Bantu family, and is the vernacular of a tribe whose habitat is just to the north of Mombasa, about 39° East longitude and 3° South latitude, and entirely within the sphere of British influence. The Rev. W. E. Taylor, m.a., already favourably known for linguistic researches, has, as an agent of the Church Missionary Society, itinerated in their midst, and made use of his oppor tunities to make this contribution to science. It consists of a Vocabulary, preceded by remarks on the language, and with an Appendix of genuine language-specimens, accom panied by translations. The articles attached to some words are very full, and many local folk-lore and tribal subjects of interest are touched upon. On the whole it is a very credit able performance, and will no doubt lead on to translations of portions of the Holy Scriptures, and of religious and educational works. Book The Book of Word Games

Download or read book The Book of Word Games written by David Parlett and published by Echo Point Books & Media. This book was released on 2012-05 with total page 260 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: If you were to imagine your ideal guide to a book of word games, who would you picture? Does an urbane, witty writer come to mind? How about a widely recognized authority and historian of games? Perhaps you'd want someone who successfully creates games himself and has written extensively on a wide variety of games? And oh what the heck let's make him British to add a bit of extra charm. Well, if that sounds like the ideal game guide, look no further. David Parlett is an internationally recognized master of games. The author of many books, including the Oxford History of Board Games and The Penguin Book of Card Games, he has also created many games including Hare & Tortoise, which has sold over 3 million copies. In "The Book of Word Games" Parlett presents a practical and entertaining guide to word games and how to play them. He offers clear and witty introductions to over 150 word games, indicating degree of difficulty, appropriate number of players, and age range (many of the games are great for the classroom or to give your kids some fun while improving their language skills). Parlett also gives a wealth of interesting etymological knowledge, including word origins, phonetic facts and interesting tidbits like the longest word in the English language. There is something for everyone, from new readers to sophisticated word connoisseurs. From well-known favorites such as Boggle and Consequences to lesser-known but equally enjoyable games such as Bacronyms and Aesop's Mission, "The Book of Word Games" presents a wide-ranging collection of word games for verbivores of all ages. Book Spanish Vocabulary

Download or read book Spanish Vocabulary written by David Brodsky and published by University of Texas Press. This book was released on 2009-04-20 with total page 655 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Unlike other vocabulary guides that require the rote memorization of literally thousands of words, this book starts from the premise that using the etymological connections between Spanish and English words—their common derivations from Latin, Greek, and other languages—is the most effective way to acquire and remember vocabulary. This approach is suitable for beginners as well as for advanced students. Teachers of the language will also find much material that can be used to help motivate their students to acquire, and retain, Spanish vocabulary. Spanish Vocabulary is divided into four parts and four annexes: Part I provides background material on the origins of Spanish and begins the process of presenting Spanish vocabulary. Part II presents "classical" Spanish vocabulary—words whose form (in both Spanish and English) is nearly unchanged from Latin and Greek. Part III deals with "popular" Spanish vocabulary, which underwent significant changes in form (and often meaning) during the evolution from Latin to Spanish. A number of linguistic patterns are identified that will help learners recognize and remember new vocabulary. Part IV treats a wide range of themes, including words of Germanic and Arabic origin, numbers, time, food and animals, the family, the body, and politics. Annex A: Principal exceptions to the "Simplified Gender Rule" Annex B: 700 words whose relations, if any, to English words are not immediately obvious Annex C: -cer verbs and related words Annex D: 4,500 additional words, either individually or in groups, with English correspondences
