Not long ago, before he had gotten hold of a gem stash, his goals had always been jobs well done and adventures well lived. Now an unrecognizable, hitherto alien possessive beast inside him, had started a persistent whisper Journalist Ursula Giger and treasure hunter Nick Horner have discovered a dangerous secret in the Burmese jungle, a secret the brutal Burmese junta's henchmen don't want revealed. Braving daunting odds and, with the help of former headhunters wreaking havoc among their depraved adversaries, will they manage to survive? Download or read book The Hidden History of Burma Race Capitalism and the Crisis of Democracy in the 21st Century written by Thant Myint-U and published by W. W. Norton & Company. This book was released on 2019-11-12 with total page 240 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A New York Times Critics' Top Book of 2019 A Foreign Affairs Best Book of 2020 “An urgent book.” —Jennifer Szalai, New York Times During a century of colonialism, Burma was plundered for its natural resources and remade as a racial hierarchy. Over decades of dictatorship, it suffered civil war, repression, and deep poverty. Today, Burma faces a mountain of challenges: crony capitalism, exploding inequality, rising ethnonationalism, extreme racial violence, climate change, multibillion dollar criminal networks, and the power of China next door. Thant Myint-U shows how the country’s past shapes its recent and almost unbelievable attempt to create a new democracy in the heart of Asia, and helps to answer the big questions: Can this multicultural country of 55 million succeed? And what does Burma’s story really tell us about the most critical issues of our time?
Download or read book A Short Stint in Tibet written by Ernst Aebi and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2005-07-29 with total page 261 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Seeking adventure, a couple, Ernst and Emilie, embark on a trek across the Himalayas, from Nepal into western Tibet. After a clandestine mountain crossing at the source of the Brahmaputra River, the two lost explorers find themselves destitute with no map and meager supplies. Suddenly, they are captured by a bedraggled patrol of outcasts from the Chinese Army. Their trip turns into a wild odyssey as they become "prisoners" of this ragtag group of wacky characters. Dripping wet and shivering, we found refuge in a shack adjoining the collection of drowning huts from which we had escaped. It turned out to be the Tibetan version of an inn, a dank room with a dirt floor, one shaky iron table and two crude benches. Rain drummed on the corrugated tin ceiling and pissed through holes which made us, as soon as we sat down, keep shifting our bench to evade the worst waterfalls and the largest puddles. The tottering keeper, a clearly inebriated old man pointed in our Tibetan phrase book at "no food" and at "no drink". "Nga amerika nay yin", Emilie said. The Tibetan phrase book promised it meant: "We are Americans." To judge from his reaction, it might as well have meant: "We found your son to be the reincarnation of the Dalai Lama."
Download or read book Myanmar s Fragmented Democracy Transition Or Illusion written by Felix Thiam Kim Tan and published by World Scientific. This book was released on 2022-07-14 with total page 295 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The recent military coup in Myanmar perpetrated by the Tatmadaw has set the country back to the days of political uncertainty and military authoritarianism. This book examines how far the country has come since its nascent attempt at democratic reforms and democratisation in 2010.Each chapter considers some of the more prominent issues that have plagued Myanmar since political reforms started. First, there have been debates about the extent to which democratic reforms have been achieved since the Constitution was formalised in 2008. Second, what has been the significance of the three elections in 2010, 2015 and 2020? Third, how has the National League for Democracy transformed in the past decade? How far has the Union Solidarity and Development Party changed the political landscape? What roles did the Tatmadaw play in the last decade? Fourth, questions surrounding how the ethnic crisis, not least the Rohingya issue, have continued to dominate the country's political landscape in the last decade, thereby overshadowing its democratisation process. Finally, how far have these efforts at democracy demonstrated Myanmar's futile attempts at appeasing the domestic and international audience? Myanmar's relations with the global and regional community vis-à-vis the US, China, and the Association of Southeast Asian Nations have also taken a toll in the last decade. There is already a shift in power politics, especially with China determining the direction of Myanmar.Myanmar has been locked in a perpetual cycle transitioning between military authoritarianism and democratisation. These prevailing issues have led to a fragmented democracy and a lost opportunity to demonstrate its foray into a genuine democracy.
