Book A Short Introduction to the Study of French Literature Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short Introduction to the Study of French Literature Classic Reprint written by Professor H. H. Johnson and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 182 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Introduction, to the Study of French Literature "Literature," say M. de Bonald, "is the expression of society." Napoleon I. could not separate literature from the life (as a whole) of peoples: their books he found "magnanimes quand le peuple est grand; vicieux, frivoles ou insenses quand il se corrompt et s'abaisse." Lamartine says of peoples: "Their memory begins with their literature." For Lemercier literature is the all-in-all, in which and from which and into which all is, comes, goes. Voltaire said: "les feuilles volantes sont la perte de la litterature." Guizot thinks that plastically and aesthetically modern letters are inferior to the old, superior as regards sentiments, profundity, and deep-set ideas. I have quoted these Frenchmen in the forefront of my Notes, as they give in their own incomparable way what we can only express as strangers, less well and, to the French, outlandishly. They have been cited, too, in their prose (original or translated). French prose, to many of us foreigners (i.e., non-French), is exquisite, nearly always. French verse generally pleases us less, often very much less. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of French Literature Instead of closing the survey, as do some books, with the decline of Romanticism, or as others, with that of Naturalism, the history of French literature has been traced down to the present day. It may be objected that living writers are too near to us to allow of an impartial and complete judgment on their works. No attempt has been made to pass any such judgment, but such an account of the French literature of today is given as may at least serve to indicate its general tendencies. Download or read book A History of French Literature written by William Albert Nitze and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-10 with total page 816 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of French Literature: From the Earliest Times to the Great War The present History of French Literature, intended both for the general reader and for students, does not aim to be exhaus tive. It is divided into three parts: Medieval, Renaissance and Modern; and within these parts it emphasizes in turn the chief literary movements and writers, leaving minor tendencies and figures out of consideration or mentioning them only inci dentally. Mere lists of names and dates, valuable as they are for reference, belong rather to bibliography than to literary his tory as such. Thus our aim has been to give a connected ao count of the main curren of French literature from the earliest times down to the present day. In this attempt we have had several further considerations to guide us. In the first place, the book is written primarily for American and English readers. The one key to literary treasures is not erudition but sympathy. Needless to say, we would instill in our readers a liking for French literature; but such sympathy will come only through an appreciation of the French, as distinguished from the anglo-saxon, point of view. Hence the introductory chapter on the Spirit of French Letters and, in the body of the book, the frequent references to What appear to be dominant French traits. Another result of this method is the attention we give to the historical and social background. Whether we have succeeded or not, we have consistently tried to depict for each age the historical and social elements that produced it; brie y of course, with the ex pectation that the reader will complete the outline by reference to works dealing directly with these subjects. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of French Literature French prose and French poetry had interested me during so many years that when Mr. Gosse invited me to write this book I knew that I was qualified in one particular - the love of my subject. Qualified in know ledge I was not, and could not be. NO one can pretend to know the whole Of a vast literature. He may have opened many books and turned many pages he cannot have penetrated to the soul of all books from the Song of Roland to Toute [a Lyre. Without reaching its spirit, to read a book is little more than to amuse the eye with printed type. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of French Literature, Vol. 1: From Its Origin to the Renaissance This latter thought leads us to a consideration which has more to do with geography than with history; or at least with geography as one description and subdivision of history. But we suppose that it is altogether unnecessary to dwell upon the importance of connecting every author and every literary production with the country in which he or it has been produced. To read the work of a German as we should read the work of an Italian, ignoring the features in each which are attributable to the sky beneath which they were born, and the scenery amidst which their ideas have taken shape, would be to read with closed eyes, and a mind wilfully insensible to one of the greatest allurements of literature. Download or read book The History of French Literature written by Annie Lemp Konta and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-17 with total page 582 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of French Literature: From the Oath of Strasburg to Chanticler During several centuries these national and religious poems were orally transmitted from generation to generation until Charlemagne became the principal hero, his legend absorbing all others, and in the tenth century was born the chanson de gate of truly French character. A number of these chansons de geste were inspired by the oral traditions circulating during the Merovingian period, others were ih spired by the old Cantilenes. Our chansons de geste, there fore, says Leon Gautier, are military and not clerical, and owe nothing to certain Latin chronicles from which it is believed by some they have arisen. He tells us that the Chromque do Turpin is posterior to the first chansons de giants. The Chronique do Turpin and most of the analogous legends are the works of some rhetorician of the monasteries who copied without intelligence and without animation our first chansons de geste. F. Scholle, also asserts that the poems had for a long time been preserved by oral tradition before having been written, and that the various readings of the diflerent compilations are due partly to the intervention of the jongleurs and not solely to the copyists. Book Literature Through Art

Download or read book Literature Through Art written by Helmut Hatzfeld and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-05-18 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Literature Through Art: A New Approach to French Literature To the literary historian, a history of French literature in which art is used as the key to a better and deeper understanding of literature will be of primary concern. The art historian, on the other hand, will take the 0p posite view wishing to see art elucidated by other forms of expression. To us the paramount problem is the comparative analysis and appreciation of texts and pictures in their details. For this purpose the historian must also be a philologist and a critic, i.e. One who can analyze both texts and pictures with correctness and taste. Therefore philologist and critic must be under stood here in a double sense; first, factually, in regard to interpretation and iconography and second, formally, in regard to stylistics and formal de scription. From a methodological point of view, philology is involved in yet an other sense. It is gratifying to see that the text-bound analytical, and stylistic method in literary history as used here, and as Opposed to the traditionally vague, synthetic, and persuasive method, finds even on the non-compara tive level enthusiastic support from the analysts of literary style. It is they who have called for a change in the way of literary history. The method of explication de textes has been used for some years for historical purposes in the sense that the new literary history in the making is considered to be composed of single layers of interpreted texts as encountered in successive epochs. It is this method that is used here on a comparative basis, the ex plications de textes having been supplemented by the explications de tableaux. Book A Short History of French Literature

Download or read book A Short History of French Literature written by Sarah Kay and published by . This book was released on 2003 with total page 357 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book traces the history of French literature from its beginnings to the present. Within its remarkably brief compass, it offers a wide-ranging, personal, and detailed--though selective--account of major writers and movements. Developments in French literature are presented in an innovative way, not as an even sequence of literary events but as a series of stories told at varying pace and with different kinds of focus. Readers can thus take in the broad sweep of historical change, grasp the main characteristics of major periods, or enjoy a close appraisal of individual works and their contexts. The book is written in an accessible and non-technical style that will make it attractive both to students of French and to non-specialist readers.
