Book A Short History of the Westminster Assembly Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of the Westminster Assembly Classic Reprint written by William Beveridge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-07-13 with total page 198 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of the Westminster Assembly This little work is nothing more than what it professes to be, a short history of the Westminster Assembly. It is hoped that the work will be found a fair and accurate statement of the historical facts associated with the Assembly. The author has done his best to work over for himself and with his own eyes the materials on which the history is based. These materials are abundant, and it is only too probable that much has escaped his notice and research. The Westminster Assembly was an epoch in the creed forming age in which it met, and the results of its deliberations have been far-reaching. Recent events in Scotland, notably the decision of the House of Lords on August lst, 1904, in the Free Church of Scotland Appeals Case, have given a fresh interest to the Assembly and its work, more especially the Confession of Faith. Attention may, therefore, be directed to two Notes appended to Chapter IX. These Notes have arisen directly out of the judgment of the House of Lords, and contain matter which may be of some interest to students of the Assembly. Book The Place of the Westminster Assembly in Modern History Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Place of the Westminster Assembly in Modern History Classic Reprint written by John De Witt and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-02 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Place of the Westminster Assembly in Modern History In the modern world, this great idea began its mission in the Pro testant Reformation. But the Protestant Reformation at the begin ning did not give to it the place it soon afterwards assumed. The sovereignty of God in the history and destiny of every soul was the belief of Luther, as centuries before it had been the belief of St. Augustine. It was not, however, until the Institutes of the Chris tian Religion were written by John Calvin, that the great truth of the sovereignty of God was formulated and correlated to the other doctrines of Christianity in precisely the mode in which it became the great historical force it afterward proved to be in the spheres of religion and politics. For Luther followed St. Augustine, and there 1s an important dis tinction to be made between the place which predestination holds in the doc'trinal system of Augustine, and the place which the eter nal purpose holds in the doctrinal system of Calvin. The profound experience of sin and grace of the North African father brought him to the conviction that God alone is the author of man's salva tion, for man is unable not only to effect it, but to begin the new creation, from death to life. And therefore the one ultimate explanation of the fact that regeneration is not universal is for him to be found in the sovereign and absolute predestination of God. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Westminster Assembly Its History: And Standards Being the Baird Lecture When appointed Baird Lecturer for 1882, the Author chose as the subject of his Lectures, 'Epochs in the History of the Reformed Church of Scotland.' But the state of his health during 1881, and his desire to complete without delay his researches on the Westminster Assembly - a subject which had engaged his attention for some years, and on which he had previously given lectures on both sides of the Atlantic - led him to ask that he might be allowed to substitute that subject for the one first chosen, and to write additional lectures on it. To this the Trustees most kindly consented, and seven additional lectures were prepared, which with those previously written make up the present volume. His best thanks arc due to the Trustees, as well for the indulgence they have shown him as for the kind aid they have promised to help forward the publication of the remainder of the Minutes of the Westminster Assembly. This book was released on 2016-08-20 with total page 358 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Addresses at the Celebration of the Two Hundred and Fiftieth Anniversary of the Westminster Assembly: By the General Assembly of the Presbyterian Church in the U. S. A Standards concisely stated is as follows: The Confession of Faith was reported to the English Parliament Decem ber 4, 1646, was returned with the proof-texts to Parlia ment on April 29, 1647, and adopted June 3, 1648. The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland adopted the Confession August 27, 1647, and it was approved by the Parliament of the kingdom of Scotland, February 7, 1649. The Larger and Shorter Catechisms were reported by the Westminster Assembly to the English Parliament October, 1647, and were adopted September 15, 1648. The General Assembly of the Church of Scotland adopted both Catechisms July 20, 1648, and the Parliament of the kingdom of Scotland February 7, 1649. In view of the varying dates of adoption, and of the fact that Church and State in both England and Scotland were united at the time of the formulation of the Westminster Standards, it is believed that the year 1898 is the most appropriate year for the observance of the Anniversary. The Committee therefore recommend the adoption of the following resolutions. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
