Download or read book A World of Water written by P. Boomgaard and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2007-01-01 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Water, in its many guises, has always played a powerful role in shaping Southeast Asian histories, cultures, societies and economies. This volume, the rewritten results of an international workshop, with participants from eight countries, contains thirteen essays, representing a broad range of approaches to the study of Southeast Asia with water as the central theme. As it was exposed to the sea, the region was more accessible to outside political, economic and cultural influences than many landlocked areas. Easy access through sea routes also stimulated trade from an early age. However, the same easy access made Southeast Asia vulnerable to political control by strong outsiders. The sea is, moreover, a source of food, but also of many hazards. At the same time, Southeast Asian societies and cultures are confronted with and permeated by 'water from heaven' in the form of rain, flash floods, irrigation water, water in rivers, brooks and swaps, water-driven power plants, and pumped or piped water, in addition to water as a carrier of sewage and pollution. Finally, the volume deals with the role of water in classification systems, beliefs, myths, illness and healing.

Book From Hippocrates to COVID 19

Download or read book From Hippocrates to COVID 19 written by Dale A. Stirling and published by CRC Press. This book was released on 2023-05-12 with total page 589 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The COVID-19 pandemic provides stark evidence of the importance of medicine on a global scale. However, revisiting the influenza pandemic of 1918 provided a perspective as we searched for a viable vaccine and instituted public health measures. This shows that medical knowledge is an accumulative process extending to the past and it is in the spirit of that legacy that this bibliography has been compiled. The book is a one-stop resource that cites literature related to the historical aspects of medicine. It also acknowledges medicine’s global reach and devotes significant effort in that respect. Although the online world seems to dominate on both a social and educational level, there is still a need for thoughtfully curated and focused reference works and this bibliography accomplishes that goal. The book has 9,000+ citations. It utilizes the WHO's International classification of Diseases for the section on diseases and disorders and the U.S. Food & Drug Administration's Product Code Classification Database for the section on medical devices, equipment, and instruments. It includes detailed subject, geographuc, and people indexes for an easy reference.

By providing easy access to material often scattered in books, monographs, and periodicals addressed to different audiences, this volume performs a major service for students and scholars involved in cross-cultural or Chinese studies. The volume begins with an introductory chapter that presents quantitative data on publication trends and offers a qualitative evaluation of the literature. The studies that follow are divided into 13 chapters largely based on the American Psychological Association content classifications. Within chapters citations are arranged alphabetically by author. Items from non-English sources have been translated into English, while many English abstracts of Chinese publications were extensively edited or rewritten. In addition, an introduction and introductory notes to each chapter place the citations in context. As author index and an extensive subject index provide cross-referencing and aid in literature searches. An invaluable acquisition for any library with a Chinese studies or psychology collection, this volume will both introduce readers to the Chinese psychological literature and facilitate their access to this important body of work.

Book Connecting South South Communities

Download or read book Connecting South South Communities written by Muhammed Haron and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2019-01-03 with total page 398 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In addition to offering a comprehensive overview and fair insight over more than twenty five years into the relations between two South Middle Powers, namely South Africa and Malaysia, this book also discusses them within their respective regional structures and evaluates their respective diplomatic and commercial connections. It also explores issues that have generally be neglected by International Relations specialists and, in this regard, it gives attention to cultural contacts that bring to the fore the critical role of non-state actors in international affairs. Since the ideas espoused by South Africa and Malaysia’s political leaders are rooted in their specific national and broad regional philosophies, the study also unpacks the notions of the ’African ways’ vis-à-vis the ‘Asian ways’ in maintaining and sustaining state-to-state relations within the two regions. This book, which uses Critical Theory as an appropriate framework that takes full cognisance of various developments in International Relations, will be of interest to scholars and researchers in both the Social Sciences and the Humanities.

Download or read book Social Problems written by Sara Towe Horsfall and published by Routledge. This book was released on 2018-05-30 with total page 323 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book represents a truly innovative and empowering approach to social problems. Instead of focusing solely on a seemingly tireless list of major problems, Sara Towe Horsfall considers how select key issues can be solved and pays particular attention to the advocate groups already on the front lines. Horsfall first provides a robust theoretical foundation to the study of social problems before moving on to the problems themselves, examining each through the lens of specific advocate groups working towards solutions. This concise and accessible text also incorporates useful learning tools including study questions to help reinforce reading comprehension, questions for further thought to encourage critical thinking and classroom discussion, a glossary of key terms, and a worksheet for researching advocate groups. Social Problems: An Advocate Group Approach is an essential resource for social problems courses and for anyone who is inspired to effect change.
