Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Russia, for Public, Elementary, and Urban, Schools, and for Junior Classes of Middle Educational Institutions MY reasons for offering an addition to the histories of Russia already published are these. This history is written by a Russian Professor of History, and therefore may be expected to show the events and movements which in the opinion of Russians themselves have been most important in the expansion, development, or retardation of progress, of the country, and in bringing Russia to be what she is to-day. We can only understand what Russia is at the present, or what she may be in the future, by understanding what she was in the past. It is brief, giving an outline which may be filled up from the numerous volumes dealing with special periods or subjects - the reign of Ivan IV. Or Peter I commerce, government, religion, or land, relations with England or the Far East, and so on; many of the existing histories are either so long that one cannot see the wood for the trees, or so compressed that it is difficult to take in all their closely packed information. Further, it gives. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Young Folks History of Russia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Young Folks History of Russia Classic Reprint written by Nathan Haskell Dole and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-10 with total page 536 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Young Folks' History of Russia It has been well said by a recent author that the aim of all the great reforms made in Russia since Peter the Great has been to undo what he did or tried to do. That struggle is still going on, and with Such throes that it sometimes seems as though the building itself must fall in ruins. The history of modern Russia is the history of a transition, and must needs be unfinished until the transition is complete. The death of an emperor or the execution of an assassin is not the end of an epoch. In a book for young people a long list of authorities may be spared; it is sufficient to state that the facts have been drawn from the best sources, - Russian, German, French, and English. In the first part Russian names have been done away with English equivalents take their places. A table follows for convenience. In all cases difficult words are avoided so far as possible, and it is hoped that this Young Folks' History of Russia is at least readable. Book The Story of Russia Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Story of Russia Classic Reprint written by Robert van Bergen and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-10-01 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Russia Other large rivers rise on the Valdai plateau. The Dnieper runs south, passing by Kief, and empties in the Black Sea, near Odessa. The Dwina runs northward, seeking the icy Arctic, which it enters by way of the \vhite Sea near Archangel. The Diina takes a westerlv course towards the Gulf of Riga where it empties near the city of that name. Of greater importance are the small streams which feed Lakes Ladoga and Onega, because they connect Central Russia with the Baltic Sea by means of the Neva. European Russia is usually divided into four zones or belts, from the character of the soil and the nature of its productions; their general direction is from south west to northeast. In the north, as a Screen against the Arctic blast, is the policssa or forest region, densely covered with lindens, birches, larches, and sycamores, with oaks on the southern fringe. These forests are invaluable to Russia where, in the absence of mountains, stone is scarce. The houses are built of wood, and fires are of common occurrence. Both lumber and fuel are supplied by these forests which originally extended to Novgorod, Moscow, and Jaroslaf. The increase in population together with the growing demand for lumber, have caused extensive clearings; but the area covered by the forests is so large, that the supply is well-nigh inexhaustible. Book excerpt: If this book seems to have departed from the proper ideal of historic narrative--if it is the history of a Power, and not of a _People_--it is because the Russian people have had no history yet. There has been no evolution of a Russian nation, but only of a vast governing system; and the words "Russian Empire" stand for a majestic world-power in which the mass of its people have no part.
