Download or read book A Short History of Russian Literature Classic Reprint written by Serge Tomkeyeff and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-23 with total page 188 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Russian Literature The period of the greatest activity of the two brothers was during their residence in Moravia. The Moravian princes, seeing that the people were unable to apprehend even the elementary truths of Christianity, addressed them selves to the Byzantine Emperor Michael; who selected Cyril for the purpose. The success of the Slavonic mission in Moravia, aroused and alarmed the German Hierarchy which, dreading the loss of its influence on the Moravians impugned these first missioners before Pope Nicholas I. The Pope summoned the brothers to Rome for trial, but it was his successor Adrian II who heard them, and so far from letting them be tried, made Methodius a Bishop and sent him to Moravia where he lived for sixteen years more. Cyril, worn out with toil, died at Rome. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Year in Russia His book is nothing else but a collection of notes, a bundle of impressions gathered during a year's stay in Russia. It lays no claim to be either exhaustive or even of any practical use to the serious student of the Russian Evolution. It is written for the ignorant, and with the object of helping them to decide whether they wish to take an interest in what is now happening in Russia, or not. I cannot take them into the house and show them all over it from floor to ceiling with the knowledge and authority of a master-builder all I can do is to open a small window and ask them to look through it and observe certain things, pointing out how far these things are typical of the whole and my hope is that the glimpses I have given them will enable them to decide whether they wish to go and knock at the front door and investigate for themselves. Ephimenko and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-14 with total page 194 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Russia, for Public, Elementary, and Urban, Schools, and for Junior Classes of Middle Educational Institutions MY reasons for offering an addition to the histories of Russia already published are these. This history is written by a Russian Professor of History, and therefore may be expected to show the events and movements which in the opinion of Russians themselves have been most important in the expansion, development, or retardation of progress, of the country, and in bringing Russia to be what she is to-day. We can only understand what Russia is at the present, or what she may be in the future, by understanding what she was in the past. It is brief, giving an outline which may be filled up from the numerous volumes dealing with special periods or subjects - the reign of Ivan IV. Or Peter I commerce, government, religion, or land, relations with England or the Far East, and so on; many of the existing histories are either so long that one cannot see the wood for the trees, or so compressed that it is difficult to take in all their closely packed information. Book A Thousand Years of Russian History Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Thousand Years of Russian History Classic Reprint written by Sonia E. Howe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-18 with total page 478 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Thousand Years of Russian History There are few people in England, probably, who have not read some book or article on Russia, and some aspects of the life of that country are well known to English people; yet it is not too much to say that great ignorance prevails about Russia as a whole. The thing lacking is a knowledge of history, for history alone explains the present by the past, and offers the right vantage ground from which to view the great drama in action at this time. History alone will explain, for example, why Russia is so irresistibly drawn towards Constantinople, and why so much blood has been shed in vain attempts to gain possession of the latchkey to her own front door which the Western Powers have prevented her again and again from getting into her hands. The ancient story of Oleg the Wise hanging his shield on the gate of Byzantium in 911 is a symbol of Russia's policy. A knowledge of, history will also enable the reader to understand the living bond which exists between Russians and Balkan Slavs, who are all members of the same race and of the same Church, and how this bond has always reasserted itself when the weaker brothers had reason to call upon the stronger for help against Turkish Moslems. There are also other vital points which have to be ex plained before Russia's political position can be rightly understood; for the mighty Russian Empire has not been built in a day - from a small beginning and by a number of different processes it has grown to its present dimensions. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Story of Russia So you see that by looking carefully at the place he lived in, She learned a great deal about him without once seeing him. That is just what I want you to do about the Russians. Before we look at them, we will look at their house, Russia, and see what that tells us. It is a very large house as large as all the rest of Europe put together. There is plenty of room for a large nation; even room enough, one would think, for several nations at once. Why Should not one nation go and settle down by itself in one corner, and others in other corners, and never know or care anything about each other? For two reasons. Perhaps you live in a house in a row. If you do, it is also likely that you do not know your next-door neighbour. Yet there is only a wall between you. Why do not you meet? Because you each have all you want on your own side of the wall; all the food you want, and the books you want. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Outline of the History of Russia, Vol. 2 of 2 As far as clerical affairs were concerned, Nikon's most important act was the correction of books used in church service. During the course of time, many mistakes had gradually appeared in church manuscripts, from the ignorance of scribes and Copyists. When the art of printing became known in Moscow, these mistakes were of course repeated in printed books. Not only so; along with mistakes, various statements were made, not in accordance with the statutes of the russo-greek church. Book Free Russia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Free Russia Classic Reprint written by William Hepworth Dixon and published by . This book was released on 2016-06-14 with total page 368 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Free Russia Svobodnaya Rossia - Free Russia-is a word on every lip in that great country; at once the Name and Hope of the new empire born of the Crimean war. In past times Russia was free, even as Germany and France were free. She fell before Asiatic hordes; and the Tartar system lasted, in spirit, if not in form, until the war; but since that conflict ended, the old Russia has been born again. This new country - hoping to be pacific, meaning to be Free - is what I have tried to paint. My journeys, just completed, carried me from the Polar Sea to the Ural Mountains, from the mouth of the Vistula to the Straits of Yeni Kale, including visits to the four holy shrines of Solovetsk, Pechersk, St. George, and Troitsa. My object being to paint the Living People, I have much to say about pilgrims, monks, and parish priests; about village justice, and patriarchal life; about beggars, tramps, and sectaries; about Kozaks, Kalmuks, and Kirghiz; about workmen's artels, burgher rights, and the division of land; about students' revolts and soldiers' grievances; in short, about the Human Forces which underlie and shape the external politics of our time. Two journeys made in previous years have helped me to judge the reforms which are opening out the Japan-like empire of Nicolas into the Free Russia of the reigning prince. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Dawn in Russia: Or Scenes in the Russian Revolution I have not attempted in this book to do more than describe some of the scenes which I witnessed in Russia during the winter of I905 - Igo6, while I was acting there as special correspondent for the Daily Cbrouicle. For the most part, the descriptions are given in the same words which I wrote down at the time, either for my own memory or for the news paper. But the whole has been re-arranged and rewritten, while certain scenes have been added for which a daily paper has no room. I have also inserted between the scenes a bare outline of the principal events that were happening elsewhere, so that the Significance of what I saw may be more easily understood, and the dates become something better than mere numbers.
