Book excerpt: Books VI-X of Livy's monumental work trace Rome's fortunes from its near collapse after defeat by the Gauls in 386 bc to its emergence, in a matter of decades, as the premier power in Italy, having conquered the city-state of Samnium in 293 bc. In this fascinating history, events are described not simply in terms of partisan politics, but through colourful portraits that bring the strengths, weaknesses and motives of leading figures such as the noble statesman Camillus and the corrupt Manlius vividly to life. While Rome's greatest chronicler intended his history to be a memorial to former glory, he also had more didactic aims - hoping that readers of his account could learn from the past ills and virtues of the city.

Download or read book The History of Rome Vol 1 of 2 written by Oliver Goldsmith and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 468 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The History of Rome, Vol. 1 of 2: From the Foundation of the City of Rome, to the Destruction of the Western Empire There are some subjects on which a writer must decline all attempts to acquire fame, satis fied with being obscurely useful. After such a number of Roman Histories, in all languages, ancient and modern, it would be but imposture to pretend new discoveries, or to expect to offer any thing in a work of this kind, which has not been often anticipated by others. The facts which it relates have'been a hundred times repeated, and every occurrence has been so variously considered, that learning can scarce find a new anecdote, or genius give novelty to the old. Book A History of Rome for Junior Classes

Download or read book A History of Rome for Junior Classes written by Leonhard Schmitz and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-08 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Rome for Junior Classes: With a Map of Italy and Ample Chronological Table The history of Rome differs from that of most other nations, inasmuch as it is the history of a single city, which, at first small and insignificant, gradually extended its dominion and imposed its laws not only upon Italy, but upon nearly the whole of the ancient world. The city of Rome throughout the whole period of Roman history was the heart and centre of the Empire; and a more gigantic system of power centred in a single city, the world has never seen. As she extended her conquests, she at first also extended her constitution, though in a modified form, to the conquered peoples who were ad mitted to her franchise but this plan was soon given up, and the conquered nations were reduced one after another to the condition of subjects, having to bear all the burdens of the state, without enjoying the privileges of citizens. Such a system was fraught with very many dangers, and ultimately led to terrible wars by which the city was forced in the end to concede the rights of citizenship to the whole of Italy. Rome was originally one of a number of small towns in Latium, a district on the west coast of Central Italy. Book A Short History of Italy 476 1900 Classic Reprint

This book was released on 2018-03-02 with total page 464 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Italy (476-1900) This volume is a mere sketch in outline; it makes no pretence to original investigation, or even to an extended examination of the voluminous literature which deals with every part of its subject. It is an attempt to give a correct impression of Italian history as a whole, and employs details only here and there, and then merely for the sake of giving greater clearness to the general outline. So brief a narrative is mainly a work of selection; and perhaps no two persons would agree upon what to put in and what to leave out. I have laid emphasis upon the matters of greatest general interest, the Papacy, the Renaissance, and the Risorgimento; and my special object has been to put in high relief those achieve ments which make Italy so charming and so interest ing to the world, and to give what space was possible. Book The Sancta Respublica Romana

Download or read book The Sancta Respublica Romana written by Richard Heber Wrightson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 298 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Sancta Respublica Romana: A Handbook to the History of Rome Italy, From the Division HE materials for the composition of this little book were collected and arranged from con temporary authorities, and such ancient records as have come down to us, some years ago; when, during a residence in Italy, I had felt the want of such information as it is intended to furnish. Since those days increased attention has been directed to mediaeval history; and especially to that of Rome and Italy. The subject has been taken up by writers whose researches have thrown new light on the subject, and made it most attractive. Yet the study of complicated and necessarily volu minous details can only be carried out by those who have leisure hours at their disposal. Under these circumstances, I hope to be acquitted of presumption if I endeavour to supply a want which still exists - That of a continuous account of the changes and calamities which befell the ancient centre of Roman power during five eventful centuries - From the division of the Roman world between the sons of Theodosius to the breaking-up of Charlemagne's empire of the West. I have been at pains to do this as briefly as possible. Yet not with such brevity as would render the narrative obscure and devoid of interest. Book The Growth of Rome Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Growth of Rome Classic Reprint written by P. E. Matheson and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Growth of Rome Our knowledge of the earlier history of Rome is unfortunately based on very inadequate evidence. It is not until the second century b.c. That we have in Polybius, the Greek statesman and exile, a historian writing on contemporary events further back we are dependent on secondhand historians, such as Livy, and on what we can derive from such documents as the list of consuls, the remains of the legal document known as the XII Tables, and such inferences as may be drawn from the evidence of language, from later institutions, civil and religious, and from the discoveries of the archaeologist in Rome and Italy. But the main outlines of the early history are fairly clear. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book Roman Cities in Italy and Dalmatia Classic Reprint

Download or read book Roman Cities in Italy and Dalmatia Classic Reprint written by A. L. Frothingham and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-02 with total page 482 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Written by Arthur Lincoln Frothingham - archaeologist and professor of art history at Princeton University, this compendium of Roman history stands out as a wonderful addition to any historian's collection. Frothingham's exploration of Roman history will intrigue and entice seriously minded scholars. Utilizing his own observations of the smaller cities of the Romanized Dalmatian coast and ancient Italy, Frothingham's book stands out as being a keenly perceived analysis of Roman history. One of the strengths of Roman Cities in Italy and Dalmatia is its ability to explore lesser known cities and introduce the reader to them in a scholarly way. When exploring cities such as Praeneste, Norba, Circeii, Terracina, Falerii, Turin, Verona and Aosta, Frothingham brings new information to anticipating readers. In addition to the information this book brings, many photos are provided. The primary argument posed by this book is that to understand Roman history as a whole, one must understand both the large cities and the small ones too. Frothingham defends this argument by showing the importance of the smaller cities he investigates throughout the book. For the individual interested in Roman history and for one who cannot travel to Rome to explore these places first hand, Roman Cities in Italy and Dalmatia is invaluable. For those that have the ability and desire to travel to Rome, reading Frothingham's book in advance will help increase both your knowledge in the area and your knowledge of Roman history as a whole. What the book may lack in unity, it makes up for by its depth and breadth when considering both the individual examinations Frothingham puts forth and the overarching conclusions he reaches.
