Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Greek Philosophy From the Earliest Period to the Time of Socrates, Vol. 1: With a General Introduction That this part, containing the General Introduction to the entire subject and the his tory of the earliest philosophers, should appear after others dealing with the later periods, is in some mea sure to be regretted, because Greek Philosophy is best treated as a whole, and gains immensely by being studied in the order of development; yet those who are acquainted with the previously translated portions of Dr. Zeller's work will be the more ready to welcome the introductory volume, without which, indeed, many things in the later philosophy, and in Dr. Zeller's treat ment of it, would have remained comparatively obscure. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of Greek Philosophy The main purpose which I have had in view in writing this book has been to present an account of Greek philosophy which, within strict limits of brevity, shall be at once authentic and interesting - authentic, as being based on the original works themselves, and not on any secondary sources; interesting, as presenting to the ordinary English reader, in language freed as far as possible from technicality and abstruseness, the great thoughts of the greatest men of antiquity on questions of permanent significance and value. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History of Greek Philosophy: Thales to Democritus In the present volume I have tried to meet this want so far as the early Greek philosophers are concerned, and to get under way with a simple, painless, and, I hope, not unentertaining history Of Greek Philosophy as a whole. I am encouraged to this attempt by my own feeling that philosophy is not really the impossibly abstract, abstruse, cold, and difficult thing of the popular imagination, but rather something essentially warm, close, nay, clinging to everyday life, highly colored, melodramatic, and naturally provocative and engrossing. And with this feeling goes the Opinion that its history is the story Of perhaps the most exciting and sensational pursuit with which the human mind has diverted as well as ennobled itself. If I shall have succeeded in insinuating that philosophy is not so dull and respectable after all, and in troubling the reader, however vaguely, with something of its fascination, I shall feel that I have done what - apart from amusing myself - I set out to do. Book Ancient European Philosophy

Download or read book Ancient European Philosophy written by Denton J. Snider and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-21 with total page 742 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Ancient European Philosophy: The History of Greek Philosophy Psychologically Treated In these days not a few European writers on Philosophy have proclaimed the demise and dis appearance of the science to which they have devoted their powers. Philosophy, then, has run its course but what new discipline is to take its place? Such is the coming problem. Other writers have been willing to grant to Philosophy a fresh lease Of life, if it can only be brought to mend its ways. And the way often recom mended to it is that of Natural Science, or the purely experimental method. Such a solution, however, though it has been offered by meta physicians as well as by scientists, could only end in the abolition or at least the enslavement of Philosophy as conceived by its greatest mas ters. An outcome of this sort seems not alto gether satisfactory, and so the solvent word remains unspoken. On the other hand, there are men who are still constructing or re-constructing systems of Philosophy, wrought after the Old pattern with new additions here and there, and spiced usually with sharp criticisms on all other systems. Of such Germany has been and still is the prolific home. In the first half of the past century, Philosophy-building became the chief occupa tion of the highest order of German intellect, with wonderful results; in the second half it was still kept up, though the output was less in quantity, and far inferior in originality. The result, however, can hardly be denied: ancient Greece and modern Germany Show the two highest points in the development of Philosophy. But is this all of it? What is to be its future? In its antique and in its modern periods it seems to lie before us rounded out and complete. IS it again to be an epoch-making utterance Of human spirit? Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Greek Thinkers, Vol. 3: A History of Ancient Philosophy It is true that the difficulties of thought to which we have alluded were not removed by the new teaching, but only clothed in a different garb. They reappeared in the form of questions such as - How are the fleeting individual things connected with their eternal archetypes? Do they participate in them, or are they copied from them? And what is the precise nature of this participation or process of copying? To these questions Plato never succeeded in returning a satisfactory answer; but, as Aristotle remarks in the above-quoted passage, he left them to be investigated by others. But this is not the place to discuss the consequences of a doctrine whose origin we have not yet completely accounted for. We must once more draw the reader's attention to a fundamental tendency of the human mind, and to its far-reaching effects. Abstractions are clothed by language in the same dress as objects of perception. Both are designated by substantives, and perhaps could not be designated in any other way. In the untrained mind, the Real and the Thing are so closely associated, that in ordinary language the two terms are synonymous. The very word real is derived from res, a thing. Forces, qualities, states, relations, are regarded as entities having the nature of things, and, when they produce lasting impressions upon the mind, as living beings endowed with will - as gods and daemons. After the mythological comes an ontological stage, a naive realism (in the mediaeval sense. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Short History of Greek Philosophy

Download or read book A Short History of Greek Philosophy written by John Marshall and published by Independently Published. This book was released on 2020-03-07 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Aristippus was a native of Cyrene, a Greek colony on the north coast of Africa. He is said to have come to Athens because of his desire to hear Socrates; but from the notices of him which we find in Xenophon's memoirs he appears to have been from the first a somewhat intractable follower, dissenting especially from the poverty and self-denial of the master's mode of life. He in course of time founded a school of his own, called the Cyrenaic from his own place of birth, and from the fact that many subsequent leaders of the school also belonged to Cyrene. Among his notable disciples were his daughter Arete, her son named Aristippus after his grandfather, Ptolemaeus the Aethiopian, Antipater of Cyrene, and a long succession of others.
