Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of British Agriculture With the possession Of flocks, and herds the tribesmen lost some Of their freedom. The loss was not serious if they kept only cattle and horses; it was when they added Sheep and pigs that their possessions imposed restrictions on their movements. From the earliest times the different tribes fought each other for possession of the best hunting grounds, and when they began to rear herds and flocks they fought still more. While they con tinned to hunt, they found that they gained far more when they came on the camp of another tribe, killed or scattered its members and added their cattle and Sheep to their own. There was no security for what belonged to a tribe, if a more powerful neighbour fell on it. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book English Farming

Download or read book English Farming written by Rowland E. Prothero and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-09-12 with total page 530 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from English Farming: Past and Present English Farming Past and Present is based on an article which appeared in the Quarterly Review for 1885. The article was subsequently expanded into a book, published in 1888 by Messrs. Longman under the title of The Pioneers and Progress of English Farming. The book has been out of print for twenty years. Written with the confidence of comparative youth and inexperience, it expressed as certainties many opinions which might now be modified, if not withdrawn. But its motives were two convictions, which time has rather strengthened than weakened. One was, that the small number of persons who owned agricultural land might some day make England the forcing-bed of schemes for land-nationalisation, which countries, where the ownership of the soil rested on a more democratic basis, repudiated as destructive of all forms of private property. The other was, that a considerable increase in the number of peasant ownerships, in suitable hands, on suitable land, and in suitable localities, was socially, economically, and agriculturally advantageous. Book A History of Agriculture and Prices in England Vol 1

This book was released on 2018-02-07 with total page 730 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Agriculture and Prices in England, Vol. 1: From the Year After the Oxford Parliament (1259) To the Commencement of the Continental War (1793), Compiled Entirely From Original and Contemporaneous Records I anticipate that the facts and comments contained in these volumes will attract but few readers. The form of such a work is necessarily repulsive, and the dry details of business transacted many centuries ago will have but little charm for the general public. But there is nevertheless contained in these relics no small portion of the bygone life of the English people, perhaps even some materials which may aid in constructing a philosophy of history, by giving depth and solidity to the political events which have been narrated by our annalists. Book Agriculture and the Land Classic Reprint

Download or read book Agriculture and the Land Classic Reprint written by George Fredrick Bosworth and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-09 with total page 110 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture and the Land His book on Agriculture and the Land gives an out line of the progress and developments of one of the oldest of human arts, more especially so far as our own country is concerned. It is necessary that our school children should know something of the effect of climate on agriculture, of the character of the soil in different localities, and of its suitability for the growth of par ticular crops, and for the rearing of cattle, sheep, horses, and pigs. These fundamentals of British agriculture are considered in the first part of the book, and then chapters are devoted to Small Holdings and Allotments, to Housing and Town-planning, and to the importance of thrift in connexion with Building Societies and Co-operative Societies. In the later chap ters will be found, among other subjects, some account of the Sources and Distribution of our Water Supply, and the various modes of Internal Communication. Teachers and students who wish to study Industrial and Commercial History in greater detail are advised to use Dr Cunningham's Growth of English Industry and Commerce. There they will find full and accurate references to a large number of authorities on all branches of this subject. Download or read book A History of Agriculture and Prices in England Vol 7 written by James E Thorold Rogers and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-11-02 with total page 656 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A History of Agriculture and Prices in England, Vol. 7: From the Year After the Oxford Parliament, 1259, to the Commencement of the Continental War, 1793; Compiled Entirely From Original and Contemporaneous Records; Part I, 1708-1793 AS it has been decided to bring the Histom (y Agriculture and Prices to an end with the seventh volume, which is now laid before the public, some apology for the incomplete condition of the work is necessary, as well as an explanation of the great delay which has occurred in printing these pages. The fifth and sixth volumes were published in 1887, and during the last three years of his life my father was busily en gaged in collecting material for the concluding part of his book. A large number of figures had been brought together, and even tabulated, when he was seized with the illness that ultimately proved fatal to him. But the series was incomplete, and though prices had been collected for several articles for every year in the period he had set himself to deal with, many subjects were but poorly represented. Among the papers that were left, no clue was found to the existence of any other figures, or to the sources from which he had proposed to draw further information. My father invariably worked alone, with out assistance or delegation, and there was no one therefore who was in a position to offer any valuable opinion on the intended scope of the work. When therefore the Delegates of the University Press kindly agreed to allow me to edit the manuscript my father left behind him, two courses were open to me. Book Agriculture Ancient and Modern Vol 1

Download or read book Agriculture Ancient and Modern Vol 1 written by Samuel Copland and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-10-22 with total page 902 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Agriculture, Ancient and Modern, Vol. 1: A Historical Account of Its Principles and Practice, Exemplified in Their Rise, Progress, and Development About the year 1820 the interests of the writer led him to leave the country and reside in the metropolis. Engaged in other pursuits than agriculture, but still nearly connected with it, and holding intercourse with many agricultural friends, he continued to watch with a lover's eye the progress of improvement in that his favourite branch of rural industry. After some years, an engagement with a friend caused him to settle in Ireland, where, in addition to the business which took him thither, he occupied himself in cultivating a few acres of land attached to the house in which he resided. In 1848 he made an engagement with the editor of the Advocate newspaper (at that time the best agricultural and industrial journal in Ireland), as a writer on agricultural and other subjects. This engagement he retained until 1853, when he returned to London, and immediately obtained employment in the same capacity from the editor of the Mark Lame Express, which paper he is still connected with and it has brought under his imme diate consideration the Opinions and practical experience of the most eminent farmers in every part of the United Kingdom, as well as on the Continent. With such preparatory experience, he did not hesitate, when called on by the publishers, to undertake the present Work, of which he thinks it proper now to give a brief account, as it differs in some respects from all previous works of the kind. In reading a great number of these, it has occurred to him that the nature of landed property is seldom or never touched upon, and that where referred to, very slight and inadequate ideas are conveyed respecting it. In Part I. Vol. I., he has therefore given a concise historical account of the origin of property in land, commencing with the patriarchal, which merged into the feudal system, and describing the processes by which the various tenures now existing were established; also the value of land at different periods of history, and some of the most important laws by which it is governed. Part II. Contains, with a short history of the rise and progress of Agriculture in England, a brief sketch of that of other countries, principally adverting to the hindrances existing to its advancement, and the efforts making to counteract those impediments. Part III. Relates to the connection of Agricul ture with physical science, giving a sketch of those sciences immediately applicable to the farm. Part IV. Relates to the domestic animals of the farm, their various species and varieties, and a history of these improvements in the various breeds which have raised their character and value in every part of the world. Part V. Gives a history of the vegetable kingdom, and the various kinds of agricultural produce. Part VI. Contains an account of British husbandry, the different kinds of farms, the implements and machines employed in husbandry, the history of steam cultivation, and all the newly invented machines for lessening the amount of hand labour. Part VII. Relates to different modes of draining and fencing, manures, the dairy, irrigation, soils, seed, &c.
