Book A Short History of England from the Earliest Times to the Present Day Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Short History of England from the Earliest Times to the Present Day Classic Reprint written by Cyril Ransome and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-01 with total page 522 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short History of England, From the Earliest Times to the Present Day The aim of this History of England is to give a short narrative of the growth of the British Empire and Constitution from the earliest times to the present day, in such a form and within such limits as shall supply the wants of middle and upper forms at schools, candidates for university and civil service examinations, and for the army and navy, pupil and assistant teachers at elementary schools, and students in training colleges, and also shall give a clear and intelligible account of those events and institutions a knowledge of which is so much needed by the student of modern political life. To attain all these ends within the space of 450 pages has been a most difficult task, and a rigid censorship has been needed, both in choosing the subjects and events to be mentioned, and in allotting an appropriate space to each. In deciding what subjects to admit, I have had with great regret to omit all references to the manners and customs of the people, except where they have borne directly upon political events; on the other hand, greater space has been given to the working of economic causes than has been usual in a book of this size. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Advanced History of England: From the Earliest Times to the Present Day The object of this book is to carry the study of English History a stage further than has been done in my Short History of England (longmans and It has been specially designed to meet the wants of four classes of readers: (1) of those, either at school or college, who, having mastered the elements of English History in such a book as the author's Elementary History of England (rivington, Percival, and and what are known as the 'outlines in such a book as the author's Short History, are preparing to study in greater detail such a period as 1485 to 1603, or 1714 to 1815 (2) of teachers who, while taking a class in the elements or outlines, ' wish to have in their own hands a fuller and more developed treatment of events 3 (3) of university students, who require a fuller treatment of the whole course of events than is given in the Short History; and (4) of those of the general public who wish to have in their hands a handy but fairly full history to which they may turn for ready information on the historical points that crop up day by day in politics or conversation. Book excerpt: The first book in Peter Ackroyd's history of England series, which has since been followed up with two more installments, Tudors and Rebellion. In Foundation, the chronicler of London and of its river, the Thames, takes us from the primeval forests of England's prehistory to the death, in 1509, of the first Tudor king, Henry VII. He guides us from the building of Stonehenge to the founding of the two great glories of medieval England: common law and the cathedrals. He shows us glimpses of the country's most distant past--a Neolithic stirrup found in a grave, a Roman fort, a Saxon tomb, a medieval manor house--and describes in rich prose the successive waves of invaders who made England English, despite being themselves Roman, Viking, Saxon, or Norman French. With his extraordinary skill for evoking time and place and his acute eye for the telling detail, Ackroyd recounts the story of warring kings, of civil strife, and foreign wars. But he also gives us a vivid sense of how England's early people lived: the homes they built, the clothes the wore, the food they ate, even the jokes they told. All are brought vividly to life in this history of England through the narrative mastery of one of Britain's finest writers.

Book A Short History of Britain

Download or read book A Short History of Britain written by Jeremy Black and published by Bloomsbury Publishing. This book was released on 2015-04-23 with total page 207 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Covering over 2,000 years in under 200 pages, Jeremy Black takes the reader on a breathless tour of British history, providing invaluable context for students of any period. A truly British overview, this book covers all four constituent parts of the UK, as well as migration to and from Britain, and introduces questions of national identity and collective memory. The author begins by considering how the geography of Britain has influenced its development and goes on to examine the formation of its society and political culture. Resisting the Whiggish tradition of triumphalist national histories, Jeremy Black provides a balanced and sensitive account in his trademark pithy style. This new edition has been considerably revised and expanded, bringing the coverage right up to the present day, including what the Scottish referendum on independence says about the nature of modern 'Britishness'.
