Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Short Latin Grammar: Forming Part of a Popular System of Classical Instruction It is not intended to disparage the Grammar now commonly distinguished by the epithet of Eton. On the contrary, we thankfully acknowledge our obligation to its Original Authors; and only lament that, from particular circumstances in its production, it has not been always of that use, for which it is essentially adapted. A short detail of the history of its gradual assumption of its present form will fully explain its incongruities. It should be premised that this Grammar was originally compiled for the use of St. Paul's School, of which dean colet was the Founder, and william lily the first Master. This original, though now very rare, and scarcely known to exist, except as the foundation of our modern grammars, was a notable production in its day: Cardinal Wolsey recommended it by a Latin Preface, in which a course of Classical Instruction was prescribed to all other Seminaries, and its use was enjoined in every School throughout the whole kingdom. Supported by such powerful patronage, as well as by its own unquestionable merits, we can not be surprised at its extensive circulation, and adoption as a standard Introduction to the Latin Language. Accordingly. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Latin Grammar IN this short Grammar of the Latin Accidence I have endeavoured to arrange the paradigms in such a way as to give some hint of the connection between the different forms, Without departing from the traditional number and order of Declensions and Conjugations. In the arrange ment by stems I have closely followed Mr. Roby, even in the somewhat uncertain distinction between consonant and i-stems in the Third Declension pf Nouns, feeling that some division is necessary, and that his is more satisfactory than any other. Download or read book A Latin Grammar for Schools Classic Reprint written by Henry John Roby and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-09-26 with total page 454 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Latin Grammar for Schools This book is in the main an abridgment for school purposes of my larger Latin Grammar, but the abridgment is very unequal, some pans being reproduced with slight omissions, some parts bem g largely reduced, and others again being rewritten. Under the last head fall especially chaps. I and ii of Book I, and chap. Vi of Book II. Of the last-named chapter, part, particularly 132, contains an analysis which is, I think, new and interesting. I have added an English trans lation of the Examples in almost the whole of the Syntax. It Will be found that in some cases I have given the ordinary English equivalent, whilst in others I have aimed rather at explaining the Latin construction. Three Appendices are new, viz. Those on Metre, on Grammatical and Rhetorical terms, and on Latin authors. Some changes in arrangement have been made (e. G. As regards degrees of comparison, and Numerals) to suit ordinary usage. The Index has been made fuller than is usual m a book of this class - so full, that it may not be unimportant to observe that the book is really intended not for reference, but for study: The lists are not exhaustive, the statements of occur rence or non-occurrence of forms or expressions must not be taken too literally, but only as approximations to the truth, with especial regard to the classical authors and' usages of recognized authority in schools and many of the rarer usages are not noticed at all, but left to be picked up in the student's own reading, or obtained, when needed, from a dictionary. Book Concise Latin Grammar Classic Reprint

Download or read book Concise Latin Grammar Classic Reprint written by Benjamin L. D'Ooge and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-21 with total page 436 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Concise Latin Grammar The purpose of the author in preparing this book has been to provide, in as concise a form as possible, a Latin grammar which should be of equal service to the high-school pupil and to the college undergraduate. 'to meet the needs of the former the fundamental and essential facts of the language have been stated as simply as possible and have been given due prominence on an Open page. Statements of secondary importance appear in smaller type and all material that would be confusing to the beginner has been relegated to footnotes, and these have been reduced to a minimum. At the same time the scope of the book is such as to include all that is needed for translation of authors usually read in college. There is an obvious advantage to the student in using the same grammar throughout his Latin course. The needs of the student have been made the guiding principle in the treatment of the examples. These are numerous and have been taken by preference from the portions of Caesar, Cicero, and Vergil read in' secondary schools. Furthermore, they have been simplified when too difficult for ready comprehension, without, however, destroying their validity. In the matter of grammatical nomenclature a conservative attitude has been taken, but such of the new terms have been adopted as seem likely to win general acceptance. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Latin Grammar for Schools and Colleges Tun work now offered to the public had its origin in a desire to promote the cause of Classical study. It has long been the Opinion of the author, in common with numerous classical teachers, that the subject of Latin Grammar, often regarded as dry and dif ficult, may be presented to the learner in a form at once simple, attractive, and philosophical. It is the aim of this manual to aid the instructor in the attainment of this most desirable end. That the present is a favorable time for the production of a Latin Grammar scarcely admits of a doubt. Never before were there such facilities for the work. The last quarter of a century has formed an epoch in the study of language and in the methods of instruction. During this period some of the most gifted minds of Germany have been gathering the choicest treasures in the field of philology, while others have been equally successful in devising improved methods of instruction. In our own country too, the more enterprising teachers have caught the spirit of improvement, and are calling loudly for a better method than has hitherto pre vailed in classical study. The present work has been prepared in view of these facts. To explain its general plan, the author begs leave to specify the following points. Book A Brief Latin Grammar Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Brief Latin Grammar Classic Reprint written by W. D. Mooney and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-31 with total page 284 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Brief Latin Grammar The author of this book feels that there is an impera tive need for such a brief manual of Latin Grammar as the French, and, more particularly, the Germans, have had for years. Such a manual, intended primarily for use in secondary schools, can be made brief by omitting excep tional usages and by reducing the usual array of quotations to a minimum. It can be simplified by stating the leading facts of the language clearly and concisely. The present work, designed to cover the ground mentioned, is largely the outgrowth of practical experience in the class-room. Everywhere the effort has been made to state material points only, and to give these in the simplest and most direct way. The work has been further condensed and simplified by the use of typographical devices in the form of summaries and tables. The examples given are few, and are taken from the classics usually read first by the student. It is assumed that a single example which clearly illustrates the principle stated is worth more to the student than a number of sentences on no one of which his attention is concentrated. The Index of Gram matical References (p. 239) is intended to facilitate the use of this manual in connection with texts referring to the standard Latin Grammars.
