Book Chapman Pincher Dangerous to Know

Download or read book Chapman Pincher Dangerous to Know written by Chapman Pincher and published by Biteback Publishing. This book was released on 2014-02-21 with total page 299 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Harry Chapman Pincher is a legend among journalists. As an investigative reporter, he struck terror into those trying to hide the murky secrets of state. After early careers as a teacher, a scientist and a soldier, Chapman Pincher joined Lord Beaverbrook's then all-powerful Daily Expressin the summer of 1945 - and quickly became the master of the journalistic scoop. His first splash, a top-secret account of the development of the atomic bomb, sparked a furious transatlantic row. It was only the start of a career in which his name became synonymous with high-level exclusives from the most secret corners of government. When he finally retired from journalism, the leaks kept coming, leading to a series of bestselling books on the infiltration of Britain's intelligence services by Moscow, culminating in his allegation that the head of MI5 was in fact a Soviet spy. In Dangerous to Know, Chapman Pincher took pen to paper to describe the extraordinary events he witnessed and the varied characters he encountered. Colourful, indiscreet and compelling, this is the life of a true journalistic colossus and a revealing description of the century he bestrode.

Book Feminist Posthumanism in Contemporary Science Fiction Film and Media

Download or read book Feminist Posthumanism in Contemporary Science Fiction Film and Media written by Julia A. Empey and published by Bloomsbury Publishing USA. This book was released on 2023-08-24 with total page 329 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Feminist Posthumanism in Contemporary Science Fiction Film and Media: From Annihilation to High Life and Beyond places posthumanism and feminist theory into dialogue with contemporary science fiction film and media. This essay collection is intimately invested in the debates around the posthuman and the critical posthumanities within a feminist critical-theoretical framework. In this posthumanist light, science fiction as a genre allows for new imaginings of human-technological relations, while it can also be the site of a critique of human exceptionalism and essentialism. In this way, science fiction affords unique opportunities for the scholarly investigation of the relevance and relative applicability of specific posthumanist themes and questions in a particularly rich and wide-ranging popular cultural field of production. One of the reasons for this suitability is the genre's historically longstanding relationship with the critical investigation of gender, specifically the position and relative empowerment of women. The original analyses presented here pay close attention to audiovisual style (including game mechanics), facilitating the critical interrogation of the issues and questions around posthumanism. Where typically the mention of SF in the posthumanist context calls to mind a whole set of (often clichéd) tropes-the cyborg, technologically augmented bodies, AI subjectivities, etc.-this volume's thirteen chapters analyze specific examples of contemporary SF cinema that engage in meaningful ways with the burgeoning field of critical posthumanism, and that utilize such films to interrogate posthumanist and feminist as well as humanistic ideas.

Download or read book We Shot the War written by Lisa Nguyen and published by Hoover Press. This book was released on 2018-11-01 with total page 225 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: We Shot the War: Overseas Weekly in Vietnam examines the legacy of one of the most popular and eccentric newspapers to cover the Vietnam War. With its mix of hard-hitting military exposÉs, pinups, and comic strips, Overseas Weekly earned a reputation as a muckraking truth teller. Time magazine called it "the least popular publication at the Pentagon." From 1966 to 1972, the paper's reporters and photographers tackled controversial topics, including courts-martial, racial discrimination, drug use, and opposition to command. And they published some of the most intimate portraits of American GIs and Vietnamese civilians, taken with the specific purpose of documenting the daily life of individuals caught in the world's most grueling and disputed conflict. Through striking photographs and personal essays, We Shot the War brings viewers behind the viewfinders of photojournalists who covered the conflict and introduces readers to two extraordinary women: founder Marion von Rospach and Saigon office bureau chief Ann Bryan. Together, they fought for the right of women to report in combat zones and argued against media censorship. Foreword by Eric Wakin Contributors: Cynthia Copple, Art Greenspon, Don Hirst, Brent Procter

Book excerpt: In The Lonely Men, Louis L’Amour spins the tale of a man who must elude an Apache trap—only to discover that his greatest enemy might be very close to home. Tell Sackett had fought his share of Indians and managed to take something of value from his battles: a deep and abiding respect. But that respect is lost when Apache braves kidnap his nephew, forcing Tell to cross the border into the Sierra Madres to bring the boy back. What troubles Tell more, though, is the boy’s mother: Could she possibly be inventing a rescue mission to deliver her husband’s brother into an ambush? Tell knows that the only things he can depend on are his wits and cold steel. But against such adversaries, even these formidable weapons may not be enough.
