Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Demineralization of enamel has been one of the iatrogenic effects of fixed orthodontic therapy, for which various authors have suggested the use of fluoride to reduce the decalcification and development of white spot lesion. In the present study, the shear bond strength of light-cure composite adhesive, self-cure composite adhesive, light-cure glass ionomer cement and acidic primer were tested at the end of 24 hours after bonding. The results proved that the acidic primer system had highest shear bond strength while Light-cure glass ionomer system had the least shear bond strength. But the mean values met the minimal shear bond strength required for orthodontic bonding. After bond failure, least amount of glass ionomer cement was present on the enamel surface, followed by acidic primer system, light-cure composite and self-cure composite system. So, it is advantageous to use light-cure glass ionomer cement for bonding in terms of less amount of time spent and no enamel damage during cleaning procedure after debonding.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The evolution of orthodontic materials in the past 5 decades has been a unique progress curve characterized by periods of intense activity with many developments followed by long quiescent intervals. An example of the delay in adopting the advances in dentistry might well be illustrated by the acid-etching technique, which was introduced in the mid 1950s1 and became universally accepted in the 1960s. It took more than a decade for this practice to become standard procedure in orthodontics on a large scale. Infact, orthodontic bonding has advanced more in last 10 years than previous 25. In the past decade, we have witnessed unprecedented progress in bonding to enamel with various materials techniques and auxiliaries involving glass ionomer bonding, self-etching primers, and new, powerful light-curing sources, along with self-ligating brackets and a different treatment concept, the Invisalign technique.

Book Orthodontic Bracket Bond Strength and Resin Composite Adhesive Degree of Conversion Associated with Type of Curing Unit and Total Energy

Download or read book Orthodontic Bracket Bond Strength and Resin Composite Adhesive Degree of Conversion Associated with Type of Curing Unit and Total Energy written by Natalia Henbest and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page 53 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examined the effect of light curing sources on shear bond strength and degree of conversion of orthodontic resin composite adhesive as function of type of curing unit and total energy, as well as evaluated the correlation between shear bond strength and degree of conversion. Curing units included in the study were plasma arc (PA), light emitting diode (LED) and quartz tungsten halogen (QTH) with 5k, 10k, or 15k mJ/cm2 of total energy delivered to the orthodontic adhesive by each unit type. Based on an analysis of variance (a =.05), there was no significant effect of type of curing source on shear bond strength; however, there was a significant effect of total energy, with shear bond strength increasing as energy increased across curing units. For degree of conversion there was a significant effect of curing unit with PA producing higher degree of conversion than LED or QTH, which were not significantly different from each other. There was also a significant effect of total energy on degree of conversion with a significant increase between 5k to 10k mJ/cm2. There was a positive moderate overall correlation between shear bond strength and degree of conversion. Results of this study suggest that the PA curing unit is more efficient at polymerization (degree of conversion) of orthodontic resin composite adhesive. However, there is no difference in shear bond strength produced when using PA, LED or QTH curing sources for orthodontic bracket bonding procedures when equal total energy is delivered to the adhesive.

Book Evaluation of Shear peel Bond Strengths of Orthodontic Attachments to Moist and Dry Enamel

Download or read book Evaluation of Shear peel Bond Strengths of Orthodontic Attachments to Moist and Dry Enamel written by and published by . This book was released on 2000 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of this study was to evaluate the shear-peel bond strengths of orthodontic attachments bonded to enamel surfaces under varying conditions. A light-cured composite adhesive was compared to a cyanoacrylate adhesive and a composite hybrid adhesive. The shear-peel bond strengths in this study are stated as 24 hours vs. 6 months and were as follows: Transbond(tm) XT/dry (10.57 +- 2.83 MPa vs 12.23 +- 3.14 MPa), Assure(tm)/dry (6.93 +- 2.2 MPa vs 8.18 +- 1.39 MPa), Smartbond(R)/dry (3.91 +- 1.17 MPa vs 4.11 +- 1.96 MPa), Transbond(tm) XT/moist (0.14 +- 0.31 MPa vs 0 +- 0 MPa), Assure(tm)/moist (6.03 +- 1.77 MPa vs 6.86 +- 2.81 MPa), and Smartbond(R)/moist (3.22 +- 0.52 MPa vs 2.4 +- 0.96 MPa). There was a statistically significant difference (p 0.05) between (1) the different adhesives (2) the dry and moist conditions of Transbond(tm) XT. There was no statistically significant difference (p 0.05) between (1) the dry and moist conditions of Assure(tm) and Smartbond(R) (2) the 24 hour and 6 month time frame for all adhesives. (Abstract shortened by UMI.).

Book Evaluation Of The S B S Of a Composites Used For Orthodontic Bonding

Download or read book Evaluation Of The S B S Of a Composites Used For Orthodontic Bonding written by Pradeep Subbaiah and published by LAP Lambert Academic Publishing. This book was released on 2012 with total page 96 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The following conclusions are drawn from this comparative in-vitro study on the shear bond strength and debonding characters of Transbond XT, Esthet-X Flow and Filtek Z-350 using metal brackets Filtek Z-350 has a comparable mean bond strength value (11.07+/-1.03 MPa) like that of Transbond XT (11.58+/-1.3 MPa). Esthet-X Flow has slightly lower mean bond strength value (10.70+/-2.0 MPa) compared Filtek Z-350 and Transbond XT. All the three adhesives exhibited clinically acceptable bond strength. 60-70% of all the three adhesives exhibited cohesive type of bond failure. The efficacy of the flowable composites as a bonding agent needs invivo and clinical assessment through a survival analysis. Filtek Z-350 and Esthet-X flow exhibited problems with handling properties and flowability. Drifting of brackets was noted and pressure was needed for positioning the bracket with Filtek Z-350 and Esthet-X flow. The flow property and viscosity should be balanced to obtain optimal consistency to achieve optimal bond strength and improve handling property for Filtek Z-350 and Esthet-X flow.

Book The Effect of the Blue Light Diode Laser on Shear peel Bond Strength of Orthodontic Brackets with Varying Curing Time and Distance

Download or read book The Effect of the Blue Light Diode Laser on Shear peel Bond Strength of Orthodontic Brackets with Varying Curing Time and Distance written by Kamran Shaikh and published by . This book was released on 2010 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Background: Light cured composite resin can be time consuming for bonding orthodontic brackets. A new Blue light diode laser may reduce curing times for composite resins. Hypothesis: The laser will achieve similar bond strengths in half the time and at greater distances as the LED. Methods: 90 extracted premolars will be bonded and cured using Laser and LED curing units at varying times, another 120 extracted premolars will be bonded and cured at varying distances. An Instron machine will be used to test shear bond strength. Results: The laser was not able to achieve similar bond strengths as the LED curing light in half of the curing time. At 5 seconds, the laser had 35% lower bond strengths but was still in the clinically acceptable range. The laser achieved similar bond strengths when the curing tip was at greater distances as when it was close to the bracket-adhesive-tooth interface.

Book Polymerization with the Argon Laser

Download or read book Polymerization with the Argon Laser written by Nazir Lalani and published by National Library of Canada = Bibliothèque nationale du Canada. This book was released on 1998 with total page 58 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The objective of this study was to determine the efficiency of an argon laser in polymerizing a light cure orthodontic adhesive. Metal brackets were bonded to 37 buccal and 148 lingual surfaces of 185 premolars. Five groups of 37 premolars were cured as follows: Light 40 seconds buccal, light 40 seconds lingual, laser 5 seconds lingual, laser 10 seconds lingual and laser 15 seconds lingual. All bonded specimens were placed in distilled water for 30 days at 37$\sp\circ$C and thermal cycled for 24 hours. The brackets were detached using a shear load on an Instron machine and the site of bond failure was examined under 10X magnification.
