This book was released on 2018-01-22 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fast-Day Sermon: Delivered Before the United Congregational and Baptist Societies I, as giving expression to your feelings, would rejoice that this prosperous scene, for a brief interregnum interrupted, is to be continued yes, more than this, there are to be added touches of beauty by the Great Limner's hand. The fate of civilization, of humanity, of religion, were all involved in the preservation of the Union. Not only were the hopes and liberties of the Amer ican nation at stake, but those of all mankind. Here was the question being settled - whether men were capable of self-gov ernment, and yet be subject to government. The question was being decided whether government was a boon to the people, or a boon granted by the people; whether the people were made for the government, or the government for the people. To state the issue tersely, and all comprehensively - whether man is man however low in the social scale, entrusted by God with destinies and responsibilities, both for this world, and the world to come, for the fulfilment of which the law of his nature teaches him there shall be no interferance on the part of the government, or any class with select privileges, or the masses of the people. Book A Sermon Preached on the National Fast Day at Church Green Boston Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Sermon Preached on the National Fast Day at Church Green Boston Classic Reprint written by Orville Dewey and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 28 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sermon, Preached on the National Fast Day, at Church Green, Boston I Shall take for my text this morning, the Psalm which I have just read to you. It is applicable to the occasion on which we are met together. Its application here, to-day, is even more striking than it was originally. In this way it was that many a text of the old time was "fulfilled," - filled fuller of meaning, when applied to the events of a later day. And so it is now. For here God hath planted a nation, far greater and more prosperous than that of the Hebrews. He has "cast out the heathen, and planted it." It is by ordinance divine, we believe, - though we do not defend every human action connected with it, - that poor, ignorant, wandering tribes were to give place to a great and civilized people. This North American continent was not meant to be a mere hunting-ground. Not wild native growths were to overrun and occupy it; but the seeds of civilized empire were to be planted here. Book Union National Fast Day Sermon

Download or read book Union National Fast Day Sermon written by T. P. Bucher and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-18 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Union National Fast Day Sermon: Delivered in the United Presbyterian Church, Gettysburg, P. A., Friday, January 4, A. D. 1861 This is a very solemn occasion which brings us of various creeds and parties together in this holy temple. God the Father Almighty is to be worshipped through Jesus Christ his Son our Lord, in beseem ing devotions, in View of the troubled and threaten ing aspect of our national affairs. An inward consciousness guided by the teachings of Holy Writ has brought us, as a people, to make humble recognition of the Divine Sovereignty, that the Lord, who is God, visits individuals and nations with His just judgments for their sins; that to those who fear His name, He is both merciful and good. And from thousands of christian altars, when Sab bath worship fills the Sanctuary, prayers have been ascending to God, and daily prayers from millions of pious hearts, in behalf of our Country in this hour of her extremity. But as a nation we are dismayed; as a nation then we must acknowledge our sins, and by fasting and prayer sue for pardon, and that direction which will bring deliverance from present dangers. Such hum blings under the mighty hand of God and such plead ings are suggested not only by the biblical page, but also by incidents in our own past history. During the revolutionary struggle when hope seem ed to fail, and unnerving destitution stared the soldi ery, the Revolutionary Congress appointed a season to be observed in fasting and prayer. Book A Sermon Preached on Fast Day

Download or read book A Sermon Preached on Fast Day written by Thomas Doggett and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-10 with total page 24 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sermon Preached on Fast Day: September 26, 1861 Judges XIX.30, - "And it was so, that all that saw it said, there was no such deed done nor seen from the day that the children of Israel came up out of the land of Egypt unto this day; Consider of it, take advice, and speak your minds." We are convened to-day by public authority. The President of the United States, and the Governor of our own Commonwealth, have united in the recommendation and request, that we should observe this day as a day of Prayer. They have but given voice to the general sentiment and desire of our people, who as a nation, feel in an unusual degree, the need and blessedness of the Divine favor. If we feel called upon to bow in supplication and penitence in time of private grief, much more shall we at time of wide spread and national sorrow. National calamity is a call to national humiliation. It needs no especial insight to see that as a people we are in the furnace of affliction; that as a people we are passing through the valley of the shadow of death. Though want and famine, desolation and pestilence, are not in our homes and in our streets, yet the very principles, that are the soul and life blood of our national being; that give value to houses, and lands, and life, are placed in jeopardy, and menaced with destruction. This is the meaning of the war now raging. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. This book was released on 2017-02-20 with total page 20 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Fast-Day Sermon, Preached in the Good Hope Church, Lowndes County, Alabama, Thursday, June 13th, 1861 But further still are our people guilty. Walk down the streets of our large cities and even of our villages, and upon the lips of avery large proportion of those you meet, the sacred name of God trembles irreverently; and even little children, following the example of those who should teach them reverence, use it only to add emphasis to their assertions! Sabbath after sabbath is prostituted to game making and sport and merriment at the will of a crowd, instead of being employed by them as a day of sacred rest and worship. The Sabbatic rest of the fields is broken by the shrill whistle of the locomotive, while the rivers are agitated by the paddles of the steamboat. There are other sins which might be brought to view as cause for repentance, and which clamor loudly for reform. O people of the South wound no more your mother, upon whose bosom you have securely nestled; but bear her, now weeping and bleeding, upon your arms to the throne, and while you weep with her and for her, confess her sins and your sins there, with a spirit of humble penitence, and God will ac knowledge and accept the sacrifice, and answer with speedy and abundant blessing. If my people upon whom my name is called, shall humble themselves and pray and seek my face, and turn from their wicked ways; then will I hear from heaven, and will forgive their sin and will heal the land. 2 Chron. VII. 14. Behold I will bring it health and cure - and will reveal unto them the abundance of peace and truth. Jer. XXXIII. 6. But there are peculiar blessings of temporal character hav ing special and immediate reference to the present condition of the land which we should make the subject of importunate prayer. The distracted country calls loudly for peace. She wants not war, and at the sight of blood, shudders and turns pale not from fear, but sorrow. She deprecates the scene of war and carnage and blood. She weeps even while she strikes. She weeps for departed peace - not because she is a coward, but a here! Not because she dare not maintain the right, but because she does not want the right to bleed. She has made overture upon over ture, and yet her plea is not regarded. Her valiant ones cry without - the ambassadors of peace weep bitterly. Her foe, hath broken the covenant - he hath despised the cities - he regardeth no man. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Faith and Patience: A Sermon for the Times Isaiah prophesied during some of the best, and some of the worst periods of Jewish history. It is not sur prising therefore that his writings should reflect his times. Accordingly we find them, as we sometimes find the skies, piled with tremendous masses of angry cloud, but broken here and there with patches of blue, so pure and rich, as to reassure every beholder of the necessary evanescence of the storm, and of the certainty of the returning calm. Here are some specimens Of these clouds, Behold the Lord maketh the earth empty, and maketh it waste, and turneth it upside down, and scattereth abroad the inhabitants thereof. The earth mourneth and fadeth away, the world languisheth and fadeth away. In the city is left desolation and the gate is smitten with destruction. Now look through the openings in these clouds, and see how rich a blue lies beyond. Behold I lay in Zion for a foundation a stone, a tried stone, a precious corner stone, a sure foundation. In other words, these clouds that enshroud Zion, and fill the hearts of the timid and unbelieving with dismay, are only the dust of Jehovah's feet as he comes to lay in Zion that precious corner stone. Let this truth take fast hold Of the mind. And what will be the effect? He that believeth it will not make haste. He will not fret with impatience at the tardiness of divine providence, for when God begins to build, the cost has been counted, and the work will assuredly be completed. Book Reform and Repeal

Download or read book Reform and Repeal written by John Weiss and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-01-12 with total page 34 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Reform and Repeal: A Sermon Preached on Fast-Day, April 6, 1854 In the presence of God, and in the act of worship, we forbear to indulge in any imputation of bad motives, or in personal indignation levelled against persons. We observe results, we deal with principles, we contrast the effects of associated action with the eternal sentiments of the Gos pel. And if we find a principle of Divine equity, or a rule of common morals and decency, violated, we proclaim it because we reverence what is just, we confess it because we know that we are implicated in all the public manifes tations which create government and carry on the life of a country. We dare not enter into the question of motives; we can only expose a corrupt level of sentiment. Men may live on such a level unconsciously, and may share its immoral actions in mechanical obedience to legal requi sitions, out of gregarious instincts, and from lack of the highest enlightenment. Among other public evils, we find this coarse and oppressive one of assumption of criminal intent; and it is no better when combined with vindica tion of principles than when it is used against principle to eke out a defence of wrong. Moreover, the amount of character to be defamed may be great or little, but the sin of defamation is equally great in all cases, because impar tial and unerring judgment is not within the capacity of man, even when all the lights of knowledge guide him, and his passions sleep; least of all when he is thinking and speaking in the dust of a conflict, stimulated by pressing.
