Book The Global Flows of Early Scottish Photography

Download or read book The Global Flows of Early Scottish Photography written by Anthony W. Lee and published by McGill-Queen's Press - MQUP. This book was released on 2019-05-30 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Almost immediately after the invention of photography, Scottish photographers took their clunky cameras on the road to capture the stories of peoples and communities touched by the forces of British imperialism. For the next thirty years, their journeys would take them far from their homes in the Lowlands to the Canadian wilderness and the treaty ports and rivers of China. The Global Flows of Early Scottish Photography is about the interplay between these photographers' ambitions and the needs and desires of the people they met. Anthony Lee tracks the work of several famous innovators of the art form, including the pioneering team of D.O. Hill and Robert Adamson in Edinburgh; Canada's first great photographers, the Scottish immigrants William Notman and Alexander Henderson in Montreal; the globetrotting John Thomson in Hong Kong; and Lai Afong, the first widely known Chinese photographer. Lee reveals their pictures in the context of migration and the social impact wrought by worldwide trade and competing nationalisms. A timely book, it tells of an era when cameras emerged to give shape and meaning to some of the most defining moments brought about by globalization in the nineteenth century. Beautifully written and richly illustrated in full colour, The Global Flows of Early Scottish Photography weaves stories together to show that even the earliest pictures were sites of fierce historical struggle.

Download or read book Series of Original Portraits and Caricature Etchings Vol 1 written by John Kay and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Series of Original Portraits and Caricature Etchings, Vol. 1: With Biographical Sketches and Illustrative Anecdotes The Works of the late john kay illustrate an interesting epoch in the history of the Scottish capital. Throughout the greater part of half a century the Artist devoted himself with enthusiasm to his novel under taking; and while he contributed in no common degree to gratify and amuse the public of his own day, his graphic productions form a record which cannot fail to prove peculiarly acceptable in after times. Although the Etchings may not be entitled to rank high in the scale of art, they are nevertheless valuable as the unaided efforts of one who owed nothing to adventitious circumstances - while the general accuracy for which the Portraitures are distinguished is a merit peculiarly his own. The intuitive facility of the Artist's pencil in this way must appear incre dible, when it is known that, with few exceptions, they were executed from casual observation - the impression probably of a passing glance. Indeed, in many instances, they could not have been otherwise obtained. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book The Regius Chair of Military Surgery in the University of Edinburgh 1806 55

Download or read book The Regius Chair of Military Surgery in the University of Edinburgh 1806 55 written by Matthew H. Kaufman and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2016-09-12 with total page 276 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The significance of the Regius Chair of Military Surgery that existed in the University of Edinburgh from 1806–55 is discussed in detail for the first time in this book. The first holder, John Thomson, also held the Royal College of Surgeons of Edinburgh's Chair of Surgery from 1804. This Regius Chair was the only one of its type in Britain for almost 50 years, and was established during the Peninsular War. After the second holder, Sir George Ballingall, died in 1855, the Government withdrew its funding support. This Chair introduced numerous Edinburgh medical students to Military Surgery, and many who attended subsequently entered the Medical Service of either the Army, Navy or East India Company. Large numbers of medical officers in the Public service also attended. These courses were popular, and the topics covered were not discussed elsewhere in the Edinburgh medical curriculum.

Book Police Courts in Nineteenth Century Scotland 2 volume set

Download or read book Police Courts in Nineteenth Century Scotland 2 volume set written by David G. Barrie and published by Taylor & Francis. This book was released on 2022-07-30 with total page 831 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Taking the form of two companion volumes, Police Courts in Nineteenth-Century Scotland represents the first major investigation into the administration, experience, impact and representation of summary justice in Scottish towns, c.1800 to 1892. Each volume explores diverse, but complementary, themes relating to judicial practices, relationships, experiences and discourses through the lens of the same subject matter: the police court. Volume 1, subtitled Magistrates, Media and the Masses, provides an institutional, social and cultural history of the establishment, development and practice of police courts. It explores their rise, purpose and internal workings, and how justice was administered and experienced by those who attended them in a variety of roles. Special attention is given to examining how courtroom discourse was represented in print culture, the role of the media in providing a discursive commentary on summary justice, and the ways in which magistrates and the police engaged in a law and order dialogue with the press. Throughout, consideration is given to uncovering the relationship between magistrates, the courts, the police and the wider community, and to charting the implications of the rise of summary justice and the ’police-man’ state for the urban masses (as evidenced through prosecution, conviction and punishment patterns). Volume 2, subtitled Boundaries, Behaviours and Bodies, examines, through themed case studies, how these civic and judicial institutions shaped conceptual, spatial, temporal and commercial boundaries by regulating every-day activities, pastimes and cultures. As with Volume 1, Boundaries, Behaviours and Bodies is attentive to the relationship between magistrates, the police, the media and the wider community, but here the main focus of analysis is on the role and impact of the police courts, through their practice, on cultural ideas, social behaviours and environments in the nineteenth-century city.

Book Agreeable News from Persia

Download or read book Agreeable News from Persia written by D.T. Potts and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2022-09-06 with total page 2077 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Eighteenth and nineteenth century European, British and American newspapers constitute a rich and largely untapped source of contemporary, often eyewitness accounts of historical events and opinions concerning Iran from the late Safavid (1712) through the Qajar (c. 1797-1920) period. This study collects and annotates thousands of articles published in the Colonial and early Republican American newspapers, from the first mention of events in Persia in the American press (1712) to the death of Mohammad Shah (1848), unlocking for the first time a wealth of information on Iran and its place in the world during the 18th and early 19th century.
