Book A Sensational Case Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Sensational Case Classic Reprint written by Florence Warden and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 314 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Sensational Case It was at the Liverpool Autumn Assizes that the case came on, and the court was crowded to suffocation, for a man was on trial for his life. But this fact alone would not have accounted for the brilliant appearance of the court, every available corner of which was filled with ladies who, although for the most part they had arrayed themselves in garments of sober coloring, yet brought with them an atmosphere of "smartness" and an aroma of frivolity which gave a piquancy and an added interest to the scene. It was no common murder which brought these butterflies of society into the close air of the Assize Court. It was no common murderer, no unhappy laborer, arraigned for kicking to death a drunken wife, to gaze on whose features a fashionable beauty had travelled all the way from London and an American heiress had hurried back from Paris. It was a "Society case." The man on his trial, that is to say, was known at the London clubs and in the London ballrooms. He was young, moreover, and if not exactly good-looking, was at least "interesting." About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Intimately with the young man's death is, from a sensational point of view, of most clamant interest, yet there are many eddies and backwashes of the stream of evidence which are well worthy the attention of those who have the taste for studying the minutiae of a great. Trial; and, looking at the case from a purely technical point of view, it is important on account of the legal points which came up for decision and which form an appendix to this report. Book Queen City Gothic

Download or read book Queen City Gothic written by J. T. Townsend and published by AuthorHouse. This book was released on 2009-10-15 with total page 486 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Losing a loved one to murder is life’s ultimate tragedy. But when the killer is never captured, a family’s paralyzing grief only compounds. Years pass. Pain grows. Time heals nothing. Parents, spouses, and children of the victims never find peace. Investigators continue to lie awake night after night, year after year, thinking, “If only...” Cold cases fascinate us because of the endless possibilities. What if Alice Hochhausler hadn’t driven her daughter home from work while a strangler was running loose? What if Oda Apple’s wife hadn’t sent him to the corner drugstore? What if Linda Bricca hadn’t been so beautiful – and her husband not a workaholic? J. T. Townsend takes us on a sinister journey through thirteen cases, which took place in Cincinnati, Ohio, between 1904 and 1971. You’ll meet Frances Brady, a pretty bride-to-be gunned down at her own front door. Tommy Coby, age eight, who arrived home to an empty house, and learned later his parents were lying dead in their car. Patty Rebholz, a popular cheerleader, who was bludgeoned in a neighbor’s backyard while walking to break up with her teenage boyfriend. What do these cases have in common? A fleeting, irrational act of violence with no resolution. Somebody literally got away with murder. Each episode took place in sheer moments––but hundreds of innocent people still remember, still mourn, and are still haunted by horrible, unbearable images. Townsend’s riveting accounts include never-before-published details from police files and insights from both investigators and witnesses. Finally someone has managed to put all of the pieces together. Whodunit? We’ll never know for sure––but we can certainly make some informed, calculated guesses. Meanwhile, on these pages, each victim returns to vibrant life, becomes as real to us as to those loved ones they left behind––and still cries out for justice.

Book The Truth about the Frank Case Classic Reprint

Download or read book The Truth about the Frank Case Classic Reprint written by C. P. Connolly and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-28 with total page 102 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Truth About the Frank Case The following brief story of the Frank case, taken from the testimony and records of the trial, supplemented by a reference to newspaper files and by personal interviews with witnesses, ought to do some good in holding the mirror up to an ancient phase of human nature. Krupp has not yet made a gun powerful enough to pierce prejudice; and of all prejudice, religious and racial are the most obstinate and senseless. Here in America I think we have approximated tolerance in this regard more than anywhere on the globe, though I speak out of a patriotic faith more than from a personal knowledge. All humans are much alike, under whatever skies they dwell, or according to whatsoever creed they profess. The heart of the Russian peasant is much like the heart of the Illinois farmer. It is only the things we have been taught, and among them creed hate, that makes us different, one from the other. Who that has read of the persecution of the Jews in Russia and in Spain is not ready to cry out in condemnation of all racial and religious prejudice? I found Leo M. Frank one of that class of intellectual young men which is the hope of America. A finer type, judging from an observation running over three weeks, I do not know.
