Book A Semantic and Structural Analysis of Ephesians

Download or read book A Semantic and Structural Analysis of Ephesians written by Edna Johnson and published by Sil International, Global Publishing. This book was released on 2008 with total page 264 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The books in this series are analytical commentaries on the Greek text of New Testament books. Each book first identifies the high-level semantic components of the text and indicates the relationships between them. These components are then further analyzed to identify sub-components and their relationships. This process is continued until the basic units of communication, called propositions, are identified. These propositions are stated in semantically unskewed English glosses. Theme statements for paragraphs and larger units are derived from the analysis. A discussion of the evidence supporting the analysis is also given.

Book excerpt: The Word Biblical Commentary delivers the best in biblical scholarship, from the leading scholars of our day who share a commitment to Scripture as divine revelation. This series emphasizes a thorough analysis of textual, linguistic, structural, and theological evidence. The result is judicious and balanced insight into the meanings of the text in the framework of biblical theology. These widely acclaimed commentaries serve as exceptional resources for the professional theologian and instructor, the seminary or university student, the working minister, and everyone concerned with building theological understanding from a solid base of biblical scholarship. Overview of Commentary Organization Introduction—covers issues pertaining to the whole book, including context, date, authorship, composition, interpretive issues, purpose, and theology. Each section of the commentary includes: Pericope Bibliography—a helpful resource containing the most important works that pertain to each particular pericope. Translation—the author’s own translation of the biblical text, reflecting the end result of exegesis and attending to Hebrew and Greek idiomatic usage of words, phrases, and tenses, yet in reasonably good English. Notes—the author’s notes to the translation that address any textual variants, grammatical forms, syntactical constructions, basic meanings of words, and problems of translation. Form/Structure/Setting—a discussion of redaction, genre, sources, and tradition as they concern the origin of the pericope, its canonical form, and its relation to the biblical and extra-biblical contexts in order to illuminate the structure and character of the pericope. Rhetorical or compositional features important to understanding the passage are also introduced here. Comment—verse-by-verse interpretation of the text and dialogue with other interpreters, engaging with current opinion and scholarly research. Explanation—brings together all the results of the discussion in previous sections to expose the meaning and intention of the text at several levels: (1) within the context of the book itself; (2) its meaning in the OT or NT; (3) its place in the entire canon; (4) theological relevance to broader OT or NT issues. General Bibliography—occurring at the end of each volume, this extensive bibliographycontains all sources used anywhere in the commentary.

Book A Canonical Exegesis of the Eighth Psalm

Download or read book A Canonical Exegesis of the Eighth Psalm written by Hubert James Keener and published by Penn State Press. This book was released on 2013-10-31 with total page 235 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Since Brevard Childs first introduced it as a “fresh approach” in the late 1960s, canonical exegesis has grown into a widely discussed and developed program—virtually a “school” of biblical interpretation—with many scholars carrying forward an approach to theological exegesis that emphasizes the role of canon as the central context for interpretation of the Christian Scriptures. In this study, Keener takes a twofold approach: (1) he demonstrates that a canonical exegesis is tenable if the task is approached with clarity regarding its core theological foundation; and (2) he applies the approach to the interpretation of the often thorny questions surrounding the understanding of Psalm 8. This is useful in that Psalm 8 touches upon several questions germane to the successful implementation of canonical exegesis due to the many intertextual connections it shares with the rest of the Bible. Keener concludes that Psalm 8 in the Old Testament represents the intersection of two trajectories: (1) the reversal motif in which YHWH maintains the created order through the exaltation of the weak and the humble; and (2) the motif of the conflicted and conflicting human, in which humans are shown as beset by trials, often failing and even occupying the role of the enemies of YHWH. A third trajectory becomes visible in the context of the New Testament, that of the redeeming Christ; this third trajectory intersects with the two Old Testament trajectories and makes possible the redemption of conflicted humanity, giving the ultimate answer to the psalmist’s question, “What is the human?”

Book Beginning from Man and Woman

Download or read book Beginning from Man and Woman written by Bernard K. Wong and published by Langham Publishing. This book was released on 2017-04-30 with total page 303 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Engaging with contemporary thought on love and the family, Bernard Wong argues that our notion of love has been deeply influenced by modern technological culture and political ideologies, leading to the detriment of familial relationships. Dr Wong demonstrates how Christian doctrines can be used to critique and resist these ideologies. Through a careful analysis of Christ’s love expressed in his life, death, and resurrection, the author presents a notion of Christ’s love bearing the characteristics of fraternal, incarnational, and unfolding love. These aspects of Christ’s love are pertinent to the relationships between husbands and wives, parents and children, and families and their neighbours. It is through practicing Christ’s love that Christians strengthen their familial relationships and bear witness to Christ in the world.

Book A Linguistic Semantic Analysis of the Discourse Relations in the Greek Text of Ephesians

Download or read book A Linguistic Semantic Analysis of the Discourse Relations in the Greek Text of Ephesians written by Veroni Kruger and published by . This book was released on 2013 with total page pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A discourse analysis was done on the Greek text of Paul's letter to the Ephesians, as published by Nestle-Aland (26th edition) and the United Bible Societies (3rd edition). The discourse was analyzed into colons on syntactic grounds. Colons are regarded as consisting of a matrix (comprising a noun phrase and a verb phrase) with enlargements. Syntactic as well as thematic considerations determined the division of the letter into fourteen pericopes or paragraphs. The results of the colon and pericope divisions were recorded schematically. A detailed description of semantic relations was then undertaken. Relations between words, relations between colons, and finally relations between pericopes were considered from a semantic viewpoint. The purpose was to determine what the deep structure is in the letter to the Ephesians, as distinguished from the surface structure as it is apparent in the syntactic structure. In this way the semantic structure of words, colons and pericopes was described. Considering the theme of all the pericopes, a structure for the whole of Ephesians was suggested and tabulated. It was postulated that the theme of the letter is salvation, and specifically how God made salvation available to the heathen. This theme is stated in the first half of the letter (Eph 1-3), and in the second half the practical implications are described in the form of exhortations as to how everyday Christian living should be conducted. Pericope 4 (Eph 2.1-10) seems to be the focal point in the statement of the theme. Its centrality is indicated by the overall structure of Eph 1-3. The opening and closing pericopes of the letter are the frame in which the two major portions are enclosed. The dissertation represents a practical application of an approach to semantic relations discourse analysis developed primarily by J.P. Louw and E.A. Nida. Because it is a practical application, there is no discussion of the method itself. Other approaches were also considered, and the discerning reader may discover traces of these in the dissertation. Although the work is linguistic in nature, theological works on Ephesians were also studied in an attempt to place the linguistic commentary in perspective theologically. Hierdie benadering is veral ontwikkel deur J.P. Louw en E.A. Nida.

Book The Missions and Missional Purpose of Ephesians

Download or read book The Missions and Missional Purpose of Ephesians written by Timothy A. van Aarde and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2023-01-12 with total page 411 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The purpose of the letter to the Ephesians is unknown. The book suggests that the purpose of Ephesians is about missions and being missional. The author of Ephesians committed the task of missions to the church. The author located the mission of the church in the redemptive plan of God. The redemptive “plan” (oikonomia) of God consists of historical epochs of missions: the mission of Israel, the mission of Christ, the mission of the disciples, the mission of the apostles, and the mission of the church. The term “missional” has been used ambiguously. The existence of a distinction between the mission of the church and missional church is demonstrated, and both expressions of mission are grounded in the biblical text of Ephesians. The mission of the church is grounded in an exposition of Eph 1–3, and the missional church is grounded in an exposition of Eph 4–6. The author of the letter intended for the mission to the nations to be continued by the church (this is the mission of the church). He intended for the members of the church to continue to reach out to their local community (this is expressed by the missional church). The mission of the church has been grounded in the Great Commission. The missional church is grounded in the values, morals, and lifestyle principles set out in Eph 4–6.

Book Living to the Praise of God s Glory

Download or read book Living to the Praise of God s Glory written by Mark A. Simon and published by Wipf and Stock Publishers. This book was released on 2021-05-24 with total page 189 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The letter to the Ephesians is missional to its core. It effectively exhorts its readers to understand, support, and participate in God's mission to rescue humanity and all creation from the damage and distortion of sin, and so bring about a renewed creation filled with God's glorious fullness. Working at the creative intersection of biblical studies and missiology, this study adopts a missional hermeneutic to overcome the scholarly neglect of mission in Ephesians. The book systematically explores each passage in Ephesians, delving into the characterization of God and his mission; allusions to Old Testament missional texts in Ephesians; and the portrayal of the apostle Paul and believers as participants in God's mission. A multi-faceted vision of mission emerges which encompasses God's actions in salvation history; the church as mediator of God's glory, reconciliation and grace to the nations; prayer; ethical witness; and verbal proclamation of the gospel. Reading Ephesians through this missional lens yields fresh insights into its purpose and context, and the richness of its portrait of mission.
