She soon learns that the path she has chosen is not for the faint-hearted. Almost immediately, her ideals are shattered, and she realises that, to survive, she must emulate the treachery of those around her to keep her job and to save face with those back home who had little confidence that she could or should have left in the first place. In the depths of politics, she finds that she has entered a vipers’ den, full of self-serving careerists, where selfish endeavours thrive, and are indeed encouraged. She becomes a target of the powerful and faces an unimaginable ordeal. Through all of this, she finds an unlikely ally in Josh, a career political operator who is himself conflicted and disillusioned. They form an unlikely alliance, providing the support and emotional connection that helps them deal with the many unnerving and at times unimaginable situations in which they come to find themselves.

Book Representing the Rural on the English Stage

Download or read book Representing the Rural on the English Stage written by Gemma Edwards and published by Springer Nature. This book was released on 2023-06-05 with total page 210 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book explores how the English rural has been represented in contemporary theatre and performance. Exploring a range of plays, forms, and contexts of theatre production, Representing the Rural celebrates the lively engagement with rurality on English stages since 2000, constituting the first full study of theatrical representations of rural life. Interdisciplinary in its approach, this book draws on political philosophy and cultural geography in its definitions of rurality and Englishness, and works with key theoretical concepts such as nostalgia and ethnonationalism. Covering a range of perspectives from the country garden in Mike Bartlett’s Albion to agricultural labour in Nell Leyshon’s The Farm, the enclosure acts in D.C. Moore’s Common to Black rural history in Testament’s Black Men Walking, the book shows how theatre and performance can open up different ways of reading rural geographies, histories, and lives. While Representing the Rural is aimed at students and researchers of theatre and performance, its interdisciplinary scope means that it has wider appeal to other disciplines in the arts and humanities, including geography, politics, and history.

Book Efficiency Instead of Justice

Download or read book Efficiency Instead of Justice written by Klaus Mathis and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2009-03-18 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Economic analysis of law is an interesting and challenging attempt to employ the concepts and reasoning methods of modern economic theory so as to gain a deeper understanding of legal problems. According to Richard A. Posner it is the role of the law to encourage market competition and, where the market fails because transaction costs are too high, to simulate the result of competitive markets. This would maximize economic efficiency and social wealth. In this work, the lawyer and economist Klaus Mathis critically appraises Posner’s normative justification of the efficiency paradigm from the perspective of the philosophy of law. Posner acknowledges the influences of Adam Smith and Jeremy Bentham, whom he views as the founders of normative economics. He subscribes to Smith’s faith in the market as an ideal allocation model, and to Bentham’s ethical consequentialism. Finally, aligning himself with John Rawls’s contract theory, he seeks to legitimize his concept of wealth maximization with a consensus theory approach. In his interdisciplinary study, the author points out the possibilities as well as the limits of economic analysis of law. It provides a method of analysing the law which, while very helpful, is also rather specific. The efficiency arguments therefore need to be incorporated into a process for resolving value conflicts. In a democracy this must take place within the political decision-making process. In this clearly written work, Klaus Mathis succeeds in making even non-economists more aware of the economic aspects of the law.

Book Selfish Mind Slavish Body

Download or read book Selfish Mind Slavish Body written by Laljee Verma and published by Hay House, Inc. This book was released on 2022-11-08 with total page 203 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Every thought, sensation, observation, and emotion is mediated by the mind, and it underpins everything that constitutes the perceived reality. But despite an exponential growth in our understanding of the mind, accounting for its nature and implications remain elusive. Selfish Mind, Slavish Body is an enlightening odyssey that investigates the fundamental nature of mind, individuality, and the self. The book distils the wisdom from both, the Eastern and Western religions, teachings of great philosophers, and profound insights from contemporary science into a singular, comprehensive source. The strength of the book lies in its attempt to simplify and unite the diverse viewpoints and conceptions from various fields. Some of the key concepts addressed in the book include: • The religious, cultural, and environmental influences that shape our perception of the world and self-identity. • The relationship between the conscious mind and the physical brain. • The conjunction between mind and the material world. • The intricacies of consciousness, subconsciousness, and ego. To put it succinctly, Selfish Mind, Slavish Body is an ambitious and creative endeavour that provides a fresh perspective on the architecture of self to uncover and understand what really resides behind what we call ‘I’.

Book Economic Analysis in Talmudic Literature

Download or read book Economic Analysis in Talmudic Literature written by Barry Gordon and published by BRILL. This book was released on 2022-07-04 with total page 174 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This lucidly written study is unique in that there is no book extant by an economic historian that discusses Talmudic economics in the light of modern economics. Its major focus is on the intricate debates, statements and principles that were forged by the Talmudic Rabbis. This ancient storehouse of learning includes a wealth of economic knowledge of modern sophistication. The book taps these "economic treasures" by way of analytic inquiry. The authors, both economic historians and economists, through their study of the original dialectics in the Talmud, were able to discern a wide range of macro- and micro-economic ideas of major significance. These concepts when viewed from either a contemporary or a modern perspective, display an extraordinary degree of insight and sophistication. Indeed, sections of the Talmud and the reflections of subsequent commentators on those passages, embody a wealth of economic thought that was later to become significant in the reasoning of political economists, or of their professional academic successors.
