Book A Self consistent Approach to Anomalous Resistivity Applied to Theta Pinch Experiments

Download or read book A Self consistent Approach to Anomalous Resistivity Applied to Theta Pinch Experiments written by Paulett C. Liewer and published by . This book was released on 1973 with total page 0 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A theoretical model of magnetic pulse propagation in collisionless plasmas is derived starting from the Vlasov equation. The model consists of a set of fluid equations which include the effects of turbulence self-consistently through "anomalous" transport terms which evolve in space and time as instabilities develop and as the macroscopic plasma parameters change. Results from numerical integration of these equations explain most of the phenomena of a theta pinch experiment with no initial magnetic field and with small pulsed fields. There was similar agreement with the gross penetration times and effects of changing density in theta pinch experiments with initial bias fields and large pulsed fields. Probable causes of the remaining differences are discussed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The emergence over the past several years of space plasma simula tions as a distinct field of endeavor, rather than simply the somewhat startling offspring of plasma physics, computer simulations and space observations, has necessitated a concentrated effort at interdigitat ing its parent and component fields. After several years of working the benefits of a well-defined interactive community of those without working in the field, a group of those who had gained greatly from setting up joint research projects and other lines of communication, arranged to further these gains by setting up the First International School for Space Simulations, which was organized by Kyoto University and held in Kyoto, Japan in November 1982. Its unqualified success led to the organization of the second such School, this time by the University of California, Los Angeles, and held in Kapaa, Kauai, Hawaii. The Second International School for Space Simulations drew some 175 attendees from around the world; the distribution of attendees approached the targeted equal representation by established investi gators and graduate students/beginning investigators. This strong attendance by graduate students and beginning investigators was due to the generous support of a number of funding agencies from the United States and Japan as well as international scientific organizations.

Book Physics of Collisionless Shocks

Download or read book Physics of Collisionless Shocks written by André Balogh and published by Springer Science & Business Media. This book was released on 2013-01-04 with total page 503 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The present book provides a contemporary systematic treatment of shock waves in high-temperature collisionless plasmas as are encountered in near Earth space and in Astrophysics. It consists of two parts. Part I develops the complete theory of shocks in dilute hot plasmas under the assumption of absence of collisions among the charged particles when the interaction is mediated solely by the self-consistent electromagnetic fields. Such shocks are naturally magnetised implying that the magnetic field plays an important role in their evolution and dynamics. This part treats subcritical shocks which dissipate flow energy by generating anomalous resistance or viscosity. The main emphasis is, however, on super-critical shocks where the anomalous dissipation is insufficient to retard the upstream flow. These shocks, depending on the direction of the upstream magnetic field, are distinguished as quasi-perpendicular and quasi-parallel shocks which exhibit different behaviours, reflecting particles back upstream and generating high electromagnetic wave intensities. Particle acceleration and turbulence at such shocks become possible and important. Part II treats planetary bow shocks and the famous Heliospheric Termination shock as examples of two applications of the theory developed in part I.

Book Reconnection of Magnetic Fields

Download or read book Reconnection of Magnetic Fields written by J. Birn and published by Cambridge University Press. This book was released on 2007-01-04 with total page 302 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The reconnection of magnetic fields is one of the most fascinating processes in plasma physics, responsible for phenomena such as solar flares and magnetospheric substorms. The concept of reconnection has developed through recent advances in exploring the magnetospheres of the Sun and Earth through theory, computer simulations and spacecraft observations. The great challenge in understanding it stems from balancing the large volumes of plasma and magnetic fields involved with the energy release with the physical mechanism which relies on the strongly localized behavior of charged particles. This book, edited by and with contributions from leading scientists in the field, provides a comprehensive overview of recent theoretical and observational findings concerning the physics of reconnection and the complex structures that may give rise to, or develop from, reconnection. It is intended for researchers and graduate students interested in the dynamics of plasmas.
