Download or read book Manteca written by Melinda Pacheco Patrick and published by Arcadia Publishing. This book was released on 2019 with total page 128 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In the heart of California's Central Valley, immigrants arrived in earnest on the heels of the Gold Rush, ranching and farming the land, including the "Father of Manteca," Joshua Cowell, who traversed the Sierras on foot in 1863. Although the town was originally known as Cowell Station, the name Monteca (adapted from the Spanish word for butter) was proposed to distinguish the railroad stop and celebrate the dairy industry. The first tickets printed by the railroad labeled the town as "Manteca"--the Spanish word for lard. Manteca is known for one of the oldest landmarks in the county, East Union Cemetery (established in 1872); the family-owned and -operated Delicato Winery (established in 1924); and notable figures such as baseball great Milo Candini and Rep. John J. McFall. Today, Manteca boasts a population of 80,000; growth has been stimulated over the last 40 years by commuters who work in the Bay Area or Sacramento in exchange for life in a smaller community. This "Family City" is home to Big League Dreams, Bass Pro Shop, and the future Great Wolf Lodge, which will bring back waterslides to Manteca!

Download or read book Obscene in the Extreme written by Rick Wartzman and published by PublicAffairs. This book was released on 2009-09-01 with total page 319 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Few books have caused as big a stir as John Steinbeck's The Grapes of Wrath, when it was published in April 1939. By May, it was the nation's number one bestseller, but in Kern County, California -- the Joads' newfound home -- the book was burned publicly and banned from library shelves. Obscene in the Extreme tells the remarkable story behind this fit of censorship. When W. B. "Bill" Camp, a giant cotton and potato grower, presided over its burning in downtown Bakersfield, he declared: "We are angry, not because we were attacked but because we were attacked by a book obscene in the extreme sense of the word." But Gretchen Knief, the Kern County librarian, bravely fought back. "If that book is banned today, what book will be banned tomorrow?" Obscene in the Extreme serves as a window into an extraordinary time of upheaval in America -- a time when, as Steinbeck put it, there seemed to be "a revolution . . . going on."

Download or read book Trout and Salmon of North America written by Robert Behnke and published by Simon and Schuster. This book was released on 2010-07-06 with total page 376 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This beautiful and definitive guide brings together the world's lead leading expert on North American trout and salmon, Robert Behnke, and the foremost illustrator in the field, Joseph Tomelleri. North America is graced with the greatest diversity of trout and salmon on earth. From tiny brook trout in mountain streams of the Northeast, to cutthroat trout in the rivers of the Rockies, to Chinook salmon of the Pacific, the continent is home to more than 70 types of trout and salmon. How this came to be, how they are related, and what makes them unique -- and so breathtaking -- is the story of Trout and Salmon of North America. The more than 100 illustrations of trout and salmon by Joseph Tomelleri showcased here exhibit a genius for detail, coloration, and proportion. Each portrait is made from field notes, streamside observations, photographs, and specimens collected by the artist. The result is a set of the most accurate and stunning illustrations of fish ever created. Robert Behnke has distilled 50 years of his research and writing about trout and salmon in completing this book. No one understands better than Behnke the diversity and conservation issues concerning these fishes or communicates so lucidly the biological wonders and complexities of their particular beauty. Also included are more than 40 richly detailed maps that clearly show the ranges of populations of trout and salmon throughout North America. An irresistible delight for anyone who appreciates natural history, Trout and Salmon of North America is a master guide to the natural elegance of our native fishes.
