Download or read book The Solo English Cantatas and Italian Odes of Thomas A Arne written by Paul F. Rice and published by Cambridge Scholars Publishing. This book was released on 2020-01-08 with total page 259 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This study examines Thomas Arne’s solo cantatas and Italian odes from musical, literary and social perspectives. Arne composed these works between 1740 and 1774. As such, they provide a means of evaluating the evolving aspects of his musical style throughout his compositional career. The Italian odes have been little-studied, but provide an important gloss on Charles Burney’s comments on Arne’s inability to set the Italian language. Study of the cantata texts that Arne set reveals that they are often pastiches which make use of the words of William Congreve, Alexander Pope, Christopher Smart and others. The resulting process of adaptation and recombination re-contextualizes the borrowed material, resulting in differing emphases and changed meanings. Arne was restricted in his career opportunities because of his Catholic faith. The cantata genre provided Arne with an important creative outlet in the hedonistic atmosphere of the concerts of London’s pleasure gardens.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: High schools that do not need (or are unable to afford) the 10-volume New Grove Dictionary of Music and Musicians, on which this volume is based, will find this authoratative (and in some cases, updated) work useful. The 10,000 alphabetically arranged entries, written by subject specialists, cover all areas of music (e.g., composers, instrumentalists, performers, terminology). There are 1,000 entries under names of individual works. The emphasis is on classical music, but some attention is given to rock and popular music. Illustrations include pictures of instruments, diagrams for the symphony orchestra, and music examples.
Download or read book Opera and Song Books Published in England 1703 1726 written by David Hunter and published by OUP/The Bibliographical Society of London. This book was released on 1997 with total page 574 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This bibliography offers descriptions of almost 200 issues of secular voice music published in England, 1703-1726, including works by Giovanni Bononcini, Henry Purcell, John Weldon, Attilio Ariosti and Richard Leveridge. 2296 song first lines are listed and indexed. The books described represent the first extended effort to issue entirely commercial printed versions of musical stage works and they are also the first song books to be printed by engraving on a systematic basis. In addition to clarifying the bibliographic history of the books through examination of 856 copies (92% of those identified), the bibliography tests and extends the standard concepts of bibliographical description. Several new descriptive features are introduced. There are over 200 illustrations of title-pages, frontispieces and musical engraving styles. By permitting access to material that is not currently widely available in print, the bibliography will be of assistance to musicians, music and theatre historians, and literary scholars, as well as to librarians and bibliographers.

Download or read book The Music and History of the Baroque Trumpet Before 1721 written by Don L. Smithers and published by . This book was released on 1988 with total page 380 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This new edition of the definitive work on the history of the baroque trumpet in the 17th and early 18th centuries includes the latest material in the field plus hitherto unpublished sources of trumpet iconography. Smithers surveys the related types of trumpets used from the period of Monteverdi through the era of Bach and Handel. He examines the repertory of trumpet music available before the appearance of Bach s Second Brandenburg Concerto in F Major and provides a detailed analysis of the working conditions of trumpet players in various European countries during this period. The choice of 1721 in this first study of the music, history, and manufacture of the trumpet as it existed before the Industrial Revolution was neither accidental nor arbitrary. The earliest and only dated source of J. S. Bach s singular Second Brandenburg Concerto in F Major is both a musical and a chronological boundary between two quite different periods in the trumpet s long history. Richly annotated, this work features supplementary appendixes describing surviving sources of music composed originally for the nonmechanical baroque trumpet as well as current scholarship of note. This edition has twice as many photographs as the original printing, many reproduced for the first time."
