Book A Selection of Cases From the State Trials Vol 2

Download or read book A Selection of Cases From the State Trials Vol 2 written by John William Bund Willis-Bund and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-14 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Selection of Cases From the State Trials, Vol. 2: Trials for Treason (1660 1678) This volume brings the Trials for Treason down to the end of the Popish Plot and the dismissal of Chief Justice Scroggs. The trials have been given with very little abbreviation; this has considerably swollen the size of the volume; but having regard to the views put forward in the introduction as to the legality and fairness of the trials - a view so totally opposed to the one usually accepted - it would be most unfair to omit the observations of the Judges during the progress of the trials. As no person can get a fair idea of these trials without reading them at length, it was thought better, even at the risk of increasing the bulk of the book, to give the trials as fully as possible. Though it was absolutely impotent when it confronted men in high places, such as Aaron Burr, who killed Hamilton, and Senator Benton, who killed Lucas. This medieval custom (which was not without its good side, as was pointed out by counsel in the Trial of Wilkin son, 1 Am. St. Tr.) died a natural death in the United States about the middle of the nineteenth century, not on account of legislative enactments, but because pub lic opinion came at last, with practical unanimity, to condemn it.
