Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Selection From the Poems of William Morris Escaping from this golden thraldom they regain their ship, and after many dangers and privations are driven by the wind to an island inhabited by deseen dants of the ancient Greeks, who have preserved their old worship and their Old freedom. Here the weary wanderers of the main are hospitably received, and here they resolve to dwell in peace, forgetful of their vain search for the earthly paradise. At the beginning and the middle of every month the elders of the people and their guests meet together to while away the time with song and friendly converse. The islanders relate the traditions Of their Grecian home, the mariners relate the sagas of the North, and Laur ence, a Swabian priest who had joined the Norsemen in their quest, contributes the legends of Tannhauser and Of the ring given to Venus by the Roman youth. Here then there is full scope for the quaint beauty of romantic classicism and for the weird glamour of northern myth. Without encroaching upon the field Of criticism proper the writer may state that, in his opinion, amongst the classic tales none is more grace ful and finished than The Golden Apples, and amongst the northern none more grandly developed and more epical in the strict sense of the word than The Lovers of Gudrnn based upon the Icelandic Lax daela saga. The latter, unfortunately, cannot find a place in this volume for reasons of space. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Morris: Poet, Artist, Socialist; A Selection From His Writings Together With a Sketch of the Man The comparatively small body of revolutionary Socialists in England derive much of their importance from the fact that they have at their head a man of great genius in the person of Mr. William Morris - "poet, artist, agitator" - who has devoted his splendid gifts to the service of the Socialist Cause. In which of his many spheres of activity Mr. Morris has exercised the widest influence it would be hard to say; but it is as the sturdy Socialist lecturer who may be seen any Sunday during the summer months haranguing a crowd in one or another of the open spaces of London, that he is dearest to the "Common People" of the great metropolis. But his work is of far more than mere local interest: wherever his earnest zeal for human well-being becomes known, there he is sure to have many ardent admirers. I was, therefore, very glad when the editor of this series asked me to compile for it a volume containing a selection from Mr. Morris's writings; for I felt that the influence of such a writer upon those earnest men and women who are to-day, in this country, studying the social question, could not be other than beneficent. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Poems of William Morris In 1860, Morris built for himself Red House, near Upton, in Kent. His contempt for modern designs was a serious bar to the work of procuring furniture for his home, and led to the establishment of the firm of Morris Cc., in April, 1861. Rossetti and Peter Paul Mar shall, designers, and Morris, burne-jones, Ford Madox Brown, Webb, and Faulkner, craftsmen, were the members of the firm, and in the beginning did most of the work themselves. Besides the production of furni ture for Red House, church decoration was their main employment. They occupied the old rooms at Red Lion Square, and advertised themselves as Fine Art Work men in Painting, Carving, Furniture and the Metals. At Red House, Morris lived for four happ ears. Two children were born here, Jane Alice in 1g615: and May in 1862. During these years, he projected a cycle of poems upon the Trojan War, and wrote a great part of it, but it was never finished, and none of the single poems were published. The business of the firm increased. Morris furnished most of the capital and was, from the start, the most active of the partners. In 1865, he took a house in Queen Square, Bloomsbury, and moved thither both his family and his business. Book William Morris Classic Reprint

Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Morris I Have to thank many friends of William Morris, and some of his most intimate friends, for the kind help they have given me in attempting to suggest the portrait of so many-sided a man. The essential factor in all the branches of his activity was undoubtedly the poetic spirit in him. In all things he was a poet - in words, in tapestry, in socialism; and, by regarding him primarily as a poet, according to the scope of a volume in this series, it is possible to preserve the right unity of impression. It would have been easy to load the book with an imposing bulk of irrelevant letters and anecdotes. But it is hoped that economy of the reader's attention will be counted in this case for a virtue. Even Mr. Mackail has blurred the effect of his invaluable biography of Morris by irrelevancies. One really fails to understand the lapse of so careful and scholarly a writer into an elaborate comparison between William Morris and Dr. Samuel Johnson - a comparison, a suggested close likeness, not a contrast! It not only blurs the picture, but with many of Morris's old friends is simply a matter for unmixed mirth. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from William Morris, Poet, Craftsman, Socialist The personal life of William Morris is already known to us through Mr. Mackail's admirable biography as fully, probably, as we shall ever know it. My own endeavour has been to present a picture of Morris's busy career perhaps not less vivid for the absence of much detail, and showing only the man and his work as they appeared to the outer public. I have used as a basis for my narrative, the volumes by Mr. Mackail; William Morris, Us Art, his Writings, and his Public Life, by Aymer Vallance; The Books of William Morris, by H. Buxton Forman; numerous articles in periodicals, and Morris's own varied works. I wish to express my indebtedness to Mr. Bulkley of 42 East 14th Street, New York City, for permission to reproduce a number of Morris patterns in his possession, notably a fragment of the St. James's wallpaper. Book William Morris A Critical Study

Download or read book William Morris A Critical Study written by John Drinkwater and published by BoD – Books on Demand. This book was released on 2020-10-01 with total page 101 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: To the isolation, the loneliness, of the poet, criticism is apt to give far less than due heed. At a time when literature is daily becoming more responsive to the new spirit which we call Democracy, such a complaint may seem to be reactionary in temper, and some explanation may be made by way of defence against any such possible charge. Nothing is more disastrous to a poet than that he should dissociate his art from the life of the world; until the conflict and destiny of humanity have become the subjects of his contemplation he cannot hope to bring to his creation that vitality which alone makes for permanence. Ultimately it is the great normal life of mankind which is immortal, and the perishable things are the grotesque, the odd, the experiences which are incomplete because they are unrelated to the general experience.
