Book excerpt: Disaster Technology: An Annotated Bibliography presents an annotated bibliography of disaster technology. The references are arranged in the following sections: relief organization, medical aspects (planning, general, nutrition), sociological aspects, and physical aspects (general, earthquakes). The abstracts are arranged alphabetically by author's name in each section. Some of the controversial issues and the areas related to disaster technology are reviewed. This volume consists of seven chapters, the first of which introduces the reader to general aspects of relief work especially international disaster aid. Logistic, administrative, political, and economic factors are highlighted. The next three chapters deal with medical aspects of relief work and cover hospital disaster planning and surgical triage, medical problems arising from disasters, and nutritional problems of relevance to development as well as to disasters. Attention then turns to sociological studies of disasters that have been carried out in industrialized societies in general and America in particular. Some work on psychological and psychiatric factors is considered. The chapters on physical aspects of disaster relief includes literature on public health engineering, design for disaster (including emergency shelter), and prevention and warning techniques. Earthquakes are considered separately in the final chapter. This book is written to supply relief agencies with information on the published and unpublished literature available concerning technical aspects of disaster relief and prevention with special emphasis on developing countries. It is also intended to provide those involved in relevant research with information on disaster topics from other disciplines.

Book Systems Approach to Management of Disasters

Download or read book Systems Approach to Management of Disasters written by Slobodan P. Simonovic and published by John Wiley & Sons. This book was released on 2011-03-21 with total page 356 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The main goal of this text is to introduce the systems approach to disasters management community as an alternative approach that can provide support for interdisciplinary activities involved in the management of disasters. The systems approach draws on the fields of operations research and economics to create skills in solving complex management problems. The text is organized into four parts. Part I provides an introductory discussion of disaster management including an overview of the main terms used. Part II is devoted to the introduction of systems theory, mathematical formalization and classification of methods. The material presented in this section should be of practical relevance during the process of selecting an appropriate tool for the solution of a problem. Part III is technical in nature, providing a simulation approach and a detailed description of system dynamics simulation. This section details two areas of application: flood evacuation simulation, and disaster risk assessment. Part IV ends with a chapter covering steps to improve disaster management. Finally parts of the book can be used as a tool for specialized short courses for practitioners. For example a course on 'System analysis for emergency management optimization' could be based on Chapters 3, 4 and parts of Chapter 6. Included in the book is a CD with three computer programs Vensim PLE, LINPRO, and COMPRO. Vensim PLE (Personal Learning Edition) is state-of-the-art simulation software used for the implementation of system dynamics simulation. The other two programs are: LINPRO, a linear programming optimization tool; and COMPRO, for the implementation of the multi-objective analysis tool of compromise programming.

Book Operational Research for Emergency Planning in Healthcare Volume 2

Download or read book Operational Research for Emergency Planning in Healthcare Volume 2 written by Navonil Mustafee and published by Springer. This book was released on 2016-01-26 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: This book presents a selection of studies that have applied Operational Research methods to improve emergency planning in healthcare, to include both A&E and public health emergencies like epidemic and natural disasters. The studies have delved into qualitative Operational Research like Problem Structuring, Critical Systems Thinking, Soft Systems Methodology, and Qualitative System Dynamics, and also quantitative techniques such as Monte Carlo Simulation, Discrete-event Simulation, and System Dynamics. These techniques have been applied for review and assessment of emergency services, for policy formulation and for facilitating broader public engagement in emergency preparedness and response. Furthermore, this book presents rigorous reviews on the applications of Operational Research in the wider healthcare context. This volume focuses mainly on emergency planning at the strategic level, whereas volume 1 focuses on planning at the operational level. The OR Essentials series presents a unique cross-section of high quality research work fundamental to understanding contemporary issues and research across a range of Operational Research (OR) topics. It brings together some of the best research papers from the highly respected journals of the Operational Research Society, also published by Palgrave Macmillan.
