Download or read book The Anthropological History of Europe Classic Reprint written by John Beddoe and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-22 with total page 206 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Anthropological History of Europe This new edition of The Anthropological History of Europe seems to be called for not only by the exhaustion of the earlier one, but by the lapse of time (twenty years) since the delivery of the Rhind Lectures of 1891, during which period the limits of what may fairly be termed history have been pushed back in some parts of Europe by hundreds or even thousands of years, and the views I origin ally expressed on some parts of the subject have either been confirmed or rendered more problem atical. I have endeavoured therefore to bring the volume up to date, but have avoided entering on the discussion of such subjects as pygmies and steatopygous men in Europe, of which we as yet know little, and which must as yet be excluded from the domain of history. All academic levels/libraries.” Choice “This important collection challenges all anthropologists to re-examine the importance of European perspectives on the most provocative debates of our time. It transcends regional interests to highlight the complex intellectual landscape of our field.” Tracey Heatherington, University of Wisconsin, Milwaukee “This significant volume critically interrogates assumptions about Europe as an idea and a place for research. It provides fresh perspectives on the past and future of anthropological studies of Europe.” Deborah Reed-Danahay, SUNY at Buffalo, President of the Society for the Anthropology of Europe A Companion to the Anthropology of Europe offers a survey of contemporary Europeanist anthropology and European ethnology, and a guide to emerging trends in this geographical field of research. Utilizing diverse approaches to the anthropological study of Europe, Kockel, Nic Craith, and Frykman provide a synthesis of the different traditions and contemporary practices. Investigating the subject both geographically and thematically, the companion covers key topics such as location, heritage, experience, and cultural practices. Written by leading international scholars in the field, the volume constitutes the first authoritative guide for researchers, instructors, and students of anthropology and European studies.

Book The Scope and Content of the Science of Anthropology

Download or read book The Scope and Content of the Science of Anthropology written by Juul Dieserud and published by . This book was released on 2015-07-09 with total page 222 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from The Scope and Content of the Science of Anthropology: Historical Review, Library Classification and Select, Annotated Bibliography; With a List of the Chief Publications of Leading Anthropological Societies and Museums The present work is an outgrowth of an earlier effort to alleviate the worries and perplexities haunting the classifier of books as well as the amateur scientist, taking up this most unsettled and vaguely limited field of study. As far back as 1894, while assistant in the Field Columbian Museum Library it fell to my lot to take part in the classification of its very handsome collection of anthropological literature, and since that time the subject has never been entirely out of my mind. Three years later, when appointed Librarian, I undertook a thorough revision of the classification, and in 1898 read a paper on the subject in the Chicago Library Club, a brief extract being printed in the Library Journal of the same year as well as in Public Libraries. Two years later joining the staff of the National Library, as a catalogue reviser, it became my duty to assign subject headings to its collection of anthropological literature in connection with the new catalogue, and also to keep track of current books in that line, with a view to recommend new purchases. I soon found out that my classification had been prepared too hastily and more especially that its claims for the new science were too sweeping, viewed not only from the standpoint of the classifier of a universal library but even from that of the cautious, broad-minded specialist. I had evidently followed authorities that of late have been justly criticized for their aggressive zeal in encroaching upon the legitimate field of neighboring sciences. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from History and Ethnology IT is the aim of this essay to show the importance of ethnology, and especially of recent develop ments of that science, to history. During the last ten years there has been in progress, rudely hindered but not stopped by the war, a movement which has brought the two disciplines into much closer relationship than would have been possible under the conditions which guided the study of ethnology twenty or thirty years ago. At this more remote period anthropology - I use the term anthropology advisedly - was wholly under the dominance of a crude evolutionary standpoint. The aim of the anthropologist was to work out a scheme of human progress according to which language, social organisation, religion, and material arts had developed through the action of certain principles or laws. It was assumed that the manifold peoples of the earth represented stages in this process of evolution, and it was supposed that by the comparative study of the culture of these different peoples it would be possible to formulate the laws by which the process of evolu tion had been directed and governed. It was. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Find more at www.forgottenbooks.com This book is a reproduction of an important historical work.
