Download or read book The Wilderness the Nation and the Electronic Era written by Elmer J. O'Brien and published by Scarecrow Press. This book was released on 2009-07-29 with total page 688 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The Wilderness, the Nation, and the Electronic Era: American Christianity and Religious Communication 1620-2000: An Annotated Bibliography contains over 2,400 annotations of books, book chapters, essays, periodical articles, and selected dissertations dealing with the various means and technologies of Christian communication used by clergy, churches, denominations, benevolent associations, printers, booksellers, publishing houses, and individuals and movements in their efforts to disseminate news, knowledge, and information about religious beliefs and life in the United States from colonial times to the present. Providing access to the critical and interpretive literature about religious communication is significant and plays a central role in the recent trend in American historiography toward cultural history, particularly as it relates to numerous collateral disciplines: sociology, anthropology, education, speech, music, literary studies, art history, and technology. The book documents communication shifts, from oral history to print to electronic and visual media, and their adaptive uses in communication networks developed over the nation's history. This reference brings bibliographic control to a large and diverse literature not previously identified or indexed.

Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: 'there does not remain a document upon the beginnings in any part of the world, of such immense importance' - The New England Historical Register On April 8th, 1630, John Winthrop and his seven hundred fellow travelers began their voyage to start a new life in the wilderness of North America. Arriving on the eastern seaboard in June they eventually decided to base their Massachusetts Bay Colony around Boston, where Winthrop would build his house and aid in the building of their settlement. Over the course of the next ten years a further twenty-thousand immigrants arrived in New England and established themselves under the leadership of the colony. Despite the fact that these Puritans had escaped the religious persecution they had suffered in England, their lives in the Americas were frequently plagued with disease, crop failures and conflicts with the natives. Yet, the Massachusetts Bay Colony survived and thrived through the early seventeenth century. Winthrop, who became governor of the colony three times, records fascinating details of colonial life, from minor everyday moments through to the wider religious and political events that shaped their new world in the Americas. Winthrop's Journal is essential reading for anyone interested in the history of New England and how the early settlers of America survived their first trials and tribulations. John Winthrop (12 January 1587 - 26 March 1649) was an English Puritan lawyer and one of the leading figures in founding the Massachusetts Bay Colony, the second major settlement in New England, following Plymouth Colony. Winthrop led the first large wave of immigrants from England in 1630 and served as governor for 12 of the colony's first 20 years. Winthrop kept a journal of his life and experiences, starting with the voyage across the Atlantic and continuing through his time in Massachusetts, originally written in three notebooks. The first two notebooks were published in 1790 by Noah Webster. The third notebook was long thought lost but was rediscovered in 1816, and the complete journals were published in 1825 and 1826 by James Savage as The History of New England from 1630-1649. By John Winthrop, Esq. First Governor of the Colony of the Massachusetts Bay.

Book The History of New England from 1630 to 1649

Download or read book The History of New England from 1630 to 1649 written by John Winthrop and published by Genealogical Publishing Com. This book was released on 2003 with total page 1044 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: "What a combination--John Winthrop, our first source on the early history of New England, and James Savage, the leading name in New England genealogy. "Savage's Edition of Winthrop's Journal," as this work is usually referred to, was inspired by the discovery of a third part (manuscript) of Winthrop's History of New England in the year 1816. Mr. Savage, a distinguished member of the Massachusetts Historical Society and the author of the seminal Genealogical Dictionary of New England, was assigned the task of transcribing the newly discovered manuscript and integrating it with the previously published pages of Winthrop's Journal. Applying his customary acumen to the task, Savage completed his transcription and collation of the History of New England in time for an 1825 publication, adding his own learned annotations about the men, women, and events Winthrop referred to, yielding a work perhaps twice as long as the original journal"--Publisher website (January 2009).
