Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Algebra: Second Course Tms volume has been prepared as a companion to the first course in elementary algebra, written by the same authors. As its title suggests, the second course is designed for students who have had the equivalent of the work given in the first course. The first course gives one year's work, including the topics now generally taught in the first year of the average high school. The second course reviews the topics treated in the first course, amplifies the treatment in the latter by the addition of new matter where necessary, and extends the course to include all topics required for admission to college. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Algebra: Second Year Course This book contains a brief review of the fundamental opera tions of algebra followed by a thorough presentation of the topics usually included in the work of the third half year. The material is so arranged that the choice of topics for review or advance study may be easily made. The book contains not only a large number of practical problems but also practical applications of graphs. Material for drill in the manipulation of exponents and radicals will be found in Chapter VII. Great pains have been taken to make the subject of logarithms accessible to beginners. The most difficult part in learning to compute with logarithms is the process of interpolation. Of the various arrangements of logarithmic tables which have been suggested, we have selected the one which renders interpolation easiest. The chapter on logarithms is introduced earlier than usual, on account of the great practical importance of the subject. If desired, it can be taken up later, after Chapter VI. The concept of a function does not receive isolated and abstract treatment; it is pre sented as a fundamental idea in proportion, variation, and graphics. Its connection with problems of everyday life is firmly established. The aims of the First Year Book have been kept in view in the preparation of this text. Emphasis is thrown upon clear ness of exposition and the use of expressions which recall the axiomatic processes involved. Continued stress has been laid upon oral exercises. Several of the practical problems given in the text were suggested by the perusal of an English book, T. Percy Nunn's Exercises in Algebra (including Trigonometry), Part I, 1913. Book A Second Course in Elementary Algebra

Download or read book A Second Course in Elementary Algebra written by J. W. A. Young and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-06-02 with total page 229 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Second Course in Elementary Algebra The material in this volume is prepared for the use of pupils who have done a year's work in Elementary Algebra. Many high schools divide their Algebra work into two courses separated by some work in Geometry and elementary science. These schools often find it more convenient and economical to use two books in Algebra, one for the first course and another for the second. The authors' First Course in Elementary Algebra is planned for first-year work and this book is planned for the second-year work. The first six chapters are a review and extension of the topics of the First Course. The chapter on logarithms is new in name only, because in theory it is an extension of the subject of exponents. The remainder of the volume treats the usual topics, Equations, Proportion, Variation and Series, supplemented by problems applying Algebra to Geometry. Throughout the treatment the authors have constantly kept in mind both the logical value and the practical utility of the subject. The logical value of Algebra is of prime importance; hence, the proofs of processes are based upon reasons both correct and satisfying to the mind of the pupil. On the other hand, subtle distinctions and arguments savoring of higher mathematical methods without their true rigor have been avoided. The utility of Algebra is given the emphasis which it so richly deserves. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Elementary Algebra: First Year Course The sign of multiplication (x) is often replaced in algebra by a dot (e), which is written above the line to distinguish it from a decimal point. Thus3 4means3 4. The product of two numbers, one or both of which are' represented by letters, is usually indicated by writing the numbers one after the other without any Sign between them. Thus ab means a x b or a b, 4 c means 4 x e or 4 C. When only one of two numbers is represented by a letter, it is custom ary to write the letter last. Thus we write 4 c, but not 0 4. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Practical Elementary Algebra There is a strong tendency at the present time to favor giving one course in the early part of the high school curriculum, and to supple ment it with another towards the end of it. For such a division of the work, though there is no uniformity, the most recent writers favor end ing the first course with the simplest cases of simultaneous quadratics. Because of this, the matter on qu'adratics is divided into two chapters. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books. Book A Review of Algebra Classic Reprint

Download or read book A Review of Algebra Classic Reprint written by Romeyn Henry Rivenburg and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-03-22 with total page 84 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from A Review of Algebra IN most high schools the course in Elementary Algebra is finished by the end of the second year. By the senior year, most students have forgotten many of the principles, and a thorough review is necessary in order to prepare college candi dates for the entrance examinations and for effective work in the freshman year in college. Recognizing this need, many schools are devoting at least two periods a week for part of the senior year to a review of algebra. For such a review the regular textbook is inadequate. From an embarrassment of riches the teacher finds it laborious to select the proper examples, while the student wastes time in searching for scattered assignments. The object of this book is to conserve the time and effort of both teacher and student, by providing a thorough and effective review that can readily be completed, if need be, in two periods a week for a half year. Each student is expected to use his regular textbook in algebra for reference, as he would use a dictionary, to recall a definition, a rule, or a process that he has forgotten. He should be encouraged to think his way out wherever possible, however, and to refer to the textbook only when forced to do so as a last resort. The definitions given in the General Outline should be reviewed as occasion arises for their use. The whole Outline can be profitably employed for rapid class reviews, by covering the part of the Outline that indicates the answer, the method, the example, or the formula, as the case may be. The whole scheme of the book is ordinarily to have a page of problems represent a day's work. This, of course, does not apply to the Outlines or the few pages of theory, which can be covered more rapidly. By this plan, making only a part of the omissions indicated in the next paragraph, the essentials of the algebra can be readily covered, if need be, in from thirty to thirty-two lessons, thus leaving time for tests, even if only eighteen weeks, of two periods each, are allotted to the course. Book First Course in Algebra Classic Reprint

Download or read book First Course in Algebra Classic Reprint written by Herbert E. Hawkes and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2017-12-15 with total page 526 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from First Course in Algebra The present revision of the Complete School Algebra bears substantially the same relation to the revised First Course and Second Course that the first edition bore to the original texts. In the revision of each of these texts material for which there is no strong demand from teachers has been omitted, and the entire work has been rewritten in the interest of greater simplicity and directness of appeal. The collections of exercises and problems are for the most part new and contain a larger proportion of easy exercises with simple results than the first edition. A striking feature of the revision is the inclusion of a large number of oral exercises in connection with the introduction of each new idea or Operation. It is the object of these exer cises to present the new concept in complete isolation from any complication of notation or technique so that the student becomes familiar with its content and bearing before he is asked to make use of it in written work. These oral exercises may well be taken up when the advance lesson is assigned, so that the pupil may be certain that he understands the idea involved in the new work before he leaves his instructor. Another feature scarcely less important is the character and position of the examples and hints. The aim has been to help the student at the exact point where he needs it and to avoid the insertion of lengthy and difficult solutions before they can be completely understood. The definitions and axioms have been expressed in the simplest language which is consistent with scientific accuracy. Many definitions which are usually found in elementary texts but which do not contribute to the clearness of the subject are omitted. Book excerpt: Excerpt from High School Algebra: Elementary Course Each of these aims leads to the same order of topics, which, however, differs somewhat from the conventional order. If it is admitted that there should be a gradually increasing complexity of forms to be manipulated, it follows that factoring and complicated work in fractions have no proper place in the first half year. This book is arranged so that factoring may begin with the second semester and complicated fractions may come still later. Simple fractions are treated in Chapter V. The pupil is introduced to the algebraic notation by recalling and stating in terms of letters certain rules of arithmetic with which he is already familiar. The simplicity of the algebraic formulas, compared with the arithmetical statement of rules known to the pupil, cannot fail to impress him with the use fulness and power of the subject which he is about to study. This impression will be deepened when, in Chapter VI, rules which caused considerable trouble in arithmetic are derived with the utmost ease by algebraic processes. The study of equations and their uses is naturally the main topic of the Elementary Course. This topic is therefore devel oped early, simple simultaneous equations being completed in Part One, which is intended to be covered in the first half year. Download or read book An Elementary Course of Mathematics written by H. S. Hall and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2018-02-04 with total page 364 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from An Elementary Course of Mathematics: Comprising Arithmetic, Algebra and Euclid The main purpose of this text-book is to provide in a single and inexpensive volume a short course of Arithmetic, Algebra, and Euclid specially adapted to the needs of a large and increasing class of students: namely, those who after leaving school desire to continue their study of Elementary Mathe maties, partly with help derived from evening classes, and partly by means of private work at home. The majority of such students work under somewhat difficult conditions. They have already received a certain training in Arithmetic, but their mathematical education has gone no further; and the problem which meets them is how - with very limited instruction and leisure - to maintain what they have already learned, and at the same time to acquire from the beginning a sound knowledge of Elementary Algebra and Geometry. What is needed by such learners is first of all a course of varied and graduated Exercises in Arithmetic; then a careful exposition of the two new subjects, Algebra and Euclid, arranged and treated in such a way as to smooth the path of a beginner, and to encourage him to overcome difficulties by relying on his own industry and intelligence. These considerations have been kept in View in compiling the following pages. About the Publisher Forgotten Books publishes hundreds of thousands of rare and classic books.
