Book A Season in the Abyss

Download or read book A Season in the Abyss written by Brian Tuohy and published by . This book was released on 2015-09-03 with total page 265 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Football and gambling. The two activities are inseparable. Yet the National Football League states it does not want fans to bet on its games. The league even fought against the state of New Jersey to keep sports gambling illegal. If wagering threatens the league's integrity as it claims, then why does the NFL openly embrace the gambling taking place in fantasy football, and why does it allow teams to license their logos to state lotteries? Is the league clandestinely working with legal and illegal bookies? Are its athletes gambling as well? Why are referees constantly making calls that seem to benefit Las Vegas? And what role do the NFL's broadcast partners play in all of this? Controversial author Brian Tuohy spent the 2014 NFL season doing exactly what it is the league doesn't want its fans doing -- gambling on its sport in all its forms -- to learn the true relationship between the NFL and gambling. No football fan should watch another game without realizing the impact these two entities have on each other.

  • Pages : 723 pages

Download or read book The Abyss written by Max Hastings and published by HarperCollins. This book was released on 2022-10-18 with total page 723 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Bestselling author Max Hastings offers a welcome re-evaluation of one of the most gripping and tense international events in modern history—the Cuban Missile Crisis—providing a people-focused narrative that explores the attitudes and conduct of Russians, Cubans, Americans, and a terrified world that followed each moment as it unfolded. In The Abyss, Max Hastings turns his focus to one of the most terrifying events of the mid-twentieth century—the thirteen days in October 1962 when the world stood on the brink of nuclear war. Hastings looks at the conflict with fresh eyes, focusing on the people at the heart of the crisis—America President John F. Kennedy, Soviet First Secretary Nikita Khrushchev, Cuban Prime Minister Fidel Castro, and a host of their advisors. Combining in-depth research with Hasting’s well-honed insights, The Abyss is a human history that unfolds on a wide, colorful canvas. As the action moves back and forth from Moscow to Washington, DC, to Havana, Hastings seeks to explain, as much as to describe, the attitudes and conduct of the Soviets, Cubans, and Americans, and to recreate the tension and heightened fears of countless innocent bystanders whose lives hung in the balance. Reflecting on the outcome of these events, he reveals how the aftermath of this momentous crisis continues to reverberate today. Powerful, and riveting, filled with compelling detail and told with narrative flair, The Abyss is history at its finest.

  • Pages : 67 pages

Download or read book A Season in Hell written by Arthur Rimbaud and published by BookRix. This book was released on 2019-06-15 with total page 67 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: A Season in Hell is an extended poem written and published by French writer Arthur Rimbaud. The book had a considerable influence on later artists and poets, for example the Surrealists. Henry Miller was important in introducing Rimbaud to America in the sixties. He once attempted an English translation of the book and wrote an extended essay on Rimbaud and A Season in Hell titled The Time of the Assassins. The poem is loosely divided into nine parts, some of which are much shorter than others. They differ markedly in tone and narrative comprehensibility, with some, such as "Bad Blood," 'being much more obviously influenced by Rimbaud's drug use than others, some argue. Academic critics have arrived at many varied and often entirely incompatible conclusions as to what meaning and philosophy may or may not be contained in the text, and will continue to do so.

Book A Season in Hell

  • Author : Arthur Rimbaud
  • Publisher : iUniverse
  • Release : 2004-03-29
  • ISBN : 0595761585
  • Pages : 104 pages

Download or read book A Season in Hell written by Arthur Rimbaud and published by iUniverse. This book was released on 2004-03-29 with total page 104 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Arthur Rimbaud wrote a few pieces that set French poetry aghast around 1873. He'd taken to wandering Europe in lieu of university. His teachers hated him. There was a sort of subtle but perverse defiance to his work. He would create new words to describe the world around him, and produced pages of rhyming Latin verse in his mathematics class while taking notes. For a time he produced Latin homework for his fellow students and appeared, for a time, to raise the general standard. He criticized every popular structural form and his writings provided a new basis for creative literature in Europe. At the age of 21 Rimbaud renounced writing to explore distant countries. In 12 years he passed through almost 28 countries and amassed a small fortune in gold before complications from a gangrenous leg injury led to his untimely death. He became the first European to travel through northern Ethiopia. Confronted in North Africa by an employer, who told him his adolescent prose was not only alive in Europe but launching a career of its own, is quoted as one histrionic outburst. His former employer, Alfred Barley, wrote: [Rimbaud] would never allow me to mention his former literary works. Sometimes I asked him why he didn't take it up again. All I ever got were the usual replies: "Absurd, ridiculous, disgusting, etc."
