Book excerpt: There are few things more intriguing in high energy astrophysics than the study of the highest energy particles in the universe. Where and how these particles achieve their extreme energies is of interest not only to the astrophysicist but also to the particle physicist. At GeV and TeV energies the problem is manageable since the physics is known and the acceleration processes feasible. But the energy spectrum extends to 10(exp 20)Ev and there the problem of their origin is both more difficult and interesting; in fact at these high energies we do not even know what the particles are. The study of the origin and distribution of relativistic particles in the universe has been a challenge for more than 80 years but it is only in recent years that the technology has become available to really address the question. Although something can be learned from studies of composition and energy spectrum, the origins (and thence the acceleration mechanisms) can only come from the direct study of the neutral particle component (in this respect the highest energy particles are effectively neutral since they are virtually undeflected). The feasible channels of investigation are therefore the study of the arrival directions of: (1) TeV photons (covered by the following U.S. experiments: STACEE, Whipple/VERITAS, MILAGRO and, to some extent, by EGRET/GLAST); (2) neutrinos of TeV energy and above (AMANDA/KM3); (3) the highest energy cosmic rays (HiRes, Auger). While these studies represent a form of astronomy they are the astronomy of the extraordinary universe, the universe populated by the most dynamic and physically exciting objects, the universe of the high energy astrophysicist whose cosmic laboratories represent conditions beyond anything that can be duplicated in a terrestrial laboratory. This extraordinary astronomy may say little about the normal evolution of stars and galaxies but it opens windows into cosmic particle acceleration where new and strange physical processes take ...

The success of satellite experiments like NASA's Comp ton Gamma-Ray Observatory and ESA's INTEGRAL mission, as well as of ground-based instruments have open new views into the high-energy Universe. Different classes of cosmic gamma-ray sources have been now detected at different energies, in addition to young radio pulsars and gamma-ray bursts, the classical ones. The new sources include radio quiet pulsars, microquasars, supernova remnants, starburst galaxies, ra dio galaxies, flat-spectrum radio quasars, and BL Lacertae objects. A large number of unidentified sources strongly suggests that this brief enumeration is far from complete. Gamma-ray bursts are now estab lished as extragalactic sources with tremendous energy output. There is accumulating evidence supporting the idea that massive stars and star forming regions can accelerate charged particles up to relativistic ener gies making them gamma-ray sources. Gamma-ray astronomy has also proved to be a powerful tool for cosmology imposing constraints to the background photon fields that can absorb the gamma-ray flux from dis tant sources. All this has profound implications for our current ideas about how particles are accelerated and transported in both the local and distant U niverse. The evolution of our knowledge on the gamma-ray sky has been so fast that is not easy for the non-specialist scientist and the graduate student to be aware of the full potential of this field or to grasp the fundamentals of a given topic in order to attempt some original contribution.

Book excerpt: Very high energy gamma-rays can be used to probe some of the most violent environments in the Universe, such as supernovae and supernovae remnants, pulsar-powered nebulae, and superluminal jets of active galaxies powered by super-massive black holes. The diffuse gamma radiation arising from the interaction of cosmic-ray particles with matter and radiation in the Galaxy is one of the few probes available to study the origin of cosmic-rays, whose origin is still a mystery a century after their discovery. Unlike charged cosmic-ray particles, gamma-ray photons are not bent in galactic and extra-galactic magnetic fields. They are also less easily absorbed by gas and dust in galaxies than light of longer wavelengths. Since there are very few of these photons, detection is done using ground instruments with large sensitive area. The main challenge for such instruments is to distinguish gamma-ray photons from the overwhelming background of hadronic cosmic rays. In this book, a new background rejection technique for the Milagro detector is presented. This new technique resulted in the discovery of three new VHE gamma-ray sources along with diffuse emission of VHE gamma-rays from the Galaxy.

Book excerpt: Over the last several decades, a wealth of observations of gamma-ray emission at TeV energies has increased our understanding of the extreme physical processes happening in our Galaxy. However, fundamental questions remain unanswered. To how high an energy are cosmic rays able to be accelerated in our galaxy, and how does that connect with the features observed in the cosmic-ray energy spectrum such as the "knee'', the "second knee'', and the "ankle''? Answers to these questions can be searched for by extending gamma-ray observations to higher energies. As the only experiment sensitive to PeV gamma rays in the Southern Hemisphere, the IceCube observatory can address these issues from a unique perspective. In this work, gamma-ray candidate events are selected from data observed by the surface and in-ice arrays of the IceCube observatory. This is accomplished by leveraging characteristic properties of gamma-ray induced air showers such as low muonic content and a deep shower maximum. Using five years of data, several searches for gamma-ray emission using unbinned likelihood methods are presented. The results of all searches are consistent with background, resulting in 90% flux upper limits that are the most stringent ever placed on PeV emission. The limits set on PeV gamma-ray point sources constrain, for the first time, the energy extension of a power-law flux for sources observed by HESS to have no break in their energy spectrum at TeV energies. Additionally, the resulting limit set by a search for an angular-integrated diffuse flux from the Galactic plane provides an upper bound useful for constructing Galactic cosmic-ray transport models

The meeting was sponsored by the Scientific Affairs Division of NATO and the University of Durham. It is four years since the first Workshop dedicated to High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy was held at Ootacamund, India. At that meeting the developments in Very High Energy Gamma Ray Astronomy over a period of more than 20 years were reported and the methodology, limitations, improvements and prospects for further progess were discussed. The possible requirement for a follow-up meeting was clear if the optimistic future foreseen for the field at the Ooty meeting was correct. The Durham meeting was suggested to fill this role. Although the arrangements for the Durham meeting were discussed as long ago as 1983 with possible dates in 1984 or 1986, the eventual date in 1986 has proved admirable and has coincided with a time when further advances have been reported. An important feature of the proposal for the Durham meeting was the emphasis on a series of Workshop sessions, the conclusions of each to be summarized by a Rapporteur. The purpose of these sessions was to provide a consensus view of many of the important areas in the field at a time of increasing interest by the rest of the astrophysics community.
