Book excerpt: Presented are the results of a search for direct CP violation in Cabibbo-suppressed decays of D0 to two charged daughters. The analysis described was performed on 2̃30 fb-1 of the BABAR data sample, recorded at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and using the PEP-II electron storage rings. We measure CP asymmetries for decay to the KK and ?? final states, as well as for the branching ratio, and develop a new technique for tagging-efficiency correction using the Cabibbo-favored K? final state. We find some evidence for CP violation in decays to the KK final state and results that suggest CP violation in the ?? final state as well.

For example, it fails to explain why we do not see equal, or almost equal, numbers of particles and their antiparticle partners. To explain this asymmetry requires, among other effects, a mechanism known as charge-parity (CP) violation that causes differences between the rates at which particles and antiparticles decay. CP violation is seen in systems containing bottom and strange quarks, but not in those with up, charm or top quarks. This thesis describes searches for particle-antiparticle asymmetries in the decay rates of charmed mesons. No evidence of CP violation is found. With current sensitivities, an asymmetry large enough to observe probably could not be explained by the Standard Model. Instead an explanation could come from new physics, for example contributions from supersymmetric or other undiscovered heavy particles. In the thesis, the development of new techniques to search for these asymmetries is described. They are applied to data from the LHCb experiment at CERN to make precise measurements of asymmetries in the D^+->K^-K^+pi^+ decay channel. This is the most promising charged D decay for CP violation searches.

While investigations of the K and B systems have and will continue to play a central role in this field of research, in depth examinations of the D mesons sector have yet to be performed with enough precision, leaving a gap in our knowledge. This book describes a search for CP violation in Cabibbo-suppressed neutral D decays to two charged pions or kaons performed using the proton-antiproton collisions recorded at the Fermilab's TeVatron collider by the CDF experiment during February 2002 and January 2010. The result is the current most accurate determination of CP-violating asymmetries in these decays and represents a pioneering measurement of high precision CP violation in the charm sector at hadron colliders that has been of inspiration for the similar studies which are now ongoing at the CERN's Large Hadron Collider.

Book excerpt: Using 385 fb−1 of ee− collision data collected at center-of-mass energies around 10.6 GeV, we search for time-integrated CP violation in the Cabibbo-suppressed decays D°/{bar D}° →?−?+?° and D°/{bar D}° → K−K+?° with both model-independent and model-dependent methods. Measurements of the asymmetries in amplitudes of flavor states and CP eigenstates provide constraints on theories beyond the Standard Model, some of which predict CP violation in amplitudes at the 1% level or higher. We find no evidence of CP violation and hence no conflict with the Standard Model.

The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.

Book excerpt: We search for CP violation in a sample of 4.7 x 104 singly Cabibbo suppressed D0 2!K+ K- [pi]+[pi]- decays and 1.8(2.6) x 104 D(s)+ 2!KS0 K+ [pi]+ [pi]- decays. CP violation is searched for in the difference between the T-odd asymmetries, obtained using triple product correlations, measured for D and D decays. The measured CP violation parameters are AT(D0) = (1.0 ± 5.1(stat) ± 4.4(syst)) x 10-3, AT(D+) = ( -11.96 ± 10.04(stat) ± 4.81(syst)) x 10-3 and AT(Ds+) = ( -13.57 ± 7.67(stat) ± 4.82(syst)) x 10-3. This search for CP violation showed that the T-odd correlations are a powerful tool to measure the CP violating observable AT. The relative simplicity of an analysis based on T-odd correlations and the high quality results that can be obtained, allow to consider this tool as fundamental to search for CP violation in four-body decays. Even if the CP violation has not been found, excluding any New Physics effect to the sensitivity of about 0.5%, it is still worth to search for CP violation in D decays. The high statistics that can be obtained at the LHC or by the proposed high luminosity B-factories, make this topic to be considered in high consideration by experiments such as LHCb, SuperB or SuperBelle. The results outlined in this thesis strongly suggest to include a similar analysis into the Physics program of these experiments.

These results include a measurement of D0 - anti D0 mixing and searches for CP violation in two-body D0 decays, a search for CP violation in the charm decays D" 2!KS0K " and D s" 2!KS0K", KS0[pi]", and a search for direct CP violation in the singly-Cabibbo suppressed D" 2!K+K-[pi]"decays. These studies are based on the fi nal dataset collected by BABAR at the PEP-II B factory at SLAC in the period 1999-2008. No evidence of CP violation is found in these charm decays. The measured mixing parameter yCP = [0.72 " 0.18(stat) " 0.12(syst)]% excludes the no-mixing null hypothesis with a signifi cance of 3.3[sigma].

Book excerpt: Mixing and CP violation (CPV) in the neutral D system were first discussed over thirty years ago but mixing was observed for the first time only very recently. Since then, these observations have been confirmed in other experiments and in other D° decay modes. Unlike the K, B and B{sub s} systems, for which mixing was observed years earlier, the short distance ([Delta]C = 2) amplitude contributing to mixing in the D system arises from box diagrams with down- rather than up-type quarks in the loops. The d and s components are GIM-suppressed, and the b component is suppressed by the small V{sub ub} CKM coupling. In the standard model (SM), therefore, long range, non-perturbative effects, a coherent sum over intermediate states accessible to both D° and {bar D}°, are the main contribution to mixing. These are hard to compute reliably, however. The phenomenon of mixing in neutral meson systems has now been observed in all flavours, but only in the past year in the D° system. The standard model anticipated that, for the charm sector, the mixing rate would be small, and also that CP violation, either in mixing or in direct decay, would be below the present levels of observability. It is hoped that further study of these phenomena might reveal signs of new physics. A review of recently available, experimental results is given.

Book excerpt: Direct CP violation can exist in untagged, neutral B-meson decays to certain self-conjugate, hadronic final states. As a necessary condition, the resonances which appear therein must permit the identification of distinct, CP-conjugate states--in analogy to stereochemistry, we term such states ''CP-enantiomers.'' These states permit the construction of CP-even and CP-odd amplitude combinations and of observables sensitive to their interference, which are non-zero if direct CP violation is present. The decay B 2!??−?°, containing the distinct CP-conjugate states?+?− and?−?+, provides one such example of a CP-enantiomeric pair. We illustrate the possibilities in various multi-particle final states.
