Book excerpt: Fermilab experiments E731, E773, E799, and E832 are a series of experiments to investigate the physics of CP violation, CPT violation, and rare decays of the neutral kaon system. E731 finished data taking in 1988, during past year the full data set analysis was completed and yielded ([var epsilon][prime]/[var epsilon])[sub 2[pi]]=(7.4 [plus minus] 5.2 [stat] [plus minus] 2.9 [syst]) [times] 10[sup [minus]4] . The value favors a high top ark mass value within the Standard Model. E773 tests CPT violation by determining ([Delta][phi])[sub 2[pi]] with an accuracy of about 0.5[sup 0]. Data were taken during the last Fermilab Fixed Target run period between September and November 1991. It is anticipated the data analysis will be finished within a year. E799, with the primary goal of observing direct Cp Violation via searching for the rare decay K[sub L][yields] [pi][sup 0] l [sup +]l[sup [minus]] (where l = e, [mu] [nu]) took test data between November 1991 and January 1992 (Phase 1). Some preliminary results are shown here. E799 (Phase II) and E832 (a follow up experiment of E731) are scheduled to take data after the current Fermilab collider run with a new facility and detector.

Book excerpt: This thesis describes a high-quality, high-precision method for the data analysis of an interesting elementary particle reaction. The data was collected at the Japanese B-meson factory KEKB with the Belle detector, one of the most successful large-scale experiments worldwide. CP violation is a subtle quantum effect that makes the world look different when simultaneously left and right and matter and antimatter are exchanged. This being a prerequisite for our own world to have developed from the big bang, there are only a few experimental indications of such effects, and their detection requires very intricate techniques. The discovery of CP violation in B meson decays garnered Kobayashi and Maskawa, who had predicted these findings as early as 1973, the 2008 Nobel prize in physics. This thesis describes in great detail what are by far the best measurements of branching ratios and CP violation parameters in two special reactions with two charm mesons in the final state. It presents an in-depth but accessible overview of the theory, phenomenology, experimental setup, data collection, Monte Carlo simulations, (blind) statistical data analysis, and systematic uncertainty studies.

Book excerpt: The phenomenon of CP-violation in weak interactions, discovered in 1964 in decays of neutral kaons, receives a simple and elegant explanation in the Standard Model with three generations of quarks. Indeed, in this model the common source of CP-asymmetry phenomena is represented by a simple complex phase in the unitary matrix (the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa matrix) describing the charged weak couplings of the quarks. This simple scheme has never received an accurate validation, because the phenomenological parameters determined from measurements of CP-violation in kaons decays are related to the fundamental parameters of the theory in a complex way, sensitive to large theoretical uncertainties. On the contrary, decays of neutral B mesons like B{sup 0} {yields} J/{psi} K{sub S}{sup 0} represent a unique laboratory to test the predictions of the theory because they are expected to show significant CP-violation effects, the magnitude of which is cleanly related to the Standard Model parameters. Thus experimental facilities have been built with the purpose of performing extensive studies of B decays. The BABAR experiment is operating at one of these facilities, at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center. It is collecting data at the PEP-II asymmetric e{sup +}e{sup -} collider (E{sub e{sup -}} = 9.0 GeV; E{sub e{sup +}} = 3.1 GeV), a high-luminosity accelerator machine (L = 3 x 10{sup 33} cm{sup -2}s{sup -1}). The center-of-mass energy (10.58 GeV) of the e{sup +}e{sup -} system at PEP-II allows resonant production of the {Upsilon}(4S), a b{bar b} bound state, which decays almost exclusively in a B{sup 0}{bar B}{sup 0} or a B{sup +}B{sup -} pair. A high-acceptance detector, projected and built by a wide international collaboration, detects and characterizes the decay products of the B mesons. From the analysis of the data collected during the first two years of operation, the BABAR collaboration has established CP-violation in decays of neutral B mesons at the 4.1{sigma} level. Besides the primary goal of CP-violation studies, the high luminosity of PEP-II, coupled with the high acceptance of the BABAR detector, allows competitive studies of the properties of a wide set of B decay modes. In particular, measurements of non-leptonic decays are extremely useful to understand the dynamics of the non-perturbative strong interactions involved in these processes. In this thesis a study of the non-leptonic decay mode B{sup {+-}} {yields} J/{psi}{pi}{sup {+-}} is presented.

Book excerpt: For a long time after the discovery in 1964, by Christenson, Cronin, Fitch and Turlay, that the long-lived neutral kaon decays both into three and into two pions, which has since been taken as proof of CP violation, successive new and more precise experiments confirmed the original evidence and provided results compatible with a phenomenological description confining the CP violation to the mixing between neutral kaons and antikaons. However the Standard Model, with three generations of quarks, linking as it does CP violation to the presence of a single non trivial phase in the Cabibbo-Kobayashi-Maskawa quark mixing matrix, implies that if CP violation exists at all, then it is a general property of weak interactions, appearing in transitions were amplitudes involving all three quark families interfere with each other, producing effects with a magnitude related to that of the CKM coefficients. This fact has stimulated an impressive amount of theoretical work leading in many cases to precise predictions. This publication reviews the field, from both the theoretical and experimental point of view, while planning for the forthcoming experimentation at LHC and considering possible new facilities for kaon, B meson and neutrino physics. Book excerpt: Following the idea of considering three-body decays with final state B to DKpi in the pursuit of the notoriously elusive unitary angle gamma, the initial steps towards its measurement are presented. Using a sample of approximately 88 million BBbar pairs collected with the BaBar detector at the PEP-II collider, a measurement of the branching fractions BO to D+- KO pi-+ and BO to D*+- KO pi-+ are presented for the entire Dalitz region: Br(BO to D+- KO pi-+) = (4.97 +- 0.69 +- 0.55) x 10^(-4) Br(BO to D*+- KO pi-+) = (3.00 +- 0.66 +- 0.29) x 10^(-4). In both decay modes the dominant resonance is the K*+-(892) between the neutral kaon and the charged pion. Measuring the branching fractions of the corresponding resonant two-body decays yields: Br(BO to D+- K*-+) = (4.78 +- 0.58 +- 0.53) x 10^(-4) Br(BO to D*+- K*-+) = (3.22 +- 0.59 +- 0.29) x 10^(-4). Performing a time-dependent CP asymmetries fit of the resonant decay mode BO to D+- K*-+ yields: C = 0.93 +- 0.18 +- 0.03 ABS[lambda] = 0.19 +- 0.25 +- 0.04 S = 0.18 +- 0.28 +- 0.02 Delta S = 0.08 +- 0.28 +- 0.02. As the amplitude ratio ABS[lambda] is consistant with zero, no interference sensitive to gamma can be established at this point.

The analysis described was performed on ≈230 fb−1 of the BABAR data sample, recorded at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center and using the PEP-II electron storage rings. We measure CP asymmetries for decay to the KK and [pi][pi] final states, as well as for the branching ratio, and develop a new technique for tagging-efficiency correction using the Cabibbo-favored K[pi] final state. We find some evidence for CP violation in decays to the KK final state and results that suggest CP violation in the [pi][pi] final state as well.
