Book A Search for Adventure Leads to Alaska

Download or read book A Search for Adventure Leads to Alaska written by Wolf Hebel and published by Publication Consultants. This book was released on 2013-07-05 with total page 374 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: In spite of spending his early childhood in Berlin, Germany during WWII, Wolfgang had developed a love for animals and nature as well as for adventure. After the war, living with his parents and his younger siblings in Braunschweig, Germany, he finished school, became a journeyman glassblower, got married and settled down to, what would be for most people, a promising future. But his childhood dreams of adventure grew to a restless longing for distant lands, and soon he had talked his young wife into emigrating to Canada with him. A year later the couple was on their way to California, USA and heading toward a divorce. Being single again in California during the 60s had attractions for a young man in his 20s, but with a couple of like-minded friends Wolfgang soon was heading north again, all the way to Alaska. In Alaska new opportunities for the fulfillment of his childhood dreams pre- sented itself and were gladly taken advantage of. Today in advanced age, Wolf, as he is known nowadays, is still living on his own terms with his dog, Thorak, in a small village on the Yukon, and his philosophy is that everything happens for a reason!

Book The Sun Is a Compass

Download or read book The Sun Is a Compass written by Caroline Van Hemert and published by Little, Brown Spark. This book was released on 2019-03-19 with total page 286 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: For fans of Cheryl Strayed, the gripping story of a biologist's human-powered journey from the Pacific Northwest to the Arctic to rediscover her love of birds, nature, and adventure. During graduate school, as she conducted experiments on the peculiarly misshapen beaks of chickadees, ornithologist Caroline Van Hemert began to feel stifled in the isolated, sterile environment of the lab. Worried that she was losing her passion for the scientific research she once loved, she was compelled to experience wildness again, to be guided by the sounds of birds and to follow the trails of animals. In March of 2012, she and her husband set off on a 4,000-mile wilderness journey from the Pacific rainforest to the Alaskan Arctic, traveling by rowboat, ski, foot, raft, and canoe. Together, they survived harrowing dangers while also experiencing incredible moments of joy and grace -- migrating birds silhouetted against the moon, the steamy breath of caribou, and the bond that comes from sharing such experiences. A unique blend of science, adventure, and personal narrative, The Sun is a Compass explores the bounds of the physical body and the tenuousness of life in the company of the creatures who make their homes in the wildest places left in North America. Inspiring and beautifully written, this love letter to nature is a lyrical testament to the resilience of the human spirit. Winner of the 2019 Banff Mountain Book Competition: Adventure Travel

Book Alaskan Wilderness Adventure

Download or read book Alaskan Wilderness Adventure written by Duane Arthur Ose and published by Stratton Press. This book was released on 2019-07-29 with total page 138 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: At the Fairbanks International Airport's main terminal, we went to the ticket counter to pay for our plane trip. The young lady working asked us if we were going to Lake Minchumina for trophy fishing. She continued to tell us that a lot of people go there for the big fish. I made the mistake of telling her that we were going on a hike to the federal land settlement area to find land to stake a claim. Her mouth said nothing, but her eyes screamed "crazy person." I resisted the urge to try and explain further because it was obvious her mind was made up. I said no more and walked away with my dignity (somewhat) intact.

Book An Alaskan Adventure

Download or read book An Alaskan Adventure written by Frederick James Currier and published by Publication Consultants. This book was released on 2018-08-01 with total page 238 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: As the descendant of early miners, a grandfather who prospected for gold in the Fairbanks area in 1908 and a father who mined from the 1920s through the early 1940s, my interest and fascination with Frederick Currier's manuscript was easily spiked. Currier's quest for gold from 1893 into the 1900s was an admirable pursuit. His account of prospecting ventures in 1898 on the Chena River near Fairbanks is spellbinding, especially in his use of a sternwheeler and his building of cabins as he prospected toward the headwaters. I have great admiration for the early gold prospectors like Frederick Currier since I have sunk a couple of shafts to bedrock with a windlass and know the effort and determination required. The power of a few nuggets can change a person's direction in life. Currier's, An Alaskan Adventure, is well worth reading—more than once.

Book A Quest for Adventure

Download or read book A Quest for Adventure written by Jzonay Reitz and published by Balboa Press. This book was released on 2019-01-25 with total page 388 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: When twenty-year-old Bert Ray Libe read “Men wanted for Alaska to build a railroad—apply 526 Jackson Street” on a signboard in San Francisco one July morning in 1905, he immediately envisioned hunting adventures and gold-seeking opportunities in the rugged land of the north. The next morning his adventurous soul was infused with excitement as he boarded the SS Valencia bound for Seward, Alaska, accompanied by over four hundred other men, a woman dressed as a man, and a teenage boy. Bert was soon given the moniker, Fuzzy, by his shipmates because of his unruly hair. In a fascinating retelling of Bert’s adventures, Jzonay Reitz invites others to witness the breathtaking beauty of Alaska through Fuzzy’s eyes as he hunts in the pristine Kenai Mountains and traverses the Matanuska and Susitna Valleys of Southcentral Alaska, then ventures across snow-covered benches of Denali (Mt. McKinley) with four dogs and a sled and returns in the spring to search for gold in the glacial tributaries. Interspersed throughout his stories are an abundance of historical facts and revealing photographs. A Quest for Adventure is an inspiring and engaging memoir, brimming with energy and personality, and laced with humor even during challenging circumstances. KIRKUS REVIEW "A historically satisfying...memoir. Reitz intersperses occasional historical photographs and notes...particularly helpful in guiding the reader through her uncle's portrayals of Alaskan life, as in her detailed description of the lay of the land in the town of Seward in 1905...'Home Brew Alley'...'Millionaire's Row'..." ~Kirkus Indie - a review service from Kirkus Reviews

In the predawn hours of July 10, 2014, the twenty-seven-year-old son of preeminent Alaskan scientist and National Geographic Explorer Roman Dial, walked alone into Corcovado National Park, an untracked rainforest along Costa Rica’s remote Pacific Coast that shelters miners, poachers, and drug smugglers. He carried a light backpack and machete. Before he left, Cody Roman Dial emailed his father: “I am not sure how long it will take me, but I’m planning on doing 4 days in the jungle and a day to walk out. I’ll be bounded by a trail to the west and the coast everywhere else, so it should be difficult to get lost forever.” They were the last words Dial received from his son. As soon as he realized Cody Roman’s return date had passed, Dial set off for Costa Rica. As he trekked through the dense jungle, interviewing locals and searching for clues—the authorities suspected murder—the desperate father was forced to confront the deepest questions about himself and his own role in the events. Roman had raised his son to be fearless, to be at home in earth’s wildest places, travelling together through rugged Alaska to remote Borneo and Bhutan. Was he responsible for his son’s fate? Or, as he hoped, was Cody Roman safe and using his wilderness skills on a solo adventure from which he would emerge at any moment? Book It Happened Like This

Download or read book It Happened Like This written by Adrienne Lindholm and published by Mountaineers Books. This book was released on 2018-07-31 with total page 208 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: “In the wild, something inside me opens to innovation, inspiration, creativity, and imagination. It’s a good feeling, one that leaves me light and full of energy, free to imagine who I want to be in this life. . . . Yet it’s slippery and ephemeral, and I can never seem to pack it out with me.” —Adrienne Lindholm It Happened Like This is, on the surface, a memoir about what it means to live and love in one of the wildest places on the planet. But the love described is not a simple one; it’s a gritty, sometimes devastating, often blood-pumping kind of feeling played out in the rugged Alaska wilderness. In an authentic and honest voice, writer Adrienne Lindholm recounts her move to Alaska as a young woman eager to begin her career in environmental and wildlife studies. She finds herself initially out of her depth among her peers, many of whom are also “Outsiders,” new to the state, but who seem more experienced, more confident. Eventually she finds her way, immersing herself in the rigors of wilderness adventures and building a community of outdoorsy friends to sustain her. Soon she falls in love with JT and gradually, at times painfully, they build a life together and decide to start a family amidst the wild. Adrienne celebrates the many ways in which Alaska, and her outdoor adventures there, inspired self-discovery, as well as revealing her difficult and intimate journey into motherhood. Her love story encompasses the outline of massive mountains on the horizon, viewed for the first time; a caribou moving through an alder forest; the effort to climb a glaciated peak; and the peace that settles when contemplating a quiet Arctic lake. At times, her love—for JT, but also for nature and life—also feels savage, like when she charges onto a glacier alone, or when she shoots, kills, and skins her first animal. With It Happened Like This, readers take an intimate, gently humorous, and occasionally adrenalin-spiked journey into adulthood, and into the depth and comfort of wilderness.

He and his wife Rena were the very last persons to file a claim under the Federal Homestead Act of 1862--for a piece of property Duane describes as "a giant, fertile garden bowl, cupped warmly in God's loving hands." His new book, Alaskan Wilderness Adventure II, is part biography, part adventure, recounting how he and his young friend Jeff Peterson established Duane's homestead in the center of Alaska. With humor and vivid imagery, Duane has chronicled the trials and tribulations of building trails, constructing a home, and turning this five-acre slice of heaven into a habitable piece of property--a homestead Duane and Rena call Ose Mountain.
