Book excerpt: Excerpt from Alden's Citizen's Manual: A Text-Book on Government, for Common Schools The publishers of the Science of Government in connoo tion with American Institutions, - a work designed for Co] leges and High Schools, - have received abundant assurances, from various parts of the country, that the general introduction of the study of the science of government into common schools would follow the appearance of a text-book adapted to the wants and circumstances of common school teachers. The author was thus led to consult a number of intelligent and experienced teachers. Having possessed himself -of their views, which met his full approbation, he prepared a work, and submitted it to an able and successful teacher, who care fully revised every part of it, and made many valuable sug gestions. The work was then wholly te-written, and is now given to the public with the hope that it will meet the appro bation of common school teachers, and aid them in doing a work which no other class of men can do that of preparing the masses for intelligently exercising their rights as citizens of the Republic. Book American Government

Download or read book American Government written by Roscoe Lewis Ashley and published by Forgotten Books. This book was released on 2015-07-07 with total page 420 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from American Government: A d104-Book for Secondary Schools It is the author's hope that this little book may be found useful in many classes as a manual from which a fairly definite idea of the character and work of our governments may be obtained, with suggestions and material for the further study of particular topics and the practical side of American government as it is to - day. In writing the book he has made use of much the same material as in simi lar chapters of his American Federal State, supplementing those authorities with many that have appeared within the last two years, especially in periodical literature. From that work he has borrowed freely, without the use of quotation marks, for several sections of the text and for references and questions given at the end of the chapters. Book Manual for the Normal and Industrial Training Courses in Kansas High Schools

This book was released on 2017-12-26 with total page 154 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: Excerpt from Manual for the Normal and Industrial Training Courses in Kansas High Schools: 1911-1912 TO quote from the report of the Educational Commission of 1908: It is a well-known fact that the majority of the teachers of Kansas go into the Work with little or no special preparation. A number, small, however, compared with the number Of teachers in the state, attend some of our normal schools or colleges; but practically all the rural schools are in charge of teachers who have made no preparation except such as the academic studies give them. This'is even more Of a detriment than ap pears at first thought, for the graded schools, in which the greater part of the normal and college-trained teachers are employed, are usually super intended by men of experience and special fitness for the work, while the rural teacher has no one to whom she can go for daily advice and help. Book Urban Stormwater Management in the United States

Download or read book Urban Stormwater Management in the United States written by National Research Council and published by National Academies Press. This book was released on 2009-03-17 with total page 611 pages. Available in PDF, EPUB and Kindle. Book excerpt: The rapid conversion of land to urban and suburban areas has profoundly altered how water flows during and following storm events, putting higher volumes of water and more pollutants into the nation's rivers, lakes, and estuaries. These changes have degraded water quality and habitat in virtually every urban stream system. The Clean Water Act regulatory framework for addressing sewage and industrial wastes is not well suited to the more difficult problem of stormwater discharges. This book calls for an entirely new permitting structure that would put authority and accountability for stormwater discharges at the municipal level. A number of additional actions, such as conserving natural areas, reducing hard surface cover (e.g., roads and parking lots), and retrofitting urban areas with features that hold and treat stormwater, are recommended.
